South Toledo Bend State Park Campground

    ALMOST PERFECT

This was my first time at this beautiful state park. I will definitely come back! 3 days was not long enough to do everything! Our camper site was #46. It had a very large well kept wooden deck with a picnic table. The camper pad was long and concrete. It was slightly uneven, we used 3 blocks to level it off..There was also a large sand pad if you preferred a tent. A firepit was also there. Many of the other sites also had decks, with the same things available. It had water and electricity, a dump station, and very clean shower/restrooms . Also available were primitive camping sites with amazing views. Oh, did I mention that our site had a very short walk to a dock overlooking the beautiful lake. This dock had room for four boats! There are beautiful biking, and hiking trails, both concrete and dirt. Several play areas for the kids! There was a beach and swimming area, a nature center,, and playgrounds. The camp hosts were amazing and very helpful. The park was super clean, family and pet friendly, and a great price at 28 dollars a night. Happy camping!!

South Campground — Chicot State Park

    Great State Park

Chicot State Park is wonderful and well maintained. We had a wonderful weekend stay, and the weather was perfect. Take the time to drive around to the East Landing in the evening before sunset. It has one of the prettiest views of Chicot Lake. Also drive down to the South Fishing Pier below the South Campground. It has a long pier that goes out into the lake. My son spent a lot of time at the splash pad. Be sure to visit the free La. State Arboretum onsite. It has a great visitor center with some fantastic exhibits and nice hiking trails.

Stayed in campsite#84. It has a nice deck with picnic table. BBQ grill and fire pit are on the other side of the RV spot. Even though it is in the front, it is actually quite secluded with woods all around. Nearest neighbor was at least 40-50 ft. Away. My son could easily walk or ride his bike to the splash pad. Both AT&T and Verizon had poor signal(1 bar each). Was able to connect to the free park Wi-Fi. It was slow, but I could send text messages and make the occasional phone call. Wasn't a big deal, because I came here to camp and get unplugged. We camped at Chicot State Park in a Travel Trailer.

    Hidden Treasure RV Resort

    Great location

This campground is located on the Cotile lake in Boyce, Louisiana. And it's only about 8 or 10 minutes from I-49, but well worth the time. There is a small boat launch/fishing area. A couple of the guests are long term, but it is very quiet here. No matter what site you are in, you will need to level your rv. We are in site #17 and it overlooks the lake. Owners are fantastic. Highly recommend.

    Shady Lake RV Park

Feels like a Trailer Park rather than a Campground

I was out looking for a place to camp. I drove around the park. Some RV’s had dug in their sewer hoses for a more permanent living arrangement. There were other clues that verified some were living here very long term. You could tell some sites were set up like the people had been living there longer than a year.

While the owner was very nice and friendly, I just would not feel comfortable camping around people who live there long term.

I have since found out that this happens around Military Bases frequently. The reason is because it makes more financial sense for Military Personnel to not stay in base housing. Permanent Base Housing sucks their housing allowance away quickly. However, purchasing an RV and getting into a campground enables them to keep more of that money in their pockets.

This campground is near Fort Polk. I was told by one of the Army People that works there, this is what is happening with all of the RV resorts/campgrounds in the area. I understand what’s happening better now.

However, camping in a campground around a majority of the people that live in a place long term is more like moving into an old neighborhood. It’s equivalent to going to camp in a residential trailer park. That’s not camping. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Lakeview Park

    PRETTY, BUT NOISY

Don't get me wrong, I am not antisocial, but when I go camping I really want the natural quiet of nature. It was pretty busy, with many people gathered and partying. Kids driving crazy on golf carts. Otherwise, the property is pretty. The sites are easily accessible (our camper is approximately 30 ft). The showers were not available d/t covid 19, but were there. Our site 12 was level and had full hookups. Pet friendly. Large trees. Store on site and snack shop near the beach. Very kid friendly.

Guide to Pitkin

The Pitkin area in central Louisiana sits at approximately 200 feet above sea level in a region characterized by pine forests and nearby water features including Toledo Bend Lake and smaller waterways. Camping options near Pitkin include RV parks catering to both short-term visitors and long-term residents, with many facilities providing amenities ranging from basic hookups to recreational options. Weather conditions remain mild through much of the year, though summer humidity can reach uncomfortable levels.

What to do

Fishing at Bundick Lake: Access fishing spots at Bundick Lake Retreat and RV Park, where visitors can enjoy lake views in a natural setting. "The spacious RV sites are surrounded by beautiful scenery, and the lake views are breathtaking," notes camper Abby F., who appreciated the lake access.

Casino entertainment: Stay at RV parks near casino facilities for gaming and entertainment options. "The Coushatta casino and all its amenities, so no need to travel far for fun and food for adults and kids," reports David M., who enjoyed the convenience of recreation options within walking distance.

Swimming facilities: Several parks offer swimming pools and water features as alternatives to natural waterways. At Gator Grounds RV Resort, visitors enjoy "the outdoor AND indoor water park," according to Josh B., making it suitable for all-season visits despite weather conditions.

Outdoor games: Look for parks with recreational facilities beyond standard amenities. "We loved the pool, game room, and mini golf course, which kept our family entertained for hours," reported a visitor to Bundick Lake Retreat and RV Park, highlighting the diverse activity options available.

What campers like

Year-round water amenities: Indoor water facilities provide recreation regardless of season. At Gator Grounds, one visitor noted, "It was a very cold weekend but indoor water fun was awesome, kept the kids occupied." Another mentioned, "The indoor pools and splash pads were open and heated."

Campsite privacy: While many rv sites near Pitkin, Louisiana feature close quarters, some offer more separation. At Hidden Treasure RV Resort, guests appreciate the natural setting: "Privately owned Campground in the heart of Louisiana. Slightly hilly with beautiful mature trees, some which have several bird feeders attached! Wildlife galore."

Cultural celebrations: Regional events add unique experiences to camping trips. One camper at Lakeview Park shared: "We've not been during the summer, but we loved our kids' Mardi Gras weekend here. Lots of cultural fun and activities for kids and family."

Clean facilities: Maintenance standards vary between parks, with cleanliness frequently mentioned in positive reviews. "The showers were extremely clean," noted one camper at Gator Grounds, while another praised the "spotlessly clean" conditions during off-season visits.

What you should know

Long-term residents: Many RV parks near Pitkin serve as semi-permanent residences, particularly for military personnel. A visitor to JD's RV Park observed, "Like most rv parks, there's long term residents here," reflecting a common situation throughout the region.

Seasonal considerations: Visitor experiences vary significantly between peak and off-peak periods. At Gator Grounds, a camper noted, "Although it's not our first visit here, it is our first during off season. It was quiet, roomy, and spotlessly clean!"

Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds may present challenges. At Pontchartrain Landing RV Resort, a visitor noted, "The road to the resort was pretty bad," though they mentioned it may have been improved since their visit.

Noise levels: Proximity to highways affects ambient noise at some locations. One camper at Arlington RV Park mentioned, "The rv park is right off the road, and you can hear cars going by easily from anywhere in the rv park," highlighting the importance of site selection for noise-sensitive campers.

Tips for camping with families

Holiday celebrations: Special events enhance family camping experiences. At Gator Grounds, a visitor reported, "It was mardi gras weekend so parade was unbelievable!!!" while another mentioned, "We are now a huge fan of their Halloween celebration. The camping spots really go all out in decorating for kids."

Recreational facilities: Parks with multiple activities keep children engaged. One family at Red Shoes RV Park & Chalets shared, "The pool is large" and noted the "lazy river and a swim up bar for adults, also slides" at the adjacent casino property.

Supervised activities: Check for staffed recreation areas when traveling with children. A Gator Grounds visitor cautioned about staffing inconsistencies: "We went to the pool/slide area after setting up camp the evening of July 2. The big slide was closed. A staff person said they were short handed."

Playground access: Look for parks with dedicated play areas for younger visitors. Lakeview Park offers "a fishing pond, a swimming pond with inflatables, playground, store, and a dance/concert barn with live music," providing multiple options for families with varied interests.

Tips from RVers

Hookup placement: Position of utilities affects setup requirements. At Lakeview Park, one RVer advised, "Be sure to bring extra sewer hose, the sewer is a far reach!"

Site leveling: Terrain variations may require additional equipment. A visitor to Hidden Treasure RV Resort noted, "Site 19 was quite unlevel, but nothing a few leveling blocks couldn't handle," indicating the need to come prepared.

Transportation options: When staying near tourist destinations, investigate shuttle services. An RV traveler at Pontchartrain Landing reported, "The resort offered day shuttles to NOLA for $6 each way- $12 round trip. Uber cost us $20 one time and $40 another due to time of day."

Site selection strategies: Choose sites based on specific preferences. At Gator Grounds, a camper recommended, "We stayed in site 76. I highly recommend staying in the 70's spots. Shade, flat level areas, with fire rings and tables."
