Carr Creek State Park Campground permits leashed pets throughout its camping areas with water and electric hookups for both tent and RV camping. All sites feature picnic tables and fire rings suitable for family camping with animals. The campground offers direct lake access for dogs that enjoy swimming, though pets must remain under control at all times near the water. Littcarr Campground and Buckhorn Dam Campground similarly welcome pets with their clean, well-maintained facilities. Bathrooms at the campgrounds are generally clean, though facilities at Carr Creek have occasionally been reported as needing better maintenance. Most campsites have ample space between sites, providing pets with adequate room to rest comfortably while remaining leashed.

The mountain terrain surrounding these pet-friendly campgrounds offers numerous hiking opportunities where dogs can accompany their owners. Trace Branch Campground provides water access points ideal for dogs that enjoy swimming, with many campsites positioned directly on the water. Cell service is limited or non-existent at most locations, particularly at Trace Branch, allowing for uninterrupted outdoor time with pets. Bathrooms and shower facilities vary in quality and cleanliness between locations, with Littcarr receiving positive reviews for its cleaner facilities. Campgrounds in this region typically enforce standard pet policies including leash requirements and waste cleanup responsibility. Weather in the mountains can change rapidly, so appropriate pet gear for varying conditions is advisable when visiting these eastern Kentucky campgrounds.

      Thompson RV Park

Friendly, next to a playground, near a rivers edge, quiet people.

Beautiful, quiet, friendly. Large grassy area, well maintained. Near a rivers edge, playground, walking track, dog park, soccer fields...all right on or beside grounds. Easy access, allows weekly, or monthly stays.

Lover's Leap Campground — Natural Tunnel State Park

      Come Back Again and Again

This was my third visit to the NTSP - I really enjoy the camping, and the pool and Natural Tunnel are great fun.  Each time I've camped in Lover's Leap, and all the sites are well spaced.  Have stayed in #3 and #5, and #12 which is even more private.  The restrooms and showers are always clean, and there is a nice laundry area as well.  This trip we took a car ride to Big Stone Gap, a thriving little town about 30 minutes north of the park - it's a nice quiet but interesting town, with a nice dog park.  Took a car ride to Gate City, south of the park - wouldn't recommend it.  It's a city on it's way down.  The short ride to the Blockhouse in the park is interesting, with nice views of the mountains.  The ride and hike up and down to the tunnel is always fun.  In the summers they light the tunnel one Saturday night each month, so it's worth trying to plan for that.

      Pine Mountain State Resort Park

      Scenic Cabins, Beautiful Hikes

We stayed in the cabins and they are well-maintained and stocked. Pretty rustic, but the fireplaces are worth it and make it extra cozy. They are also pet-friendly! Our dog loves the outdoors, so it’s always a bonus when we can take her with us. We have been back multiple times. Great hiking, we recommend the trail that leads to where 3 states meet. It’s a fairly easy hike and ends with a great view. We have been multiple times, and each season has it's different appeal of beauty!

Beautiful little campground right along the river.

Mostly level gravel spots. Sites are close together. Block bathhouse that the spiders enjoy. Beautiful river. Lots of open space pets. This is very country setting. Friendly host.

Whittleton Campground — Natural Bridge State Resort Park

      Camping during the Rugged Red!

I was extremely thankful to get a last minute tent site during my trip to run the Rugged Red. Locationwise, it's perfect and right at the start of the race. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait to go back!! I love the creek that runs through the campground (we were in the Whittleton loop)...and the trail that starts in the back of the campground. It poured all night while we were there, but we stayed dry...our site didn't flood or anything.

I only have two complaints. The website said free wi-fi, but evidently that's only on the other larger loop. It was misleading. Also, this trail is one of the only ones in the area where dogs are allowed. That's a huge issue for me, since I always camp and hike with my sidekick. That's a state park issue, not an isolated campground issue. It's pet friendly!!

    Guide to Hazard

Carr Creek Lake area contains several interconnected campgrounds situated at approximately 1,055 feet elevation in the Cumberland Plateau region. The mountainous terrain features mixed hardwood forests with significant elevation changes between campsites and water access points. Winter temperatures regularly drop below freezing, with summer highs averaging 85°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms from June through August.

    What to do

Hiking access: Kingdom Come State Park Campground offers multiple interconnected trails with varying difficulty levels. "The surrounding mountains provide many short hikes that can be easily strung together to make for a longer trek if desired," notes Sarah. The park features unique geological formations including "a natural rock bridge close to the campsites called Log Rock."

Fishing opportunities: Buckhorn Dam Campground provides excellent access to stocked waters. "You could also go up back the park and fish right at the spillway from Buckhorn Lake Dam. Really fun experience," shares Marissa G. The fishing areas include both lake and flowing water options with varying depths.

Water activities: Trace Branch - Buckhorn Lake offers direct water access from many sites. "This campground is a hidden gem. It's in the hills, far off the beaten path, and half of the campsites are right on the water," reports Damon O. The campground includes boat ramp facilities and swimming areas suitable for different skill levels.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Littcarr Campground receives positive reviews for maintenance. "Awesome, clean and plenty of space between camp sites. Bathrooms and showers kept clean and laundry was great," states Randy M. The campground provides defined campsites with adequate spacing for privacy.

Family atmosphere: Buckhorn Dam Campground features amenities specifically designed for children. According to Marissa G., it has "Hands down the best playground for kids we have seen in a campground." The recreational areas include horseshoe pits in multiple locations throughout the campground.

Private sites: Kingdom Come State Park Campground offers well-separated tent sites. "There are 6 tent sites (7 if they allow you to reserve the one next to the duck pond), each with a gravel drive, mulch tent pad big enough for two smallish tents, fire ring, and picnic table," explains Sarah, who appreciated the layout and preparation of each site.

    What you should know

Road access challenges: Some campgrounds have difficult approach roads. For Trace Branch, "DO NOT TAKE 'PLEASANT VALLEY RD' into the campgrounds! That road takes you on a single lane road and if you meet another vehicle, someone will have to backup," warns j B. Similar access issues affect other area campgrounds during wet weather.

Cell service limitations: Mobile reception varies significantly across the region. At Trace Branch - Buckhorn Lake, "There is no cell service here, so be prepared to unplug and unwind," reports Damon O. Some campgrounds offer spotty service while others require driving to higher elevations for connectivity.

Weather preparedness: Rapid temperature changes occur throughout the year. At Kingdom Come State Park, seasonal considerations include wind exposure and humidity. Brian B. notes campers should "Take the time to check it out you won't regret it," but prepare for changing conditions with appropriate gear.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground options: Carr Creek State Park Campground provides limited play equipment. "Playground equipment was taken down, only had a couple of swings," reports Gisela C. Other campgrounds in the area offer more robust playground facilities with newer equipment.

Beach access: Carr Creek State Park Campground includes swimming areas with clear water. "Beach is about 100 yds long. Water was clean and clear. It might be a slight challenge walking back up the steps to the parking lot if you're not in good shape," explains Gisela C., highlighting accessibility considerations for families with young children.

Wildlife awareness: Kingdom Come State Park Campground requires proper food storage. "The campground has 7 sites each with its own picnic table, fire ring, and pole for stashing your food away from bears," notes Brian B. Bear activity varies seasonally, with more frequent sightings in spring and fall.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup reliability: At Carr Creek State Park Campground, electrical connections may require inspection. "Our electric didn't work (site 33) but we were with another couple and plugged into theirs next to us," shares Gisela C. RVers should check connections upon arrival and report issues to park staff.

Site selection: Littcarr Campground offers varied sites for different RV sizes. "We stay here several times a year. Very clean facilities, friendly hosts, and a wonderful location on the lake. Site #25 is our favorite, though it could be more level, but the privacy, size, and shade are perfect for us," recommends Tiffany T., highlighting the importance of choosing sites based on specific RV requirements.

Access limitations: For larger RVs, Trace Branch presents challenges due to road conditions. "Access to the camp may be tough for larger rigs as there's a few miles of windy, one-lane roads with switchbacks, drop-offs, and the occasional washout," warns Damon O. RVers with vehicles over 30 feet should contact campgrounds directly to confirm accessibility.
