Beautiful place - big rig friendly

So glad we chose this dispersed camping location as an overnight stay. It's fantastic! Beautiful area, campfire rings in several locations, and our 43' Rv navigated smoothly (well, husband navigated smoothly!) Easy to drive through, well-maintained roads....leave no trace, and enjoy!

      Osage State Fishing Lake

      Very pretty, mostly peaceful

We found a great spot for our van that was right on the water and mostly secluded. Got pretty busy on the weekend and people had loose dogs that were causing some problems, but otherwise very chill. Lake is beautiful, decent cell service with Verizon. Pit toilets in good shape when we arrived Thursday afternoon but kind of rough by the end of the weekend.

Camp in main area to be near toilets, otherwise there’s lots of loops near the water where you can find sites with more privacy. No trash so pack it out.

      Osage State Fishing Lake

      Decent

This area had several spots around the lake. I had enough signal to make and receive calls and texts but being able to surf the internet was challenging almost impossible. I have Spectrum. The spots aren’t that private but I felt relatively safe. Clean. Gas station about 10 mins away. The area isn’t very remote. There are a couple pit toilets around.

      Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake

      Quiet spot

This is a small remote lake of about 160 acres water area. A county road takes you through the area and across the dam. There are gravel pull off areas and a lakeside gravel road. The pit toilet is not well maintained. Not suitable for larger vehicles.

Perfect as an overnight on a motorcycle road trip

Soft level grass to camp on. Pit toilets. Some traffic visiting the fishing spot, but it quiets down at night. Not too far from i-70.

      Great stop for the night

Pulled in late and left early. Lots of level grassy space available, and the lake looked really nice. A few other overnighters were there. Not too much time is added if you’re traveling i70. Poop on the toilet seat in the pit toilet so we waited until we got to a gas station in the morning. People are animals.

      Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake

7-day limit. No trash cans or water, but it's free.

There's sun by the bathrooms, and there's shade in the forested campground. Everything is as great as it can be, aside from missing trash cans, and ideally water and grey dump, but that's usually rare to find water and a grey dump at a free site.

I'm starting to think that Kansas has a 7-day limit instead of a 14 because this is the second time that a Kansas park official came to the door and said we need to leave. So I'm going to treat all Kansas places as a 7-day limit.

    Guide to Scranton

Dispersed camping near Scranton, Kansas centers around state fishing lakes that offer primitive, lakeside sites suitable for tent campers and smaller recreational vehicles. Kansas public lands maintain specific regulations limiting camping stays to 7 days, with most campsites providing minimal amenities. The topography features rolling prairie surrounding small lakes, with camping areas typically situated on shorelines or in wooded sections that provide natural shade during summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 90°F.

    What to do

Sunrise fishing sessions: Early morning anglers can enjoy peaceful conditions at Osage State Fishing Lake where campers report "beautiful and peaceful" conditions. The lake supports several fish species and offers bank access from multiple camping areas.

Wildlife observation: Many campers bring binoculars for birdwatching opportunities, especially in morning hours. "Woke up to a beautiful sunrise," notes one Osage Lake visitor, highlighting the natural scenery that makes this area popular for nature photography.

Evening campfires: Sites typically include fire rings or designated fire areas where permitted. "Firepit. Some trash from other campers... remember to pack it in and pack it out!" reminds one visitor to Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake, emphasizing the importance of proper waste management.

    What campers like

Lakefront positioning: Sites near the water receive consistently positive feedback. "This site was easy to find and had a beautiful view of the lake!" reports a Leavenworth Lake visitor, while many campers specifically seek waterfront locations for direct fishing access.

Relative privacy: Despite being public areas, the dispersed nature of these camping areas allows for space between sites. "We found a great spot for our van that was right on the water and mostly secluded," writes one camper about their experience at Osage State Fishing Lake, though they note weekends bring increased traffic.

Natural quiet: The remote locations provide peaceful environments, particularly on weekdays. "I only stayed here a night but wish I could've stayed longer. Highly recommend for a peaceful camping trip," shares an Osage Lake visitor, reflecting the tranquil atmosphere campers consistently mention.

    What you should know

Limited facilities: Prepare for truly primitive camping conditions. "No trash cans or water, but it's free," explains one camper at Leavenworth Lake. Pit toilets represent the only permanent facilities at most locations, with varying maintenance levels.

Weekend congestion: Weekday camping provides significantly more solitude than weekends. "Got pretty busy on the weekend and people had loose dogs that were causing some problems," reports an Osage State Fishing Lake visitor, suggesting midweek visits for those seeking maximum quiet.

Access considerations: Road conditions impact site accessibility, particularly after rain. "A county road takes you through the area and across the dam. There are gravel pull off areas and a lakeside gravel road," describes a Leavenworth Lake visitor, noting smaller vehicles navigate the area more easily.

    Tips for camping with families

Bathroom planning: Facilities are basic and widely spaced. "Camp in main area to be near toilets, otherwise there's lots of loops near the water where you can find sites with more privacy," advises an Osage Lake camper, highlighting the tradeoff between convenience and seclusion.

Early morning fishing: Many visitors arrive pre-dawn for fishing. "Many slept in their cars and left at first light. I assume they went fishing at the lake," notes a visitor to Leavenworth Kansas State Fishing Lake, which may affect light sleepers.

Weather preparedness: Limited tree cover at some sites means exposure to elements. "There's sun by the bathrooms, and there's shade in the forested campground," explains a Leavenworth Lake camper, suggesting families bring shelter options for sunny summer days.

    Tips from RVers

Size restrictions: Larger vehicles face challenges at certain locations. "Not suitable for larger vehicles," cautions a Leavenworth Lake visitor, while Osage Lake receives more positive feedback regarding access.

Road navigation: Gravel roads require careful driving but remain navigable for appropriate vehicles. "Our 43' RV navigated smoothly (well, husband navigated smoothly!) Easy to drive through, well-maintained roads," reports an Osage State Fishing Lake visitor, confirming accessibility for experienced drivers.

Self-sufficiency requirements: RVers must bring all necessary supplies. "Everything is as great as it can be, aside from missing trash cans, and ideally water and grey dump," notes a Leavenworth Lake visitor, emphasizing the need for complete self-containment.
