    High Plains Camping

    Easy access, kind, and clean.

I stopped for just one night on my way to Colorado in a baby 13 foot travel trailer and they were kind enough to put me back in the corner so I could watch the beautiful Kansas Sunset, and away from the big rigs. Big clean, hot and free showers with good water pressure.

Kansas Country Inn & RV Park

Great overnight spot. Priced right for the location

Great people and very friendly town. Campsite is very bland and bare. Wind blows constantly but nice area for dogs to run and right next to motel with all the extra amenities.

    Atwood Lions Club Park

    Clean, quiet location

We were passing through northern Kansas on 36 Hwy on the way back from a Colorado motorcycle trip and needed an overnight stay for tent camping. We arrived after dark and called the number on the sign. The friendly attendant told us we could tent camp for free anywhere in the grassy areas by the lake. The campground was quiet and clean. I would highly recommend this location.

    Oberlin-Sappa State Park

    Can't beat free.

I should have paid more attention to this park. I didn't realize there was a frisbee golf course. Plenty of hiking, biking and horse riding trails. I read later there's pond there to fish in. The place is called a state park but it's actually run by the city of Oberlin, Kansas. We were just driving through and needed a place to stay and found this little gem. We were the only ones in the park. It's free if you aren't using electricity. Otherwise there is an honor box for those using RV electric hook ups. We are van living and didn't need any hook ups. Lots of trees for shade around. There's a shelter house. Wish I took some pics. It was a pretty little spot.

    Oberlin-Sappa State Park

    Odd free campground

This state park/campground is definitely.. unique. Following GPS directions to this camping area led us into the park and to a locked gate. Drive beyond the gate and there's an open field to the left with one official 'campsite'. Continue to drive past, following the road around for about 1-2 minutes, and you arrive to the "campground" / "Frisbee golf course", where there's 10 spots, I believe, and a donation based toilet.

There was someone set up at the single site in the open field, but the campground was empty. There were hookups that didn't look like they functioned. Since there were blue signs with "camping" written on them, and arrows pointing to the open field, we pulled our van along the back behind some trees, where there was a cute spot with a picnic table, and access to "Lake Bottom Trail" which really looked like a mowed path around a hunting ground. There was also another trail or two in the area, but we did not explore them.

The air was filled with tiny black flies (though harmless) but dozens and dozens got caught in my arm, head, and leg hairs, and it was quite frustrating, but again they were quite small and harmless, but that was my main issue with the location.

Locals drove by a few times, as it seemed farmland and some houses are accessed through the park. The town of Oberlin has very limited food/supplies.

Prairie Dog Campground — Prairie Dog State Park

    Ok, not too exciting

Super flat landscape, very short walking trail, main attraction is fishing, less wildlife than I expected. Quite a few campsites to choose from, some with more trees than others. We chose a primitive one. Also some new modern cabins. Ok place to stop over, I wouldn’t return but others seemed happy with it. And yes, you will definitely see prairie dogs :)

Shady Rest Campground — Prairie Dog State Park

Unlike the other reviews, I think this place is great

I've been here twice now. Once in July and now at the very end of Oct. Better in Oct. No ticks or bugs and frankly of all the camping locations, there is a number of different choices, I had my section to myself. This place has swimming, a small hike, your choice of camping location, a frisbee golf course and miles one could hike or bike. I think it is kind of a jewel in the Kansas system.

    Whistle Stop RV and Antiques

It was mediocre at best… 1 night stays recommended

This was our first stop after hitting the road to start full time RVing, and we definitely needed to stop and recollect ourselves, but this is definitely a one night stop aorta place… nothing really near by but right off the highway and has all the full amenities one needs to recharge and prep for their next stop. Walmart is directly across the street within walking distance.

Just be aware of where you’re walking. I ended up with a metal staple in my foot and our pups picked up stickers in the grass

What to do

Fishing at Norton Reservoir: Prairie Dog State Park provides access to Norton Reservoir where anglers can catch various fish species. According to a visitor at Prairie Dog Campground, "A lake full of fish and fowl. Turkeys and whitetail deer and the coyotes call in the distance. A photographer could get lost in the pure wilderness available in the prairie."

Wildlife viewing: The region hosts diverse prairie wildlife. A camper at Sheridan State Fishing Lake reported, "I got to see 2 great blue herons and listen to 2 great horned owls call to each other at night - how awesome!" This free camping location provides excellent opportunities to observe native Kansas wildlife.

Frisbee golf: Several campgrounds offer disc golf courses. One visitor to Oberlin-Sappa State Park noted, "There was a frisbee golf course, plenty of hiking, biking and horse riding trails. I read later there's pond there to fish in." The course provides a recreational option for campers seeking activities beyond typical outdoor pursuits.

What campers like

Quiet, affordable sites: Many campgrounds offer peaceful settings at reasonable rates. At Atwood Lions Club Park, a tent camper reported, "We arrived after dark and called the number on the sign. The friendly attendant told us we could tent camp for free anywhere in the grassy areas by the lake. The campground was quiet and clean."

Lake views: Several campgrounds feature scenic water access. A visitor to Prairie Dog State Park's Cedar Ridge Campground mentioned, "Excellent for large RV's. Pull thru sites with full hookups and overlooking Norton reservoir." These water-adjacent sites provide both scenic views and recreational opportunities.

On-site dining options: Some locations offer food service, eliminating the need to cook. A camper at High Plains Camping shared, "They have a cafe 'Grub n Chug'. Great pizza and beer at a reasonable price." Another visitor noted, "Ordered food from Cap'n Jack's Pub which was delivered to our RV. Food was good pub food!"

What you should know

Weather considerations: The Kansas plains experience extreme weather patterns. According to a camper at Prairie Dog Campground, "I've visited here during every season. The heat and bugs of mid July to the frozen autumn morings, always beautiful and teaming with wildlife." Plan accordingly with proper shelter and clothing for temperature swings.

Seasonal bugs: Insects can be problematic during warmer months. One camper at Shady Rest Campground warned, "We were literally stuck in our camper and only spent the night and than left. When I did have to go out to take my dogs out to the bathroom, the bugs would fly up my nose and were all over me."

Bathroom maintenance varies: Facility cleanliness differs between campgrounds. At Shady Rest Campground, a visitor noted, "Bathrooms need work or at least someone that cleans them at least daily. The park is nice but the bathrooms are embarrassing 26 dollars a night." Others reported clean facilities at different locations.

Tips for camping with families

Pet safety awareness: When bringing pets to campgrounds near Rexford, watch for hazardous plants. At Kansas Country Inn & RV Park, a camper cautioned, "Watch for the thorny burrs that get all over shoes especially if you have a dog…. Would be very painful for them."

Swimming opportunities: Several parks offer swimming areas for families. A visitor to Prairie Dog Campground simply stated, "Shaded RV spots with hookups. Good swimming." This provides a welcome recreational option during hot Kansas summers.

Playgrounds available: Some campgrounds include play areas. A camper at Oberlin-Sappa State Park mentioned, "Beautiful, well maintained grounds... Frisbee golf, playground, lots of open space." These amenities help keep children entertained during camping stays.

Tips from RVers

Level sites: Most RV sites in the region offer level parking. At Whistle Stop RV and Antiques, a visitor noted, "Very clean restrooms and showers. Very nice to work with while traveling late at night. We will definitely stop again on our way to Colorado next time!" The convenient highway-adjacent location makes this spot popular for overnight stays.

Full hookup availability: Several campgrounds provide complete utility connections. A traveler at High Plains Camping reported, "The camp sites in section 300/400 are spacious with full utilities." These designated areas offer the most comprehensive services for RVers requiring water, electric, and sewer connections.

Wind protection: Seek sheltered sites when possible due to strong Kansas winds. One camper at High Plains Camping observed, "It's super breezy here in the high plains and they've got some trees to help cut it down but it's the high plains!" Positioning RVs strategically can minimize wind exposure and noise.
