What campers like
Clear water quality: Wilson Lake's clarity stands out to visitors at Lucas - Wilson Reservoir. "The lake is extremely clean. You can park with a water view nearly everywhere," writes Maura D. The water quality makes it particularly appealing for swimming and fishing.
Secluded camping spots: Some areas offer more privacy and seclusion. "You follow a long road down to this secluded campground by the water. There are 84 sites some that are electric and some electric and water," reports Shannon G.
Spacious camping areas: Sites at Minooka Park provide ample room between campers. "Second, the sites are really beautiful and big with great views. We were right on the lake and it was stunning for sunrise," writes Randall K.
What you should know
Wind conditions: Wind can be challenging for tent campers at certain locations. "WINDY, WINDY, WINDY!!!!! This campsite is NOT for tents! We arrived hoping to cook and hang out on the lake but the 18mph winds had us huddled near the car as a wind shield," warns Elizabeth M.
Bathroom facilities vary: The quality of restrooms differs between campgrounds. "There are clean vault toilets and clean shower facilities with perfect water temp and pressure," reports Randall K. about Minooka Park, while others note inconsistent shower temperatures.
Free weekday camping: COE Wilson Lake Sylvan Park offers cost-saving opportunities. "If you choose not to use the electric sites, there are primitive sites, which are free," notes Fran S., while another camper mentions that Minooka Park offers free non-electric standard sites Monday through Thursday.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple playgrounds are available for children. "There is a playground central to the park and several areas which you can launch smaller vessels such as canoes or kayaks and a larger boat ramp," Crystal C. points out.
Swimming beaches: Designated areas make swimming safer for families. "There was a swimming beach just a few steps away from our tent spot which was why we chose it," explains Curren C., though note that some beaches may be temporarily unavailable during high water levels.
Kid-friendly fishing: Special fishing areas are designed for young anglers. "There is a swimming beach and a small fishing hole for kids," Shannon G. mentions about Wheatgrass Hell Creek Area Campground.
Tips from RVers
Pull-through sites with views: Many sites accommodate larger vehicles with premium views. "The outside loop sites are pull through with beautiful lake views. The inner loop is back in sites with a view of the lake but nothing like the outside one," advises Shannon G.
Hookup options: Electric and water connections are available at most campgrounds. "If you are in an RV you could enjoy the view from the protection of the RV," suggests Elizabeth M., noting the advantage during windy conditions.
Easy interstate access: Wilson Lake provides a convenient stopover for travelers. "If you are traveling I 70, this is a great spot for a night to break up the drive. Only a few miles off of the highway, clean, quiet, with water and electricity," shares John S.
