    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Lansing area RV parks offer several developed camping options for motorhome travelers. Walnut Grove RV Park in Merriam provides 50 gravel sites with both 30 and 50-amp electric hookups, water, and sewer connections. The sites accommodate big rigs but are closely spaced. "The spaces are very tight in the travelers section and more spread out in the long term section," noted one reviewer who stayed multiple months at the park. Basswood Country RV Resort near Platte City features spacious RV sites with 50-amp service, full hookups, and year-round access. Tranquility RV Park has 25 sites with full hookups including 30 and 50-amp electric connections. Most sites are pull-through, making them suitable for larger motorhomes and fifth wheels.

Throughout the region, RV parks typically charge between $40-75 per night, with premium pull-through sites commanding higher rates. Several campgrounds operate year-round, while others like Worlds of Fun Village only welcome guests seasonally (March through October). Most parks are equipped with sanitary dump stations, shower facilities, and trash removal services. Cell service varies by location, with some parks offering WiFi as an alternative connectivity option. Pet-friendly policies are common across most RV parks, though specific restrictions may apply. For RV travelers requiring propane, it's advisable to fill tanks before arriving as on-site propane service is limited in the area. One traveler mentioned that parking pads at Walnut Grove "were on a slight hill but weren't terrible to level out."

      Lake Shawnee County Campground

      Perfect little county campground

Beautiful gated lakeside campground in SE Topeka that can accommodate almost any camper type. There are pull through and back in sites. All are gravel with a picnic table and fire ring. The sites are fairly level and easy to navigate. There is a playground, picnic pavilion, swim beach, laundry, fishing dock and 2 clean bathhouses. The sites are close together, but most will have a view of the lake. There are 50 and 30 amp hook ups and water hook ups. No sewer, but there is a dump station on-site. Rental bikes are near the office to ride around the trail that goes 7 miles around the lake. The whole lake area has a lot going on: softball and baseball fields, multiple playgrounds, disc golf, golf course, tennis courts, paddle boat/canoe rentals, amazing gardens, etc. Several restaurants including fast food, pizza, donut shop, Chinese, 2 bar and grills, and Mexican food are very nearby. There is also a Dollar General, urgent care clinic, liquor store and 2 gas stations. It’s a great location just a few miles south of 1-70. Normally sites are $20/night, $18/night for seniors. Highly recommend!

      Walnut Grove RV Park

Close to downtown Merriam and KC

My husbands job took us to Merriam Kansas and we needed a place to stay, we made reservations at Walnut Grove. We were surprised to find it in the middle of a neighborhood. The staff were very nice and helped us into our site. The sites were on gravel and very close to each other. Walnut Grove was both short and long term campers. There were no tent sites. We had full hook-ups, cell service, and free wifi. We had a picnic table and fire ring and could purchase firewood at their store.

During our stay I was awakened to a startling noise and couldn't figure it out until I went outside and saw the walnuts falling onto our camper. By the time we left, everything was covered(stained) tarnish brown. The park is in a walnut grove hence its name. They had a dog run which was not fenced but provided some grass for the pups. They had a laundry mat and clean showers with good water pressure. There also was a strange noise coming from the trees and when I asked the office what it was they thought it was locusts. I knew that was not their noise so I had to find what it was. After searching, I found that it was tree frogs 🐸 and it was their call. So if you are there in September listen and you will hear them, they love the walnut trees.

Sunflower Campground — Hillsdale State Park

      Very Clean and Very Relaxing

The Park: We love this park, it’s massive, and really pretty. They have so much to do (listed below). Sunflower Loop is our favorite and has full hookups. There are more primitive loops as well. It is ADA accessible. There was not a tornado shelter as of 2018. This is one thing that should be mandatory given its proximity and being further away from potential shelter. Excellent camping on the lake. Lots of water activities available.

Sites: level, clear, easily accessible. Sunflower loop is widely spaced and plenty of room for larger RVs.

      Cellular: decent cellular signal.

      Weston Bend State Park Campground

Quiet campground close to many Kansas City attractions

Campground is hilly, sites are level, gravel pads. Lots of space between sites. Electric sites, no water, but water spigots were scattered around the campground. Majority of sites had shade. Most sites are back in, there are 2 pull through sites and 2 family sites. Firewood is available for sale on the honor system near the camp host. Nice shower facilities and laundry available (one washer, one dryer). Regular trash dumpster and also recycling. Pit toilets also available. Dump station across from dumpsters and recycling. Entrance gate closes at 9 pm.

      Peculiar Park Place

      Shakedown with old friends

This is the campground to be at if you are looking for a staging area just south of the KC area with full hookups, level sites and amazing owners.

Recently downsized our rig and selected this location for the initial shakedown. Had an easy to access pull through site that had 50/30 amp access, water and sewer. Nice landscaping, plenty of place to walk.

Accepts cask or check for payments, propane sold on site. Short drive from Flying J and grocery store

      Peculiar Park Place

      Great place!

We enjoyed it here, but it snowed so we didn’t explore the trails while we were there. Our internet worked great through Verizon and ATT, we never tried the park WiFi. Clean laundry facilities, pull through site was a little tight, but worked well. If we’re in the KC area again, we’ll definitely stay there. Only drawback, the target audience is a bit older so no playground or park for kids, but plenty of open grassy areas worked too. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. They do propane refill, which was awesome.

      Lake Shawnee County Campground

Even without full hookups the quiet well kept campground is worth it.

The Beauty and peaceful campground suits my wife and I. The showers and laundry areas are clean and well kept. The staff is very nice to talk to. The big draw back is no sewer hookup. There is a dump station close to the entrance that is free for campers staying here. The other draw back is during winter the water is shut off. Again there is water at the dump station. This said the staff showed me plans that have been approved to add pull through sites, full hookups, and cabins. We really enjoy the beautiful sunrises and sunsets and all the geese on the lake.

    Guide to Lansing

Camping options near Lansing, Kansas provide convenient access to both rural outdoor settings and Kansas City metro attractions. The area sits at approximately 900 feet above sea level in the rolling hills region of northeast Kansas. Most campgrounds remain open year-round with moderate seasonal temperature ranges, though summer humidity levels typically reach 70-80% during peak camping months.

    What to do

Fishing access: multiple stocked lakes at Basswood Country RV Resort offer no-license-required fishing. "You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish," reports Shannon G. The resort features five small lakes with consistent catches.

Family activity centers: Organized weekend events keep younger campers entertained. "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie," notes Tori G. about Basswood Resort's programming schedule.

Historical exploration: Visit President Truman's favorite fishing cabin at Basswood Resort. "As a point of interest, this used to be a favorite fishing spot of President Harry S. Truman, check out the Mother in Law cabin—built at his request," recommends Sara E. The historical site offers an educational element to camping trips.

    What campers like

Convenient airport proximity: Worlds of Fun Village offers camping with downtown Kansas City views. "Easy walk to Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, with some back-in sites offering tremendous views of downtown KC," reports Scott C., who appreciated the location.

Family-friendly amenities: Deer Creek Valley RV Park maintains clean facilities with recreational options. "Huge grassy enclosed dog run which is priceless traveling across country with two dogs," notes Julie F. Joseph F. adds it has a "fun little pool and awesome play area for kids."

Level concrete pads: Concrete parking sites at multiple campgrounds simplify setup. "The spot was 55 with a 5.50 Good Sam discount... The roads and parking spots are all concrete with grass and picnic tables," reports Clyde C. about Deer Creek Valley. Level sites mean less time spent on stabilizing rigs and more time enjoying the stay.

    What you should know

Train noise considerations: Campus RV Park sits near active rail lines. "Only issue was trains blowing their horns during the night," notes Carolyn M. Other reviewers mention the area's train schedules vary, with some parks having more frequent passes than others.

Seasonal operation schedules: Several campgrounds close during winter months. Parks like Worlds of Fun Village operate from March through October, while others maintain year-round accessibility with full hookups.

Varying site privacy: Space between sites differs significantly between campgrounds. "The spaces are very tight in the travelers section and more spread out in the long term section," notes one reviewer about site spacing at certain parks. At premium sites, more room allows for outdoor living space.

    Tips for camping with families

Amusement park packages: Lake Paradise Resort offers pool access with camping fees. "Included in your camp fee you get 2 free daily passes per night of camping to the pool and a discounted rate for any other swimmers," explains Julie B. For a family of four, this means parents can use free passes while children cost just $3 each.

Zero-entry pool access: Kid-friendly water features make summer camping more enjoyable. "The pool is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler," shares Julie B. about Lake Paradise Resort.

Playground availability: Several campgrounds feature play structures for children. "Kids loved playing on the playground in the morning while we packed up," reports Delci L. about Deer Creek Valley RV Park, noting the convenience while adults handle departure tasks.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: At Walnut Grove RV Park near Lansing, Kansas, choose premium pull-through sites for more space. "I would recommend staying at the premium pull through sites the other back-in sites are rather small," advises Bob M. These premium sites typically cost $10-15 more per night but provide significantly more room.

RV size accommodation: Big rigs require careful site selection. "We made a last minute decision and decided to stay somewhere near KC after a long cross country trip... When we arrived, the staff flagged us in and showed us to our site," reports Jayme J., appreciating the guidance for first-time RV travelers.

Seasonal maintenance considerations: Fall camping at walnut tree-shaded rv sites near Lansing brings unique challenges. "During our stay I was awakened to a startling noise and couldn't figure it out until I went outside and saw the walnuts falling onto our camper. By the time we left, everything was covered (stained) tarnish brown," shares Shannon G. about seasonal impacts at Walnut Grove RV Park.
