Best Campgrounds near Dodge City, KS

Several campgrounds sit within easy reach of Dodge City. Gunsmoke RV Park lies four miles from downtown and has good-sized sites for RVs and a reputation for helpful staff. Campers looking for more outdoor activities might prefer Meade State Park Campground, which has trails for hiking and biking nearby. Summer weekends get busy at both places, so booking ahead makes sense. Pay attention to the fire rules and how long you can stay at each spot. The facilities at both campgrounds stay pretty clean, though the water pressure sometimes drops at peak times. While in the area, many campers take time to check out Dodge City's historical sites. Horse Thief Reservoir gives fishing opportunities not far from the camping areas. Kansas weather changes quickly here, so bringing layers and rain gear is smart regardless of the forecast. Both tent and RV campers can find suitable spots in the area. Most campgrounds have their own websites or reservation systems where you can find current rules and check if spots are available.

    Horse Thief Reservoir

Beautiful lake to fish, swim, and ski

It doesn’t have much if any shade, so bring your own. Otherwise it is a great place to stay, especially if you have a boat.

    Ford State Fishing Lake

    Established spots, albeit sloped

    08/10/2025

Use the coordinates here to navigate to about a dozen sites in a loop. All coarse gravel with picnic table and fire pits. I stayed in the second one on the left going clockwise around the loop, and was unable to stake into the ground, but there was a mown strip next to the site that was easy staking. Road is a little rutted along the sides, since it's on a hill, but navigable without issue unless you have really low clearance I would guess.

    Meade State Park Campground

    Nice little park

Camped lakeside for a quick overnight. There were a few people swimming and a few people fishing, a few RVs in the campground, no tents besides mine. Pretty lake, seemed well maintained. Shower house at the visitor center was clean and had hot water. Rangers were working in the woods near the campgrounds.

Only complaint is insects that were bad after dark - like gnats or something that didn't bite but were a nuisance.

    Goodman State Fishing Lake

Almost flipped my bus and landed in the lake...

This place is definitely not a place to go. The roads have massive chunks taken out of them and I had it back up the entire weird road. Plus I have no place to park. Every spot is grass and everything is rain-sodding. I almost flipped my bus a couple times.

Quiet Parking Lot Mostly to Ourselves

We arrived around 11:00pm. There was one other camper in the parking lot with us, but the lot is huge and we were far enough away we couldn't hear them and they couldn't hear our crying baby. Only downside is the hike to use the bathrooms. If you're comparing this to a rest stop or Walmart parking lot, this was way better. No trucks in and out all night, no traffic from the road, just the white noise of the hotel HVAC. Very well lit, cameras throughout the lot, felt very safe overall.

Ramblin Rose RV Park & Motel

Just off of Hwy59. It's very easy to just pull in.

Very quiet. Lots of trees. There is a bathroom you may use. Internet is not very good. The sites are level. We just stopped for an overnighter. The people I talked with were very friendly and helpful. 30 amp sites are $30.

    Gunsmoke RV Park

    Nicely Separated Campsites

This Campground has one of the most separated sites of the places we've stayed. Most of the sites at the rear part of the park have spaces separated by one's own grassy area and trees, where the picnic table is situated. There's a vice of 50 or 30 amp power, water, dump, showers/bathrooms, laundry, game room and pool. We had to arrive after office closure and the owner was very accommodating about sending our space number, map to the site, and codes by text. WiFi has a password, unlike a few other places with unprotected WiFi.
