Best RV Parks & Resorts near Clay Center, KS

Several RV parks surround Clay Center, Kansas, providing convenient options for motorhome travelers. Walt's Four Seasons Campground in Abilene offers year-round full hookup sites with 30/50 amp service, freshly graveled pads, and big rig accessibility. Smoky Hill RV Park features pull-through sites with full hookups and is designed to accommodate larger rigs. Covered Wagon RV Resort, open April through October, provides level sites with shade and full hookups, though one reviewer noted, "If you are looking for an overnight place or visiting Abilene, this is the place." Agenda Lane RV Park, though smaller with only three sites, offers full hookups with both 30 and 50 amp service. The Salina Campground (KOA) maintains 68 sites with concrete pads, fire pits, and full hookups for RVs of all sizes.

Seasonal considerations affect RV camping availability in the region. While some parks like Walt's Four Seasons and Golden Wheat Budget Host operate year-round, others like Covered Wagon RV Resort close during winter months. Most RV parks in the area feature sanitary dump stations, with many offering sewer hookups directly at sites. Cell service is generally strong throughout the region, with 4G signals reported at most locations. Highway proximity creates noise at some parks, particularly those near I-70. One traveler mentioned, "The sites have been freshly graveled. During the summer the lawn, gardens, pool, etc. were maintained regularly." Pet policies vary by location, with most parks allowing pets but Thunderbird Marina & RV Resort notably prohibiting them. Reservation systems are in place at most parks, with online booking available at several locations.

No reservations, First come first serve. Pull through and back in for smaller RV/campers/Vans. Power and water at each store! Free wifi, women's and men's bathrooms, level concrete spots with picnic tables, established shad trees, and grass area at each campsite.
Dog Park and 18 hole disk golf!! Basically free for donations! Not sure if shower, it's night when we arrived.

No individual fire pit (But who cares after all that!) What a neat place after a long drive day!

Walt's Four Seasons Campground & Country Store

    Exceptional family friendly campground!!

In June of 2023, my husband& I decided to move into our 42' toy hauler. We searched& searched within a 30-minute radius of our property that we had bought for a campground with great amenities and where we would feel safe with our 2 babies. Walt's is by far the safest, friendliest, fun-filled campground compared to any of the others we visited around. We were greeted with friendly faces and welcoming staff from our very first day of move-in. They made sure we got settled& hooked up ok and have continued to make us feel right at home. My husband is a truck driver so isn't always home when things go wrong with the camper. The staff has always been there to help when something happens especially when we have had issues with propane leaks, or the heater not working during the colder temps. This campground offers put-put course, swimming pool with poolside pub, horseshoes, catch& release fishing, walking trail, small dog park, playground for children, shower houses/restrooms, laundry facility, on site gas station, a country store with made to order pizzas, sandwiches& tex mex! They do several family friendly events throughout the year. At the country store they have anything of convenience that you may need from toiletries, drinks, snacks, ice cream, games, books, alcoholic beverages, etc. We absolutely love staying here. The sites have been freshly graveled. During the summer the lawn, gardens, pool, etc. Were maintained regularly and they are constantly doing updates weekly here. The best part it is also right off I-70. For long term campers that are truckers they do have a small area for semis. They also have a rentable party room inside the country store as well as outdoor areas for party rentals!

Rocky Ford Campground — Tuttle Creek State Park

    Rocky Ford campground space 141

Very shady, right off the water. A little steep to actually get to the waters edge. Fire rings with grills and picnic table. Lantern hook with water and 30 & 50 amp electric hookups. Back in spot would be a little tight for a bigger travel trailer but not bad.

    River Pond State Park Campground

    Nice State Park

The is a nice clean Kansas State Park. Lots of shady spots. Easy access to walking trails and water activities. Fire pits and picnic tables at every site. Most sites are only water and electric. There are only a half dozen or so full hook up sites and they are generally always full during camping season. There are two dump stations on site. This park is close to home for us and we camp here often.

    Stockdale

    Secluded ACOE Campground

Well maintained, gravel sites with good electric and water hookups. Dump station also provided attached hose to allow black tank flush. Verizon cell service and digital TV signal were strong. Visited Manhattan, KS and Oz Museum in Wamego, KS. Plenty to do in the area and this campground provided a nice, secluded base. Boat ramps available to allow access to Kansas’ 2nd largest lake.

Woodland Hills — Milford State Park

    Cute place!

There’s a sewage dump station the next camping loop over (Hickory Hollow) if you can’t stay at a space with a sewage hookup. Pull through and back in spaces, decent amount of shade at almost every spot, primitive and RV/Camper sites. There’s even a firewood crate ($7). Close to trails and we even saw 2 deer on our way to park. Gorgeous fall leaves this time of year (October). Water has a slight sulfur smell, but who’s sink in KS doesn’t.

Prairie View — Milford State Park

Campground Flooded With Limited Site Availability (as of September 2019)

When visiting Milford State Park one of the first camping loops you find is Prairie View Campground which is why many find it so appealing.   It has great cell signal, close proximity to the front office and highway and borders upon the lake.    But with that lake access also comes a very scary reality during rainy season.   This campground is prone to lower sites flooding when rains are abundant.    However no one could have prepared for massive rains which took an already vulnerable large campground and turned it into a very small limited access site.

Of the campgrounds available at Milford Lake this is one of the few which remain open despite waters swelling and swallowing the majority of the camp during the 2019 season.

Campsites offer electricity and picnic tables with a variety of styles of sites including pull through and back in.    However with man of these underwater it is hard to find a site currently that feels safe and high enough to merit camping here.

This campground has a lot of promise with their facility.    There is plenty of shade in the area making for a very comfortable stay when not experiencing rising waters.   There is firewood available from the campground host as you enter the campground and 2 loops for camping offer plenty of options during peak season.

Currently there are less than 10 sites available at this location, road is barricaded and the waters are literally in the backyard of all sites as it has created a peninsula.

Typically there is shore access for fishing in this campground.

    TIPS:

    • Call ahead before visiting this park as a whole to check conditions.  With limited locations for camping currently available you will be happier by checking in advance rather than coming and experiencing being turned away.
    • Book online or pay at the pay station with cash.    No cards are accepted at the pay station and mostly of the time there is no one in the check in booth at the gate.

Guide to Clay Center

Clay Center, Kansas offers several RV campgrounds within a 30-mile radius, with most sites located along the I-70 corridor or near the shores of Milford Lake. The region features rolling hills, open prairies, and wooded lake areas with elevations ranging from 1,300 to 1,500 feet. Summer temperatures often exceed 90°F while winter overnight temperatures frequently drop below freezing, affecting seasonal campground availability.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Acorn RV Resort provides direct lake access with docks for anglers. "A very beautiful lake, this area is pristine clean and water clear. A very large lake with many areas of camping and fishing," notes papa T. in a review of the Acorn RV Resort.

Historical sites: Abilene's presidential history makes a worthwhile day trip from Clay Center area RV parks. "It's just down the street from President Dwight D Eisenhower presidential museum and library," explains Cande D. about the Covered Wagon RV Resort, adding "Check out the The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad heritage railway. Ride the Flint Hills Express on track built by the Rock Island Railroad in 1886!"

Family recreation: Many campgrounds near Clay Center feature kid-friendly amenities. According to jacob B., Thunderbird Marina offers "all kinds of outdoor fun for kids too such as playgrounds and a basketball court!" The waterfront location provides additional activities for families seeking outdoor recreation.

What campers like

Lakefront camping: Sites at West Rolling Hills offer scenic water views on multiple sides. "Many lakefront sites, scenic & quiet. Very windy during our stay. A great place to just come & relax," shares Bob M. about the West Rolling Hills campground.

Accessible pull-throughs: Smoky Hill RV Park features long, well-maintained sites designed for larger vehicles. "The sites are long (several large RVs on site), with services and picnic tables on cement patios," explains Martin-Charles S., adding that the campground is "Well-maintained" and "Ideal for an overnight stay on the road."

Clean facilities: Reviewers frequently mention the cleanliness of bathroom facilities at rv campgrounds near Clay Center, Kansas. "The bathroom and shower were exceptionally clean," writes Paul B. about Walt's Four Seasons Campground, which offers full amenities including a pool, fishing pond, and nature trail.

What you should know

Seasonal closures: While some Clay Center area RV parks operate year-round, many have limited seasons. "This area looks fabulous. I was looking forward to staying here in early November, but it was closed. All the Corps campgrounds close for the winter," reports Mimi about West Rolling Hills.

Highway noise: Several campgrounds sit close to major highways, creating potential noise issues. "Close to the highway was our only downfall. Kinda loud when trying to fall asleep at night," mentions Katelynn C. about Walt's Four Seasons, though she still rated it 5 stars overall.

Pet policies: Not all RV parks welcome pets, so check before booking. Thunderbird Marina & RV Resort specifically prohibits pets while most other locations in the area allow them with standard restrictions.

Tips for camping with families

Look for multi-activity parks: Walt's Four Seasons offers numerous family-friendly features. "This campground offers put-put course, swimming pool with poolside pub, horseshoes, catch& release fishing, walking trail, small dog park, playground for children," explains Courtney P., who stayed long-term at the campground with her family.

Check for swimming options: Some campgrounds provide beach access for cooling off during hot Kansas summers. The Smoky Hill RV Park reviewer Chasing the S. notes it has "great dog park and small kids area" making it suitable for families even on shorter stays.

Consider cabins for non-RV families: Several locations offer alternative lodging. "A group of friends rented a cabin at Acorns Resort. the cabins are spacious and well maintained and we had one right down from the water!" shares Kaitlin M., highlighting the flexibility for family groups without RVs.

Tips from RVers

Electrical considerations: Check power pedestals before setting up. "My only concerns are the electric pedestal had a bulge below the socket, which wouldn't fit my surge protector. My electric went out, and I had to reset the breaker," warns Paul B. about Walt's Four Seasons.

Space between sites: RV parks vary in spacing and privacy. Sara H. from Walt's Four Seasons selected a "longer type... this just meant we'd be a bit further out in the less heavily used area, with water and electric only($30)," showing how site selection affects experience.

Level sites: Dan N. specifically mentioned "Level sites a plus" when reviewing Walt's Four Seasons, highlighting an important practical consideration for RVers selecting campgrounds near Clay Center, Kansas.
