Walt's Four Seasons Campground & Country Store

    Exceptional family friendly campground!!

In June of 2023, my husband& I decided to move into our 42' toy hauler. We searched& searched within a 30-minute radius of our property that we had bought for a campground with great amenities and where we would feel safe with our 2 babies. Walt's is by far the safest, friendliest, fun-filled campground compared to any of the others we visited around. We were greeted with friendly faces and welcoming staff from our very first day of move-in. They made sure we got settled& hooked up ok and have continued to make us feel right at home. My husband is a truck driver so isn't always home when things go wrong with the camper. The staff has always been there to help when something happens especially when we have had issues with propane leaks, or the heater not working during the colder temps. This campground offers put-put course, swimming pool with poolside pub, horseshoes, catch& release fishing, walking trail, small dog park, playground for children, shower houses/restrooms, laundry facility, on site gas station, a country store with made to order pizzas, sandwiches& tex mex! They do several family friendly events throughout the year. At the country store they have anything of convenience that you may need from toiletries, drinks, snacks, ice cream, games, books, alcoholic beverages, etc. We absolutely love staying here. The sites have been freshly graveled. During the summer the lawn, gardens, pool, etc. Were maintained regularly and they are constantly doing updates weekly here. The best part it is also right off I-70. For long term campers that are truckers they do have a small area for semis. They also have a rentable party room inside the country store as well as outdoor areas for party rentals!

Big Bluestem Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

Perfect spot for camping, Kayaking, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking… or chillaxing!

Big Bluestem Campground Site 78! Prime spot with large shade tree to block western sun. 20’ from water’s edge with path to drop kayaks in, swim or even sit lawn chairs into the water to cool off. Noted as largest saltwater and clearest lake in Kansas. 30/50A/120V and water hookups. Concrete pad. Clean showers a few hundred yards away. Trash bin in middle of loop. Marina two loops away; about 4 minute drive. Outstanding rock formations, reminds me of Utah. Water levels effect access to some formations. Great time, great weather, we’ll be back soon! T-Mobile service 1-4 bars. Streamed HotSpot for ROKU without issues.

Big Bluestem Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

    AKA Big Bluestem

This area is the Big Bluestem campground. There is a shower/restroom area at the beginning, hiking trails and primitive sites. Then you enter Big Bluestem campground which has two loops. One has pull through sites and the other has mostly back in sites. Each site has electric, water, fire ring, and picnic benches. There are some really nice views from the outer sites.

Switchgrass Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

    Switchgrass/Grama campgrounds

Switchgrass and Grama campgrounds are in the same area. Switchgrass is a primitive area with picnic tables and fire rings. You can drive up to these sites and there are some really nice ones next to the water. There is also an area that is shaded. Grama are electric sites with the outer loop being pull thrus and the inner back in. They too have fire rings and tables. There is a restroom and water spigots in the area.

Wheatgrass Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

    Beautiful lake views

This campground has 51 sites at $21 per night. Each site has electric, water, picnic table, and fire ring. The outside loop sites are pull through with beautiful lake views. The inner loop is back in sites with a view of the lake but nothing like the outside one. This area has few trees for shade and unfortunately no wind break. There is a swimming beach and a small fishing hole for kids. We camped at site 45 and 46 and had a small beach area that we could put our kayaks in. We had a beautiful view of the water and rolling hills. Each time we opened our door we instantly saw the lake and for most of the time it felt as if we were the only ones there. One thing that frustrated us was that the sites were either reserved or said One Day Only and there was no one at the camp host spot, the booth, or the office so we had to keep moving.

    Lucas Park

Well Maintained Campground Amidst Rolling Kansas Hills

I took a detour off the flat highway land in search of the town of Lucas where I had heard great things about their art installations. As I drove along the land began to open up to large rolling hills and beautiful landscaping with a turnoff just off the main road marked by some very interesting stones and a pavilion. I took a moment to pull off and noticed a kiosk which told the history of the area and some very impressive information about Lucas Park.

I was impressed by the information and one of the signs detailing the trails which led from just outside of the campground all the way to a very special cliffside which is renowned in the state of Kansas. So naturally I had to go check it out!!

Pulling into camp it had rained recently and some of the gravel roads were a bit slick for my small car, but I did notice they had some road work signs where they are working to improve these areas. The rest of the property was well developed and had great improvements including full service restrooms which were placed throughout camp and nice playground equipment for the kiddos.

The campground is divided into two separate areas. Each with their own unique appeal. I personally liked the campground closest to the pay station as it seemed to have better overall access to amenities such as community water. There was a good mix of campsites at this location with pull through and back in options with sites ranging vastly in overall spacing.

As a tent camper, I typically look for shaded areas which provide a little shelter from the elements and they did have several of these in this campground. Water access to the lake was also very close by although I didn’t see a swimming beach at the time of my visit. This could have been in part due to the rains and the lake levels or it could be that there indeed was not one in this area.

I had decent cell signal at this campground on AT&T.

    **TIPS: **

    • On weekends make sure to book in advance, the lake is one of the biggest draws of the area.
    • Drive into town and check out the“US Largest Toilet Bowl” art installation,“Garden of Eden” and the downtown district where you can find a few unique pieces. Don’t forget to stop off and try some of the famous Lucas bologna.
    • Check out the trail on the property to the rocks!

Yarrow Otoe Area Campground — Wilson State Park

Most Coveted Campground of the State Park

Wilson’s Lake in Kansas is something of a departure from surrounding areas of Kansas. If you take a moment to pull just a slight distance off the major highways and toward the Wilson’s Lake area you will be pleasantly surprised as the world begins to roll and open up into vibrant hillsides winding their way though the area.

I honestly stopped myself for a moment and checked the map thinking to myself in such a cliche way,“ We are not in Kansas anymore.”

But just as the map proved, I was in fact still in the same state, I noticed more and more signs for Wilson’s Lake State Park and found it was a must see while visiting the area.

The road winds you down to the park and down to what seems like a dead end just at the Yarrow Campground. This campground is one of the most coveted in the park because of its location, its convenience and its size.

When visiting Wilson Lake you might want to consider this loop for improved camping.   When I visited I noticed that the roadways in and out of the campsite were well structured to provide ample movement for larger units with back up capabilities.   While this loop also offers tent camping, it really is designed for the small to mid-size RVs.

Each campsite was equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, although I must say that some of the tables in this area were lacking a bit and needed some updating.    The sites also included water and electric hook ups with reasonable spacing between sites.   Pull- in/ back-in sites were graveled and semi level while the area between the spaces were grassy and lush.    During summer months this would be a perfect retreat for families looking to have a little fun together but still have convenience.

What I liked most about this particular site was the proximity it had to the swimming beach and also the restrooms.   Within 100 yards of one another you could access flushing toilets and showers or fun in the sun.     This was the best overall campground for accessing both of these amenities and therefore I believe would bring about the most fun for the family overall.   Additionally, a playground was located nearby.

I would definitely recommend arriving early if visiting on a weekend or making reservations online to ensure a site at this campground in particular.   The most popular of this lake region, Yarrow, stays booked well into the later portion of summer on weekends and is hit or miss on weekdays.

    TIPS:

    * Check out the rental shop just outside of the park where you can find anything from a paddle board to a canoe.   Also this is a great place to check in if you are needing a few last minute supplies.

    * Make sure to check out park rules at the kiosk before entering, this can be very valuable information especially when crowds are flocking to the area.

Guide to Brookville

Brookville, Kansas is surrounded by camping options within 40 miles of town, including several state parks and privately owned RV sites. Located in the Smoky Hills region of Kansas at an elevation of 1,358 feet, the area experiences hot summers and mild springs and falls, making April through October the most popular camping months. Winter camping is available at several year-round facilities, though services may be limited during colder months.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Eagle Point Campground in Kanopolis State Park, campers can enjoy lakeside recreation with convenient water access. "Very nice place to camp. Its peaceful, right on water and would stay again," notes Amanda N. The park is approximately 34 miles southwest of Brookville.

Historic exploration: Visit the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum near Covered Wagon RV Resort in Abilene. "It's just down the street from President Dwight D Eisenhower presidential museum and library," reports Cande D. The historic Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad also offers heritage railway rides on tracks built in 1886.

Family activities: Multiple campgrounds offer recreational options beyond camping. "The Wifi works great, especially after this is the first time I had wifi since leaving home. The pool, fishpond, kids playground, nature trail, and dog park are just some of the amenities," writes Paul B. about his stay at Walt's Four Seasons Campground.

What campers like

Clean facilities: RV camping near Brookville, Kansas often features well-maintained bathhouses and common areas. "The bathrooms here were warm on a cold night and very clean. You could tell they take care of this facility very well," says Crystal C. about Salina Campground.

Convenient interstate access: Many campgrounds offer easy highway access for travelers passing through. "Convenient location along I-70 meant lots of highway noise. Being right on I-70 was great for a quick stop over," notes Joy F. This makes these locations practical for single-night stays when traveling across Kansas.

Spacious sites: Several parks feature ample space between RVs. At Inman RV Park, "We weren't given an arrival deadline, no forms or markers - had our choice of the available spots," shares James H., appreciating the laid-back approach and $25 full hookup sites.

What you should know

Highway noise considerations: Campgrounds near interstates offer convenience but come with traffic sounds. "It's located right off I-70 and the traffic is easily heard," notes one reviewer about a site near Salina. For quieter options, consider Lakeside RV Park where Matt B. reports, "Stayed here for a few weeks for work, great place, nice spots...not too far from Salina."

Weather variability: Kansas weather can change rapidly, especially during spring and fall. Pack for temperature swings of 30+ degrees in a single day. Storms can develop quickly during summer months.

Reservation requirements: Many private campgrounds in the area accept walk-ins, but state parks and popular RV parks often fill on weekends from May through September. Most campgrounds accept online reservations 3-6 months in advance.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer play equipment for children. "My kids loved the ping pong, basketball, inflatable jump pad, old metal playground and outdoor pool," reports Blair about Salina Campground, adding that "mosquitos were bad at dusk and dawn."

Swimming options: During summer months, pools provide relief from heat. "During the summer the lawn, gardens, pool, etc. were maintained regularly," notes Courtney P. about Walt's Four Seasons, which also features a "poolside pub" for adults.

Mini-golf entertainment: Set in Stone Cabins and RV Park offers compact but comfortable family camping. "This property is small and comfortable. The cabins are SO sweet! Kay & Richard have clearly put a lot of love into this spot," writes Ashley F. Several nearby parks also offer mini-golf as family entertainment.

Tips from RVers

Big rig accommodations: For larger motorhomes, select campgrounds specifically advertising big-rig friendly spaces. "Level sites a plus," notes Dan N. about Walt's Four Seasons, which can accommodate larger RVs.

Hookup variations: Check whether sites offer 30-amp or 50-amp service before booking. Some parks like McPherson RV Ranch provide both options, while others may limit availability of certain hookups.

Late arrival policies: For travelers reaching Brookville area campgrounds after office hours, confirm check-in procedures. Emily L. appreciated that at Inman RV Park, "The hosts were friendly & accommodating, letting us pay in the morning at checkout."
