The man-made reservoir spans approximately 15,250 acres with 51 miles of shoreline where campsites range from primitive to developed. Weather conditions shift dramatically between seasons with summer highs often reaching into the 90s while spring and fall camping offers more moderate temperatures in the 60-70°F range.
What to do
Hiking the Volksweg Trail: The trail connects to North Overlook Camp and offers excellent walking paths for visitors of all abilities. "The North Overlook site is part of a much larger group of COE campgrounds on Lake Red Rock. It is heavily shaded and offers direct access to a large beach on the lake complete with shower houses and concessions... The campground is located directly on the Volksweg trail which offers excellent opportunities for any level of hiker or bicyclist," notes Dan R.
Fishing from docks: Access fishing spots at Whitebreast Camp where you can catch various species. "Beautiful campground, well maintained, lots of trees. Sits on the bank of Red Rock Lake which has great fishing," explains Derrick W. Laura B. adds, "Has some very nice shaded spots. Can walk down to the dock. We love to camp there every Fourth of July."
Birdwatching along the shoreline: The lake attracts various bird species including bald eagles and herons. Jay M. reports at Howell Station, "CG is well kept, has a bike/walking path that borders the River and winds through the woods... Baths/showers were very clean and well kept up." Tiffany K. notes it's "along a river for fishing and bird watching."
What campers like
Spacious, separated sites: Many campgrounds offer good distance between neighbors. "The campground itself is very nice. There is a lot of space between campsites, which is awesome! Our site had a great view of the lake, as well," reports Molly L. about Whitebreast Red Rock Lake. Miles M. confirms: "We had site 24, sites were very spaced out and they are only on one side of the road so no sites backed up to ours. Plenty of room for our dogs."
Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain well-kept bathrooms and shower facilities. A camper at Wallashuck notes, "Very nice campground, each sight has a fire ring and table, plus a lantern pole. It is in a city park like setting and on the lake. Fire wood for sale at the entrance, you have to get water at the entrance only electrical hook up. Showers are very clean and there is also a children's play ground."
Primitive camping options: For those seeking a quieter experience away from developed campgrounds, several options exist. Evan G. describes Nature Haven at Red Rock Lake: "The perfect drive up private campsite you will find in Iowa. Very quiet with a beautiful view of three ponds and a sunset you will not want to miss. There are four campsites and a soon-to-be glamp site. Spacious, tranquil, and private."
What you should know
Beach conditions vary: Some beaches have muddy areas rather than pure sand. Molly L. cautions about Whitebreast beach: "As you made your way further down and into the water, there was muddy, wet clay and the beach floor was slimy and muddy. I even saw a young boy lose his shoes in the wet clay! I would return to the campground and kayak the lake, but I wouldn't recommend the beach!"
Seasonal restrictions: Many campgrounds operate on a limited schedule from spring through fall. Howell Station runs from "April 10 to October 27" while Whitebreast Camp operates from "April 24 to September 29." Plan accordingly as most facilities close during winter months.
Tick prevention: When hiking or camping with pets, be prepared for ticks. Abby M. warns about Grant Park: "Let's talk ticks!! I travel with my dog and during the 3 nights I stayed, I was constantly removing them from him, myself and within the inside of my van. They always got on his feet every time he used the restroom and made their way inside. If you travel with a pet, check them constantly and make sure they are on a tick med!"
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Otley feature play areas for children. Michael W. notes Wallashuck has a "children's play ground" alongside other amenities. Similarly, Renee H. observed at Howell Station: "The grounds have play sets and swings for kids. There are some great paved paths to walk or bike."
Beach proximity: Some campsites provide easier beach access than others. Dan R. highlights North Overlook Camp: "It is heavily shaded and offers direct access to a large beach on the lake complete with shower houses and concessions. Red Rock is the largest lake in the state and can accommodate any size water craft."
Site selection for privacy: For families camping with pets near Otley, some areas offer better privacy and space. Amanda H. shares about Wallashuck: "We were able to camp in a tent near RVs without feeling crowded. The restrooms, showers, and playground were all close by…great for camping with kids. There were some nicer than ours and some with less privacy or further away than we'd prefer."
Tips from RVers
Electric-only hookups: Most campgrounds provide electric but limited water or sewer connections. At Howell Station, Renee H. notes: "Gravel sites, a little bit of leveling required. Poor Verizon cell signal, no internet signal... The potable water available at the dump station was clear and good for drinking. Dump station is easily accessible."
Weather considerations: The area experiences severe weather that requires preparation. Renee H. describes a situation at Howell Station: "The night we stayed, there was a severe weather threat, and the staff, at the end of the night, had unlocked the storm shelters (utility area in the middle of the bathhouses) should the need arise. We ended up having to seek shelter because of a tornado warning."
Site layout variations: Different campgrounds offer varied layouts and experiences for RVs. At Whitebreast Red Rock Lake, Jeff O. mentions it has "Lots of shade, quiet." While Paul M. describes Whitebreast Camp as having "Large sites and plenty of space between sites," making it suitable for RVers with pets who need room to setup comfortably.
