    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Central Iowa's camping landscape around Minburn includes several established campgrounds within a 30-minute drive. Jester County Park in Granger offers year-round camping with tent sites, RV hookups, cabins, and glamping options. Ledges State Park Campground near Madrid features distinctive sandstone formations and varied terrain unusual for Iowa, with camping available from April through December. The Saylorville Lake area hosts multiple recreation areas including Prairie Flower, Cherry Glen, and Acorn Valley campgrounds, providing water access and diverse accommodation types. Timberline Campground in Waukee maintains 168 sites with high ratings for its facilities and tranquil setting, operating from April through November.

Most campgrounds in the region require reservations during peak summer months, with many sites booking up weeks in advance for holiday weekends. County parks like Swede Point typically offer more affordable rates, with electric sites around $18 and primitive sites as low as $11 per night. Weather considerations include hot, humid summers and occasional severe thunderstorms from June through August. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the area, though some coverage gaps exist in more remote sections of state parks. According to camper Wendy P., "Beware of the raccoons at Ledges State Park. They're plentiful and crazy smart here. We had one open our cooler and steal an egg without disturbing anything else."

Shaded sites receive consistently positive mentions in camper reviews, particularly important during Iowa's hot summer months. Timberline Campground earns praise for its "outstanding facilities, beautiful and tranquil location," while Jester Park campers appreciate the spacious sites that can accommodate "two vehicles and two sizable tents." Weekday camping typically offers more solitude, with one reviewer noting, "During the week you can almost have the place to yourself... it is a different story on the weekends." Family-friendly amenities like playgrounds, fishing lakes, and hiking trails are common at larger parks. Several campgrounds feature paved biking trails, including Swede Point Park which provides convenient access to the Iowa High Trestle Trail, a popular cycling route through the countryside.

      Thomas Mitchell County Park

      Kind hosts and well-kept grounds

This is a sweet well-maintained campground just south of Mitchellville, Iowa off of 80. Not many sites and only a handful were occupied mid week in July. There is a little stream running along the edge of the campground. There is one bathroom building with 6 separate rooms - each with a toilet, sink and shower with warm water. Plenty of drinking water at centralized locations. There is shade at most sites when you first enter the campground and in the loop. Along the edges (inc the stream) shade is more variable. The only issue we had was a bright light that was on all night near the end of the loop. We were in site 5 and had to move our truck so it didn’t shine in all night.

      Adair City Park

      Small town city park camping

Nice little city park camping area in Adair, Iowa. Basically 3-5 spots in the city park next to a bath house with showers! and a playground. We were the only campers that night (a Saturday). The town's main street is being repaved, so our little city park road was the main detour road, so we had a bit of traffic off and on. We drove about 10 miles down the road to Casey for ice cream and they have a similar city park camping area. It looked a bit nicer and we considered moving but decided to stay in Adair since we'd already paid our $10 (didn't need electric) and were pretty settled. Overall, a nice spot for a quick overnighter.

Bob Shelter Recreation Area & Campground

      Good spot

Staying here for a night on a roadtrip. It was easy to book last minute and wasn’t too expensive. Especially given it has electric hook up at each sight (I believe).

      Ledges State Park Campground

      Oasis in a cornfield

There’s not a lot going on in the vicinity of this state park, which is on the smaller side, and you will hear some cows, but all in all the campground exceeded my expectations for the two nights I stayed. This was partially because my site, 65, offered ample room away from the neighboring sites and backed up to a small green area with the road further back (minimal noise, aside from the random loud dirt bike). It also had a good mix of shade and sun if you’re hoping for a bit of solar charging, though no shore power or water. The site was long and mostly level with just the smallest tilt, but not enough to be a bother even without leveling blocks. The dumpster is nearby, but it’s a tiny one and was well maintained (aka not smelly). The brand new shower house was within easy walking distance as well. I had enough service (Verizon) to send texts and watch a bit of YouTube (buffering times were a smidge slow), but you likely wouldn’t have a strong enough signal for much more.

      Dallas County Fairgrounds

      Swim rodeo

We booked this spot in February not knowing there was a rodeo on our camp day we were in town for a swim meet, the band was real loud Friday and perfect on Saturday, it has narrow camping spots but overall is a very good campground with full hook ups. Booked on line everything went smooth, great WiFi clean campground.

    Guide to Minburn

Camping sites near Minburn, Iowa offer outdoor enthusiasts variety amid Iowa's agricultural landscape. Central Iowa's terrain features a mix of rolling hills and river valleys with elevations ranging from 850 to 1,050 feet above sea level. Most campgrounds maintain operating seasons from April through October, with limited winter camping options available at select locations like Jester County Park.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Cherry Glen Campground provides access to Saylorville Lake with multiple fishing spots. "Love this it's close to the city yet feel so far away," notes camper S.K., highlighting the surprising wilderness feel despite proximity to urban areas.

Hiking unique terrain: Ledges State Park Campground offers exceptional hiking trails with elevation changes unusual for Iowa. "I would say it was a challenging hike. A lot of up and down terrain, stone steps, etc. The ledges along the river were beautiful and depending on the river height you can walk right along them," reports Jennifer M.

Wildlife viewing: Take advantage of wildlife watching opportunities at various parks. At Jester County Park, Luke C. mentions "Good fishing nice open areas and trails to explore. Lots of cool kid activities. Buffalo ranch near by which is cool as well as Pingora outdoor supply store near by where you can purchase firewood and other camp supplies."

Biking access: The region connects to extensive cycling infrastructure. Swede Point Park offers convenient access to regional trails. One visitor notes, "Nice little camp ground with easy access to the high trestle bike trail," making it ideal for cyclists looking to explore beyond the campground.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Acorn Valley receives consistent praise for maintenance. "Campsites are well kept and clean. Bathrooms are immaculate and cleaned every day," reports John F., though he warns campers should "Secure your food and they're no problem unless you're a light sleeper" due to resident raccoons.

Spacious sites: Many campgrounds offer room to spread out. At Timberline Campground, Bradley N. appreciates that "This place is wonderful. The staff are all extremely friendly and accommodating. Facilities are all very clean and well taken care of."

Lakeside views: Prairie Flower Recreation Area provides scenic water vistas. Heather S. shares, "Sites are large and there is plenty of space between sites. We had a concrete pad with a picnic table and fire pit with grill grate. Most are back in sites, but once settled we had a gorgeous view of the lake and sunsets."

Budget-friendly options: Sportsman Park offers exceptional value. Amy G. notes, "If you wanted a tent site without electric, it was only $8. Electric sites were only $12. And the sites were incredibly well groomed. They were clean (I didn't see any trash). And they were tucked into the woods."

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. At Des Moines West KOA Holiday, Tanja M. shares, "Although we were arriving after 10pm, we could still check in without a reservation! They have an awesome 'self check in'. A board marked with available spaces we chose from."

Dump station congestion: Plan accordingly for departure logistics. At Prairie Flower Recreation Area, Elizabeth A. warns, "Now my one complaint - there's one dump station for a campground that is large is size and popularity. Trying to leave on a Sunday is a good 1 hour wait.... that's being generous!"

Site preferences: Not all sites offer the same experience. At Bob Shelter Recreation Area, Wendy H. recommends specific locations: "We stayed at spot 20 which was extra wide, concrete pad with electric hook up. No water or sewer. Spot 20 is at the end which makes it very private with nice large grassy area adjacent to wooded area."

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds close after summer. Matt S. notes about Acorn Valley, "I tried to stay at Acorn Valley to find out it is closed after Labor Day. Bummer." Check operating dates before planning fall trips.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Position your site strategically near recreation areas. At Bob Shelter Recreation Area & Campground, Julian B. appreciates that it's a "Great spot located next to the Des Moines River. Check in was a breeze and conveniently near the fill and dump stations. Peaceful lot near the river."

Water activities: Numerous campgrounds offer water-based recreation. At Ledges State Park, Jennifer M. shares that "The ledges along the river were beautiful and depending on the river height you can walk right along them! It's also fun for kids to take a dip in."

Wildlife education: Campgrounds feature nature learning opportunities. Jim S. at Jester County Park reports, "Nature/Conservancy center there is just next level. They advertise Elk and Bison which are smart enough to stay far away from humans, as it should be."

Weekend planning: Prepare for busier conditions during peak times. As Kent B. observes about Jester Park, "Pretty nice park during the week, on weekends it is way too crowded."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose your spot based on specific needs. At Timberline Campground, Roxanna L. advises, "Sites were pretty level, sizable that our 43' motorhome and tow fit without unhooking. We just stayed over night since we're heading home."

Utilities availability: Check hook-up options before booking. Ron M. at Prairie Flower notes, "Spacious campsites with cement pads... The only thing holding it back from 5 stars is no water or sewer onsite."

Water access planning: Bring adequate hose length for filling tanks. Ron B. shares about Prairie Flower Recreation Area, "The campground has no water connections at sites but in group camping there is a one water connection to fill tanks. On large loops you will need a lot of hose to reach. I think I needed about 80' some campers will need 100'."

Noise considerations: Be aware of surrounding environment. Mia L. mentions about Timberline Campground, "Can hear shots from gun range next door. Dog park, pool, arcade. We have camped here a couple times, and stored our rig here for a while."
