Best Campgrounds near Davis City, IA

Campgrounds near Davis City, Iowa span from developed park settings to primitive forest sites within a 30-mile radius. Nine Eagles State Park Campground offers tent, RV, and cabin accommodations with electric hookups and shower facilities, while Grand Trace State Forest across the Missouri border provides free dispersed camping options without developed amenities. Several other established campgrounds populate the region, including Slip Bluff County Park directly in Davis City and Little River Recreation Area about 15 miles northeast, creating a spectrum of camping experiences from fully serviced to minimalist.

Road access varies significantly across the region's camping areas, with established campgrounds typically offering well-maintained entrances suitable for larger vehicles. "The sites are 20 dollars. The campsites located near the entrance are pull-through but need maintenance. The campsites along the lake will support short to medium length RVs or trailers, and all are back in," noted one visitor about a nearby lake campground. Most developed campgrounds operate seasonally, with Nine Eagles State Park open from April through December, while other facilities like Slip Bluff County Park remain accessible year-round. Cell coverage proves adequate near major highways but may diminish in more remote areas, particularly at dispersed sites.

Campers consistently mention water access as a significant feature at several area campgrounds. The 70-acre lake at Nine Eagles State Park provides fishing opportunities, while Little River Recreation Area offers both fishing access and boat rentals. According to one visitor, "Nice little campground 4.5 miles off the freeway...Most RV sites with power, walk-in tent sites without. Rates are great $12/15. Showers and flush toilets onsite as well as cabin rentals, canoe rental and firewood available." Electric hookups are common at established campgrounds throughout the region, though amenities like shower facilities, drinking water, and dump stations vary considerably. Grand Trace State Forest campsites, while primitive, receive positive reviews for their solitude and dark sky conditions, making them popular for stargazing despite the lack of facilities.

    Lake Paho

    Great

This is a very basic campground with trash graveled spots, which are relatively flat and pit toilets. Rode around the lake on my bike. And there were at least 4 different camp spots and several spots for access for boats. All well, maintained and well laid out. I'm extraordinarily pleasantly pleased with the campgrounds. It was free, which is pretty awesome and there's a number of spots like this in missouri, this being our first spot was quite exciting. I don't know about the sparsely used. It's mid-november and the campground is half full. The other campgrounds had campers in them as well, all with the same amenities.

    Nine Eagles State Park Campground

    Big park. Lots of trails

This park is huge with a lot of trails most of which are not on a map and a map isnt provided out on them either so one just kind of has to make guesses on where to go. The electric campground is completely exposed to the sun. Nice right now but has to be brutal in the summer and the sites are right on top of one another as well. It is also a long ways from the beach as is the primitive campground. Horse campground is adorable but there are only primitive sites there which I always find so surprising. They have multiple trails leaving from there though which is cool. Firewood is sold in the small town a mile away and there is a very old cemetery right outside of the park which is cool to meander through. Bathrooms were closed but the water and electric were on and the price is very reasonable.

    Slip Bluff County Park

    Surprised but pleased

First, you have to want to get here. Pretty long drive on rougher gravel roads. Fine for a car or truck but the dashboard and dust will affect your RV. But, campground is cute, nicely laid out, work put in to make flat spots which have some privacy and all under huge and beautiful oak trees. Trails all through the property. Loads of trails around the lake. Everything one needs from water, trash, bathrooms and electricity with 5g Verizon access.

    Fifes Grove Co Park

    Nice quiet park

There's a handful of first come. First served sights with electric water is available. Trash firewood and put toilets are also available. There are several nice hikes around the park and across the street is a sizable lake, and you're only a mile or two from town.

    Poe Hollow County Park

Small modern campground near road with road noise

We stopped for a night. It's a small circular campground that provides electric water, trash recycling, wood and a pit toilet. The sights are very small, very close and very uneven. Also, there's a busy road, just feet away. That has a lot of road noise. They can even be heard through a closed up camper. There's a great trail that leads to a 2 mile paved trail. Note there are stairs if you take your bike. You will have to carry them up the stairs.

    Kokesh Co Park

Cute but no way to park flat

Very basic small county campground. Three spots with electric tiny playground area and some spots for tents. Pit toilet electric water, those are the services. Impossible to park a small camper van flat, though I completely would have stayed and done some exploring in the area, but literally impossible to get flat. Nice ring. Of trees around the outside so protected from the wind. Cute grass well maintained. I just wish they'd made the camping area for R. V's flat. This is also not for big rigs. If you're gonna come, you gotta come with something small enough to fit into the spaces.

    Marlin Fogle Rec Area

    Simple but complete services

This is a small but fairly well maintained campground. Spots don't have a view of the lake which is a little odd. And there's a town right there. Surprising number of people at the campground for this time of the year. All there is is electric and water and trash, but there must be at least eight campers here right now.

Lake of Three Fires State Park Campground

Rated so high due to the trails

Tons of miles for biking and hiking and if you fold in the trails on the public lands around, more then anyone can do in a weekend. We'll maintained. Campground, not so much. That would get a much lower score if I rated just that. Very few electric spots and they are close and in disrepair. Bathrooms are oddly placed like the group campground would need to walk all the way across the picnic area to have any access. Once they close the shower facilities, some campgrounds have no bathrooms available. Oddly, there is a LOT of vehicles driving through which for winter was surprising. All in, lots of trees, nice beach, Frisbee golf, super interesting cemetery right outside the property and loads of other public lands all sitting around a very nice lake. But bridges out, an entire row of non-working electric posts and weird bathroom placement leads to an overall odd use of a state park.

    Fifes Grove Co Park

    Peaceful and quiet campground

I had the campground to myself on 1-Nov-2025! There are 6 sites with electric service (50/30/20 amp) with some being reservable and others first come first served. Water spigots are available to fill your camper or for tent camper use by sites 1 and 6. Sites are fairly close together, so no privacy on the sides. The sites are all back-in and back up to a beautiful open prairie/forest mix. Sites can accommodate up to 27-30 foot travel trailers, maximum. Sites are gravel and not level. There is one large tent camping site. No dumping facilities are available at the park. There is a fishing pond at the entrance of the campground. The pond also has a walking trail around it. By site 6, there are two outhouses, a covered picnic shelter and a playground.

Overall, my experience here has been great. While there is a 14 day maximum stay limit, I just spent one night as I was passing through the area. Verizon cell phone and internet service was very good.

Fishing opportunities: Little River Recreation Area offers abundant fishing. "The lake has a lot of fish in it I hear... Family friendly," reports Eugene B. The recreation area includes boat rentals and multiple fishing docks.

Dark sky viewing: Grand Trace State Forest provides exceptional stargazing conditions due to minimal light pollution. "Very nice view of the lake, lots of campsites around the lake. Not many lights around and no big cities and a low horizon so it's a good place to visit for a visual observation night with a telescope or binos," writes Greg B.

Day trip to casino: Campsites near Davis City allow easy access to nearby gaming. "If you are here to gamble, you will love it. If you are here to rest, you will love it," explains Vita M. about the nearby casino RV park, which offers full hookups and paved spaces.

What campers like

Quiet surroundings: Nine Eagles State Park Campground provides a peaceful atmosphere. "We arrived on Thursday evening. After a short debate we opted to pay the extra money for an electric site," reports Uhura G., who appreciated that "Though it was definitely busier come Friday night not all the sites were full and most seemed to be retired or semi-so with grandkids. No party atmosphere."

Ease of access: Eagle Ridge RV Park offers convenience for travelers. "Close to the interstate but not noisy," mentions Patricia O., while another camper notes it's "far enough away you wouldn't know it."

Free camping options: Grand Trace State Forest provides no-cost sites with basic amenities. "The location is easy to find even at night. The road is well maintained, the grass is mowed and spots are flat. There are about 13 distinct spots, 8 tent spots, 4 small camper spots and one large parking lot area that could fit just about anything," explains Kyle K.

Off-grid experience: Campsites in the more remote areas offer a break from connectivity. "Safe place although I am a manly man so I do not worry. Safe for females I mean. About 30 minutes to Bethany proper where civilization is. 3 bar Verizon reception," reports Bobby B. about his five-day stay at Grand Trace State Forest.

What you should know

Seasonal facilities: Water availability varies by season and location at Nine Eagles State Park. "We later discovered it was also off at the swimming beach," notes Uhura G., adding "Finding a place to pitch a tent in the electric loop was a challenge but we did find one that had enough level grass."

Site conditions: Poe Hollow County Park maintains its grounds well. "Nice campground with mowed grass and picnic tables in the trees. Power hookups available and covered/enclosed group areas," reports Andrew T.

Limited amenities at dispersed sites: Grand Trace State Forest offers very basic facilities. "Very small camp area, only 4 sites. No toilets so bring a bucket. No pick nick benches. There are fire rings at each site," notes Terry F.

Reservation policies: Most county parks operate on a first-come basis. At Little River Recreation Area, one camper mentioned, "This small county park (16 electric, 14 tent sites plus three cabins) is not reservable which might be an issue on summer weekends but on a Sunday in April, was no problem."

Tips for camping with families

The youth group site is a large open space surrounded by tall trees. The grass is well maintained and the campsite is clean and beautiful," explains Matt S.

Accessibility considerations: Some campgrounds accommodate visitors with mobility needs. "My wife and I feel safe in this park. I am in a wheelchair and this park allows me to move around freely," notes Vita M. about the level concrete pads.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling issues: Some campgrounds have uneven surfaces. "The concrete in our site was in poor condition, it had crumbled leaving a dip in the pad," notes Renee H.

Hookup reliability: Eagle Ridge RV Park maintains quality connections. "Full hookups and friendly staff. Good wifi. If you're looking for a beautiful park, this is it!" writes Sean & Holly H.

Site selection strategy: Little River Recreation Area requires careful site choice. "Each site has a generous-sized picnic table and fire ring. Some sites are better than others, however. Sites 2 and 3 (both electric) are sloped down and the driveway is a bit overgrown," advises Lee D.

Overnight convenience: Locations like Buffalo Run RV Park serve well for transit stops. "This campground is close to I35 and makes a great stop on road trips if you're heading south! Affordable and quiet," notes Tori K.
