    Nine Eagles State Park Campground

    Nine Eagles - Youth Campground

Nine Eagles is near Lamoni, Iowa near the Iowa-Missouri border right off of Interstate 35. I camped here with my son and his Boy Scout troop in the youth group part of the campground. I can't speak for the rest of the park's camping facilities, but the youth group site is a large open space surrounded by tall trees. The grass is well maintained and the campsite is clean and beautiful. There are not any bathroom facilities at the campsite which is why I give it four instead of five stars, but the park is beautiful and a peaceful place to camp. I wish I would have had my camera with me to take some pictures to share.

    Nine Eagles State Park Campground

    Overall nice park

Nice park, a little run down, but there's a new park ranger in town who is trying to fix it up. New rental cabin almost finished, clean beach, boat ramp and fishing. Clean spacious bathrooms, nice playground for the kids and a really cool equestrian section. No store, no wood so get what you need before you get here.

Equestrian Campground — Elk Rock State Park

    Busy

This is a really busy boat ramp but the campground is pretty big and open. The boat ramp is the closest one to mile long bridge. It also has a cleaning station and restroom available.

The campgrounds are very clean. There are lots of trails around the area.

It’s also a great place if you like to go horse back riding with lots of trails that go near the water.

There are camp hosts to help answer questions. There are also firewood bundles available to purchase for $4. The bathrooms and showers are very clean.

    Nine Eagles State Park Campground

    Big park. Lots of trails

This park is huge with a lot of trails most of which are not on a map and a map isnt provided out on them either so one just kind of has to make guesses on where to go. The electric campground is completely exposed to the sun. Nice right now but has to be brutal in the summer and the sites are right on top of one another as well. It is also a long ways from the beach as is the primitive campground. Horse campground is adorable but there are only primitive sites there which I always find so surprising. They have multiple trails leaving from there though which is cool. Firewood is sold in the small town a mile away and there is a very old cemetery right outside of the park which is cool to meander through. Bathrooms were closed but the water and electric were on and the price is very reasonable.

Equestrian Campground — Elk Rock State Park

    Nice hikes

We went in the chillier months so the park definitely was not at its most scenic as it probably usually is. The hikes throughout the woods were quite nice and eventually loop around at least the one we were on did). They have a ginormous and steep boat landing with a large parking lot. The water looked pretty nice, although is was quite low at the time. The best part about the trip was the eagles. We must have been there at just the right time, because lined all through the trees along the lakes edge were eagles upon eagles. I'd say we saw about 70 bald eagles perched in the tress. It was really a beautiful sight. Aside from the park, it's pretty close to pella, which is a nice historic Dutch town. Good food and bars there to check out! Would visit again, but when it's warmer!

    Nine Eagles State Park Campground

    A quiet getaway

We arrived on Thursday evening. After a short debate we opted to pay the extra money for an electric site - based solely on the fact that the water wasn't turned on in the basic site loop (we later discovered it was also off at the swimming beach).

At a guess the basic sites aren't used much as they seemed less kept than the electric sites. Finding a place to pitch a tent in the electric loop was a challenge but we did find one that had enough level grass. Site 4 - close to the water spigot and a modest walk to the bathroom/showerhouse.

Though it was definitely busier come Friday night not all the sites were full and most seemed to be retired or semi-so with grandkids. No party atmosphere - which is what we happened to be looking for this trip.

A nice, quiet place to spend a weekend away with Amish country store a close distance by.

What to do

Trail riding opportunities: Stephens State Forest Whitebreast Unit trails connect campers to wooded areas suitable for daily rides. The forest features multiple units with interconnected paths for riders of varying experience levels.

Swimming and fishing: Nine Eagles State Park Campground provides water recreation beyond trail rides. "Nice lake to swim and fish. Absolutely beautiful park and really nice trails," notes camper Tina T.

Explore nearby attractions: Madison County Fairground Campground serves as a convenient base for regional exploration. "Close to the Bridges, John Wayne sites, laundromat, and grocery stores," writes Richard R., highlighting access to Madison County's covered bridges and the John Wayne Birthplace Museum.

What campers like

Peaceful atmosphere: Many equestrian campers appreciate the tranquility at Elk Rock State Park. Bradley N. reports, "We stayed in the Elk Rock Equestrian campground and it was so peaceful and beautiful. The facilities were clean."

Wildlife viewing: Bird watching opportunities enhance the camping experience. "The best part about the trip was the eagles. We must have been there at just the right time, because lined all through the trees along the lakes edge were eagles upon eagles. I'd say we saw about 70 bald eagles perched in the trees," shares Jennifer M. about her experience at Elk Rock.

Well-maintained facilities: Double E LLC Camping provides private camping with electric hookups, water connections, and trash service. The site accommodates RVs with both 30 and 50-amp service for comfortable extended stays.

What you should know

Limited amenities at some sites: Not all campgrounds offer full services. At Stephens State Forest Lucas Unit, campers should prepare for primitive camping conditions despite having some hookups available.

Seasonal water access: Water availability varies by season at certain campgrounds. One Nine Eagles camper reported, "We arrived on Thursday evening. After a short debate we opted to pay the extra money for an electric site - based solely on the fact that the water wasn't turned on in the basic site loop."

Reservation requirements: Most equestrian campgrounds near Lucas require advance reservations, particularly during peak season from late spring through early fall. Sites with horse facilities fill quickly on weekends and holidays.

Tips for camping with families

Select campgrounds with play areas: Families benefit from campgrounds with designated recreation spaces. "Nice playground for the kids and a really cool equestrian section," notes Lauri C. about Nine Eagles State Park.

Check bathroom accessibility: Family camping requires convenient facilities. At Nine Eagles, the youth group campsite lacks immediate bathroom access. Matt S. explains, "There are not any bathroom facilities at the campsite which is why I give it four instead of five stars, but the park is beautiful and a peaceful place to camp."

Consider site layout: Look for level, grassy areas when tent camping with children. "Finding a place to pitch a tent in the electric loop was a challenge but we did find one that had enough level grass. Site 4 - close to the water spigot and a modest walk to the bathroom/showerhouse," advises Uhura G.

Tips from RVers

Long-term options available: For extended stays, some fairgrounds offer monthly rates. "Water, gas and Sewer was $15 daily, $105 weekly, and $420 monthly. Prices go up to $120 weekly when it gets cold," reports Richard R. about Madison County Fairground Campground.

Know fire restrictions: Several campgrounds prohibit ground fires. Madison County Fairground notes "No ground fires allowed," which affects cooking plans for RVers accustomed to campfire meals.

Site hookup verification: Confirm which utility connections are operational before arrival. Seasonal closures affect water systems at multiple campgrounds in the region, particularly during spring and late fall when freezing temperatures occur.
