    Johnny Appleseed Campground

    Looked like a ghost town

This small, well-kept Campground is a Fort Wayne city park surrounded by industrial & commercial businesses. The Park is clean with the most modern, clean shower/bath house I’ve seen. Unfortunately, the restroom is located across the street from the campground. The sites were occupied by large RVs but we only saw 2 people sitting outside - no campfires, no cooking, no campers. This was just an over night stopover for us so we didn’t care. I suppose this Campground is used by seasonal workers who just sleep & eat dinner there at the end of their workday. The Campground is never dark with streetlights and and the ambient light from surrounding businesses. I’m sure this campground serves a purpose, just not my purpose. This is definitely NOT a destination.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Pokagon State Park Campground

    One of Indiana's original parks.

Pokagon was one of the first Indiana state parks, so there's some history here! One of my favorite memories is the toboggan run, which FYI, is seasonal. It's a ton of fun for the whole family. Also, in the winter, there's sledding, ice fishing and cross country skiing. There's a few trails and swimming and boating in the lake in the summer. The campground is standard and has a bathhouse and fire pits at each site (both electric and non-electric). There's a nice Inn as well, if you need a non campgroud place to stay in the winter. It's a great easy trip, even from Chicago. So, come winter or summer!

    Potato Creek State Park Campground

Big, clean and plenty to do

The park itself is rather large, and the camping area is pretty expansive as well. Bathrooms are cleanish…but they start getting a little wild as the weekend wears on. Perpetual mud and slop from the showers, but functional. The sites are roomy enough but they are a little close together. Some sites are shaded, some are open…hard to tell when booking. Not many trees to set up a hammock on site. General store was well stocked and the staff across the board were very helpful.

    Potato Creek State Park Campground

1st time, will definitely be back.

Our first time here with our pop-up. It's a beautiful park. So much nature to explore, so we'll have to come back again. Note that my four star rating is based on five stars being perfection, so I would still definitely recommend it.

Our site was purposely located close to a bathhouse, but was not too close to have any bothersome noises. The bathhouse was a bit dated, but pretty clean. Individual stall showers with inner and outer curtains. Curtains could have been a bit longer, because the inner one allowed lots of spray into the outer "dry" part of the stall.

Great playground on the east side of the first loop. Kids seem to play there for hours and enjoy riding bikes around the loops. Very well manicured grounds, including paths from the sites to the bathhouse.

Nice little store that had a little bit of everything attendants were friendly. Firewood available. Cheaper outside the park, but don't mind supporting the park. Was open till 9PM even on Sunday.

Beach was small, but seems adequate for the number of people there. Could use a little sand cleaning, but not bad. Swimming area roped off to keep boats out. Bathrooms have showers.

    Already planning our next visit!

    Pokagon State Park Campground

    Pokagon State Park

Pokagon State Park has an excellent state park campground. Sites are in a well wooded area situated on 5 different loops (1 non-electric, 4 electric). Many sites are flat (good for tent camping) while others are slightly rolling hills (helps breakup the sites a bit). There is a lot to do in the park including many trails, horse riding (horse stable on site), and lake swimming on a nicely improved beach. Only cons are no full hook up and the fire rings/grills could be improved.

Former pick a spot now it's jt's lakeside campground I think

We have a blast!!!!! Bring your boat or watercraft! Plenty of lakefront camping spots on the barbie chain of lakes. Several (deep, clean) lakes hooked together by channels. Also hook into that big bass or musky!! It's crowded, pretty quiet usually, no showers or running water bathroom facilities. But the view...

Guide to Wolflake

Chain O'lakes State Park Dispersed Campsite offers primitive camping at $12 per site for tents. These sites include a fire ring, picnic table, and level ground for setting up camp. Electric hookup sites cost more but provide essential amenities for longer stays. Located in northeastern Indiana, the park features multiple connected lakes accessible by boat or kayak.

What to do

Mountain biking at Potato Creek State Park: The park features beginner-friendly mountain bike trails and paved bike paths suitable for all skill levels. A visitor noted, "Peppermint Hill mountain bike/hiking loop was really fun and not to be missed," while another camper mentioned that the park offers "hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, what more could you ask for."

Explore Amish country: Shipshewana Trading Place RV Park provides easy access to local Amish attractions. "This campground was very convenient to the town of Shipshewanna, Amish Country and the Pumpkinvine Bike Trail," shares one visitor who enjoyed "riding on the Pumpkinvine Bike Trail, the Krider Nurseries World's Fair Garden, the RV museum in Elkhart and Mooey's ice cream near Middlebury."

Lakeside activities: Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday sits on an all-sports lake with boat rentals and water recreation. "This place was fantastic... There are lakes all around and a playground for the kids," notes one camper. Another mentioned, "They have docks, pontoon rentals and a launch if you wish to bring your own boat."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Johnny Appleseed Campground near Fort Wayne stands out for its exceptionally maintained bathrooms. "They have the best bathrooms that I have ever seen in the campgrounds. You can even look out at the skylight at the sky while you take a shower," one camper enthused. Multiple reviews praise the "suppppppper bathrooms" and note they're "locked with a code and very clean."

Family-friendly amenities: Potato Creek State Park Campground receives high marks for its child-friendly features. "Our daughter loved the play area and huge grassy area to run around on," mentions one visitor. The park balances natural beauty with practical amenities, though some note "restrooms are a bit dated, but clean and functioning."

Quiet atmosphere: Campers consistently appreciate the peaceful environment at Bixler Lake Park & Campground. One long-term visitor shared, "Been here nearly a month and definitely will be back," while another noted it's "very nice and friendly atmosphere and very quiet place to relax and enjoy a long weekend."

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most glamping options near Wolflake, Indiana operate from April through October. Potato Creek State Park Campground remains open year-round, but Bixler Lake operates "last weekend April to October 15" and Pic-A-Spot runs "Apr 15 - Oct 15." Plan accordingly if visiting during shoulder seasons.

Site selection matters: At Ebys Pines, site location significantly impacts your experience. One camper advised, "RV Sites are stacked on each other. We chose 306 and it was ok by the pond... Our friends had 310 and there was barely room to put their awning out." Research specific site numbers before booking.

Extra fees: Be prepared for additional costs at some locations. A visitor to Ebys Pines noted they "charged visitors $5 per person per day. And charged $5 per device per day for WiFi" even during off-season when most amenities were closed.

Tips for camping with families

Choose the right campground section: At Potato Creek State Park Campground, one experienced camper recommends "securing a spot in the back sites 230-287 for larger lots and quieter atmosphere. Younger families tend to book up front near the playground and the noise and activities are more robust."

Pack for mosquitoes: Indiana's natural wetlands mean insects can be prevalent. A Potato Creek visitor warns, "Natural wetlands abound, so definitely bring the mosquito spray." This preparation can make or break a family camping trip, especially during summer months.

Entertainment options: Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney offers numerous family activities. As one visitor observed, the campground has "pool, miniature golf, volley ball, fishing pond, big chess set, bike rental, mining area, playground, and rec hall with video games, pool, ping pong, air hockey, and juke box."

Tips from RVers

Electrical hookup planning: At Potato Creek State Park Campground, electricity access can require planning. A regular visitor advises, "Be ready with back up cords, some sites require 75 ft to hook up," which is crucial information for RVers relying on power.

Travel time considerations: Access at larger parks can take longer than expected. One RVer noted about Potato Creek, "Takes 10-15 mins to drive out of campground, so keep this in mind" when planning day trips or supply runs to nearby South Bend.

Seasonal site options: For those interested in longer-term glamping in Wolflake, Indiana, Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday accommodates both transient and seasonal visitors. "The transient sites are near the US-20 road, to the north and easily accessible. I do not consider this to be an extremely loud road but there is large truck traffic day/night," notes one experienced local camper.
