    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

    Twin Mills Camping Resort

    Beautiful Wooded Campground

Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. We frequent this location when getting RV Repairs and visiting Elkhart, the birth place of most RVs.

There are cabins and tent sites and a large lake access point with a beach area. The playgrounds seemed to be in good shape and the dumpsters were centrally located.

The park has a gate entrance for security.

There is a large pool area and basketball court.

There are several sections in the park, some more wooded and narrow sites, some are more spread out.

Cellular: T-Mobile had good signal strength and bandwidth, AT&T was not as good but still doable.

Most of the sites are full hook up, some have 30amp and some have 50amp.

Amenities: Pool Clubhouse Basketball Volleyball Picnic tables Fire rings Trash Playground Lake access Beach area Dock Cabins Tent sites

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Great for families and group camping

If you're traveling with kids or enjoy the community of being near your fellow campers this is a great option. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat this may be a bit loud and busy. However, the many amenities are a great way to find peace with the 9 lakes, 12 trails and a beach for swimming. The lakes and connecting channels are stunning for canoes and kayaks and there is a convenient rental area. This is a campground of convenience with a very well stocked campground store with reasonable prices right next to the entrance. There is firewood and ice for sale as well as staple cooking items and cute souvenirs. The campsites are spacious and have a picnic table and fire pit at each. This campground is a great way to stay close to the fun and other campers. With so many options there is a something for everyone! Safe travels happy campers 😄

    Lake Hudson Recreation Area

Beautiful Nature, Dark Sky Rustic Camping

Lake Hudson is a dark sky preserve full of trees, nature and a beautiful lake. The camping sites come with an electric plug in, a nice fire ring and a picnic table. They are cute sites. Most are not by the lake. There is a dumpster. The facilities are rustic. The facilities are port a potty type with wooden walls and cement floor. No showers. A hand pump well for water. The swimming part of the lake requires a drive. The Lake is beautiful with a sand beach, no wake boating and grills. However it is rustic so there is goose poo. The woods are beautiful. There is hunting. We had heard that some people partied there but the night we were there it was quiet and people were respectful. We had a beautiful fire and dutch oven dinner. We saw one cute racoon who ran away when I reacted. We were worried about mosquitos but we only saw one.

    KOA Campground Middlebury

    Decent for a quick stop

Got us in last minute when our other plans fell through. Site was only $35 for a back in water/electric. Grateful for it but wouldn’t have booked this otherwise. Site was unlevel and ran into a hill on the back end. Not much space on ether side of us. Corner lot and the rec center and basketball court was directly behind. Kids cutting through the campsite all the time.

We called several times before anyone answered and the store was clearly understaffed. Although the staff was kind and doing their best. Picnic table is on its last legs and fire ring looked like it was run over. Overall it was a little shabby but definitely not bad. Good for a place to sleep but I wouldn’t book a week here. Not many restaurant options either and also no signs for this one on the highway.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Nice park for Northwest Ohio

We rented a yurt as a local weekend escape. Our kids loved the yurt. It was nice with a little mini fridge and 4 double beds. Campground showers and bathrooms are clean. It is one of the only state parks in northwest Ohio, a beautiful little spot nestled in farmland of Ohio. The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well. We did not use it, but there is a dog beach as well. Sites are crowed and close together.

Guide to Fremont

Cabin camping options near Fremont, Indiana cater to visitors in all seasons across Steuben County. The area sits within Indiana's lake country, with over 100 lakes within a 10-mile radius of Angola. Many campgrounds with cabins stay open from mid-April through early November, while select properties like Angola's Hogback Lake KOA Holiday maintain year-round cabin availability with winter heating systems.

What to do

Kayaking on connected waterways: Crooked Creek Campground and Cabins offers direct river access for extended paddling trips. "River access at this campground so you can kayak about 5 hours to the public access and drive back. Or you can also rent kayaks near the public access and they will transport for you," notes Fred F.

Winter tobogganing: Pokagon State Park Campground maintains cabin availability during winter months when their famous toboggan run operates. "There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc. Tons of picnic areas and pavilions; would be a great spot for a family reunion," shares Amy K.

Historical music venue exploration: Buck Lake Ranch combines cabin camping with music history dating back to 1947. "Buck Lake Ranch is full of history dating back to 1947. Hank Williams, Buddy Holly, Loretta Lynn, Waylon, Willie, Alabama, Charlie Daniels to name a few," explains Ron W. The property features a small Main Street area with photo opportunities and access to the lake for fishing.

What campers like

Clean, private bathrooms: Campers frequently mention bathroom facilities when reviewing cabin rentals near Fremont. "The bathrooms/showers were large and private (one occupant at a time)," notes Fred F. about Crooked Creek's facilities. This differs from standard campground bathhouses with multiple stalls.

Lake access for fishing: Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground provides cabin options with proximity to multiple connected lakes. "Between the hiking trails, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and biking. You won't ever get bored. The facility is clean and very safe," reports Amanda J.

Quiet atmosphere: Several cabin rental locations emphasize peaceful settings. "This is our normal spot for the summer. Clean restrooms, easy lake access, friendly vibes. Very quiet and laid back," says Dustin H. about Crooked Creek. Many cabins are situated away from main camping areas to provide additional privacy.

What you should know

Seasonal availability limitations: Most cabin rentals operate seasonally. "Campground off 120 between Orland and Fremont, on Lake Pleasant... Only downside is nightly rented camp spots are far from the shower house and play areas. It is very busy during the summer season like most campgrounds in the area," explains Chotsie S. about Manapogo Park.

Rustic vs. deluxe options: Cabin amenities vary significantly between properties. Some offer only basic shelter with beds, while others include kitchenettes and private bathrooms. "The site was perfect! We were only there for one night but it couldn't have been better! Even for primitive sites the bathroom facilities were great!" reports Stacy Z. about Buck Lake Ranch.

Reservation requirements: Many cabin rentals require advance booking, especially during peak season. Campgrounds like E-Z Camp operate from April through November with limited cabin availability. Some properties may have disconnected phones or require online booking, as Mark C. noted: "Phone is disconnected."

Tips for camping with families

Look for dedicated children's activities: Gateway Park Campground offers numerous structured activities for children. "They have a lot for the kids here: Pool 3ft-5ft, Air pillow, Large playground (very clean), Half basketball court, Sand Volleyball net, Rec room (small amount of games), Crafts on weekends," details Melissa M.

Consider weekend programming: Some cabin rental locations offer weekend-specific activities. "Great place for family, lots of amenities," notes Bradley P. about Pokagon State Park, which provides naturalist programs and seasonal activities throughout the year.

Evaluate swimming options: Not all lakes permit swimming or have designated beach areas. "Kayaking and the beach was a huge hit with the kids," Jeremy C. mentions about Chain O' Lakes State Park, which maintains a supervised swimming beach during summer months.

Tips from RVers

Look for multi-function sites: Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday features both RV sites and cabin rentals with similar amenities. "Watch out for some of the patio sites, some have a fire pit that would sit directly under an awning. Our patio site though had the pit far out from site and we loved it, the grill even had propane in it to use!" advises Ashley G.

Consider highway noise factors: Some cabin locations experience road noise that might affect light sleepers. "Highway noise was terrible. So many open spaces and we're assigned a highway space. They obviously cater to seasonal campers. Find another place if you're on the move," warns Michael G. about Hogback Lake KOA. Request cabin locations away from major roads when possible.

Check for late arrival procedures: Many cabin rental offices close early. "We arrived late to find an envelope with our name on it with all of our info inside.. the site was perfect with everything we would need already there.. chairs, table, and even a propane grill!" reports Marshall T. about Hogback Lake KOA's after-hours check-in process.
