Best RV Parks & Resorts near Wilmette, IL

Several RV parks operate near Wilmette, Illinois with varying amenities and site configurations. Camp Reinberg in Palatine provides five RV sites with 50-amp electric hookups, two of which feature paved concrete pads while the others have gravel surfaces. NAVSTA Great Lakes RV Campground offers lakefront camping with concrete pads and electric hookups but lacks sewer connections at individual sites. Just west in Palatine, Camp Reinberg features spacious sites within Cook County Forest Preserve with convenient access to Chicago via nearby Metra stations. Camp Bullfrog Lake provides RV camping with electric hookups and picturesque lake views. "The lots are huge compared to other campgrounds we have been to. They have a nice gravel spot for you to park your RV or other vehicle on."

Water access varies significantly between parks, with some offering water connections at individual sites while others require campers to fill tanks at central spigots. The Cook County Forest Preserve District campgrounds (Bullfrog Lake, Reinberg, Sullivan) operate reservation systems with defined seasonal availability and security gates that close nightly at 10 pm. Between May and September, weekend availability becomes extremely limited, particularly at lakefront locations. Most parks accommodate pets but enforce leash requirements. Dump stations are available at Camp Reinberg, though some parks like NAVSTA Great Lakes require driving approximately one mile to reach dumping facilities. Cell service remains generally strong throughout the region due to proximity to Chicago, though Camp Sullivan visitors reported spotty T-Mobile coverage. Big rigs should verify site dimensions before booking, as several reviews mentioned tight spacing at certain facilities.

    Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

    Clean & Spacious

We pulled in around 4:30 in the evening. The sight was spacious with plenty of room in between sites. Since the weather was cooler , it was pretty sparse with other campers. We stayed 2 nights over the weekend. You are within walking distance to the beach within the park. The buildings have great architecture. The sight had 50 amp electric hook ups but no water or sewer connections, and we knew that going in. We had a back in sight #69. There was plenty of space on all sides. We have a 37’ motorhome and pulled a Jeep behind it. There was plenty of room to maneuver around. The sight also had a wood picnic table and fire ring for a wood fire pit. We will definitely be back! I wish I had taken more photos from the beach and beach pavilion.

Big Foot Beach State Park Campground

nice state park with big sites and small beach

Nice large sites. gravel spot for arc/trailer. fire pit and picnic table. trails for hiking are nice, but the overall camping area isn’t very big. 100 sites only. 30 with electric. this was the first time all season that the bugs Annoyed us. the beach is about 10 feet of sand off a busy road and is not pet friendly. nice spot to stay if you want to avoid paying lake Geneva prices for a room.

    Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

Nice layout and a ton of nature activities

The state park is located within the boundaries of the Indiana Dunes National Park (formerly National Lakeshore), so don't get confused by this. There also is a national park campground, but it's closed in the winter.)

This state park has a nice layout because the sites seem to be staggered so that they don't back up to each other. Also, there is a good buffer space behind the sites and decent space between each site.

All sites have 20- 30- and 50-amp service available, plus almost all are a combination of a concrete pad and asphalt apron. Note that just because they're paved doesn't mean all of them are level. Each site has a fire pit and it appeared they all have grill grates on them.

One nice touch is that some sites have wider asphalt aprons so if you have a longer rig, you can put your towing vehicle or your towed vehicle off to the side once your rig is in place. Also, the ADA sites are nicely laid out with larger concrete pads so that even the fire pits are in the concrete section for ease of access.

Note that after Nov. 1, the water is shut off and bathrooms are shut down until spring, although there are vault toilets available.

You will hear a pretty regular stream of train whistles at this campground, but they aren't so loud as to be disruptive.

You can hike to the 1929 Dunes Pavilion and a large beach on Lake Michigan. The best hiking activity, however, and also easily accessible by walking from the campground, is the series of dune trails. The Nature Center, which sits between the campground and the trails, has some good visitor's information about the dunes, the flora and fauna, and the history of the area.

Once you finish seeing what you want in the state park, there's still the entire national park to see. Plus, there's a multi-use trail that runs for 9 miles along the state park and into the national park.

Cell service for Verizon was two bars but speeds seem to be good. Less signal and speed for Google Fi, but not terrible.

    Happy Acres Kampground

    Great for families

Staff was polite and helpful. They escort you to your spot. They hand out activity sheets for the weekend. Petting zoo, camp store, pool, lake/pond for swimming and fishing. Cell signal for ATT just one bar. No internet. Lots of full time residents. Lots of activities for kids. Pet friendly. They charge extra if you have visitors.

    Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

    Close by taste of nature

This is actually our second visit here. It’s only 20 minutes from our home, so we expect to come back many times. It’s a unique location about .5 miles from the actual beach and there’s a path/boardwalk that takes you right there. This is one of the few state parks that has a year-round heated bathroom with shower, so even with our popup camper we were able to take advantage of the decent weather for our first trip of the year. Sites are decent sized and have asphalt driveways with concrete pads. Sites are electric only, but there’s several water fills, even in winter. Very popular campground so you do have to book well in advance during regular season. Be aware that because it shares an entrance to the state park beach, entering on a summer Saturday or summer Sunday can take upwards of 45 minutes or more.

    Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort

    Felt like a trailer park

A pull through style RV park. Great if you have a toy hauler style camper, but if you're used to boondocking/ dispersed camping. Very very few spots with shade and trees. Felt like a trailer park not camping.

    NAVSTA Great Lakes RV Campground

    Short stop

It was a small RV park had a concert pad but not big enough for a 43 ft motor home. The site was 60 ft, but the whole site was not concrete. We were there for one night, it rained and the whole site had puddles around it. I do understand that it is a RV site but we stayed at others that were not concrete pad and did not flood this much. It was extremely muddy. Water was very. None of the sites had sewage, the dump station was about a mile down the road. They have a few 50 amp lots. We did not have one. The site had I would call it an out house. I did not see a bath house with showers. The out house only had a toilet, no sink for hand washing. The location was right on the water so that was nice. Other than that I was not impressed.

Big Foot Beach State Park Campground

    Surprising secret camp ground

We love private campsites, far enough away from other campers, yet close enough to amenities. We chose a walk in site #16 which was nice but I wish we chose one a bit further in. Bathrooms where very clean. Trails are great. Pet friendly - we brought our small, quiet dogs. Dog friendly restaurant right next to the camp site.

Guide to Wilmette

RV camping near Wilmette, Illinois offers options ranging from lakefront facilities to wooded forest preserve sites within driving distance of Chicago. Located along Lake Michigan's western shore, Wilmette sits at approximately 620 feet elevation in a temperate climate zone with four distinct seasons. Summer humidity levels typically reach 70-80%, creating conditions where evening campfires may be especially welcome after hot July and August days.

What to do

Trail exploration: Camp Reinberg provides direct access to miles of hiking and biking paths. "The trails through the grounds are varied and long--you can find something to suit just about any preference for suburban midwest hiking. There are plenty of paved trails as well as dirt, lots of fun little off-shoots into the woods, creeks run throughout," notes reviewer Kristy G.

Water activities: Camp Bullfrog Lake offers fishing and kayak rentals for $15/hour including life vests. "The kayaks are $15 and hour and include life vests. The lake is pretty small but it was fun to putter around," shares Layla P., adding that the lake provides a peaceful setting despite its modest size.

Wildlife viewing: Nearby preserves host diverse bird and animal populations. "We hiked 10 miles and saw tons of animals and birds including a snake, loads of herons and songbirds, deer, a raccoon and a Cooper's Hawk," reports Hatie P. about the wildlife visible from Bullfrog Lake trails.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort maintains well-kept bathroom facilities. "Clean campsite, clean showers & bathrooms!" wrote Jeana K., while another visitor mentioned "free ice, free coffee, and juice, and donut in the morning" among the amenities.

Convenient location: Many campgrounds offer proximity to urban amenities while maintaining natural surroundings. "This is a ideal getaway place for Chi-town people," states Yang L. about Camp Reinberg, mentioning its accessibility just minutes from Chicago suburbs.

Mountain biking opportunities: Sycamore RV Resort and surrounding area trails attract serious cyclists. "The mountain bike trails were awesome. If you're a trail rider, you must stay here. The lack of shade won't matter because you'll be riding all day. There are miles and miles of trails," according to Tim K.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. "We've camped here a few times and it is always a great experience. Each site comes with a free bundle of oak firewood which is nice to use on the fire pits," mentions Josh M. about Camp Bullfrog Lake, highlighting a valuable amenity.

Variable site conditions: Site quality and placement differ significantly between parks. "Sites # 4 and 5 probably have the longest length parking pad. I believe this is a relatively newer campground. There is NO shade during the day. None at all due to the trees within the campground being small," warns a reviewer about certain areas.

Security features: Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort maintains active security measures. "There is patroling at all hours for security. The laundry machines are great the dryers ore good. The dog park is clean and secure. The lake is natural and kept free of litter and garbage," reports ron R., though noting "The pot roads need service as thay do have a lot of pot holes."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature dedicated children's areas. "The new pool, the game room, the playground, the beautiful new bath house and the grounds are just wonderful," shares Gina H. about Fox Bluff CottageS & RV.

Swimming opportunities: Many parks provide beach access for cooling off during summer months. "Two lakes, catch and release fishing. A small beach with a snack shack. Well run and maintained," describes Deb M. at Sycamore RV Resort.

Noise considerations: Family campers should be aware of variable noise levels. "It did get a little noisy at night but that sometimes happens," reports geoff about Camp Bullfrog Lake, while another campground review noted "I believe they were humbling train all night long."

Tips from RVers

Water access challenges: Camp Reinberg requires staff assistance for water connections. "There are no water spigots at the RV sites. The staff has to hook up a very very long hose and will bring it to your site. You can get water, it's just an inconvenience for you and them," explains The School for Y.

Site dimensions: RV campers should verify exact dimensions before booking. "The lots are huge compared to other campgrounds we have been to. They have a nice gravel spot for you to park your RV or other vehicle on," notes a reviewer, though another campground received criticism: "Because of being right on top of other campers. Also, almost everything is gravel."

Seasonal availability: Some facilities restrict water services during colder months. "No water before 4/15," warns David N. about Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort, indicating seasonal limitations campers should prepare for.
