Tin Cup RV Park in Mahomet allows pets in both tent and RV sites with nearby access to Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve. Located just minutes from I-74, this RV park primarily serves as an overnight stopover for travelers with pets, featuring full hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. The grounds include a driving range with campsites interspersed throughout the property. Pets must remain leashed at all times while on the property. D & W Lake RV Park, another pet-friendly option near Mahomet, provides a fenced dog run area where pets can exercise off-leash. Sites are spacious with plenty of room between campers, offering shade trees and level parking areas for RVs up to 50 feet in length.
Champaign Sportsmen's Club Campground allows pets year-round with water and electric hookups but limited amenities for dog owners. Nearby Clinton Lake State Recreation Area offers more extensive pet-friendly facilities including hiking trails where leashed dogs can explore the shoreline and wooded paths. Prairie Pines Campground in Rantoul, about 20 minutes from Mahomet, provides full-hookup sites with good spacing between campsites and several small playgrounds scattered throughout the grounds where leashed pets are welcome. The extensive grass coverage at Prairie Pines gives pets comfortable walking areas, and the grounds are meticulously maintained for cleanliness. Most campgrounds in the area enforce standard pet policies requiring current vaccinations, immediate waste cleanup, and dogs to be supervised at all times.

This campground has a dog park and beautiful views, but the sites are very crowded. There are full hook up sites and electric only. If you like the party atmosphere, this place is for you. If you like a more spread out and quiet park, look at Lithia Springs or Opossum. Your park pass from any COE campground will get you in.
Photos view from dog park.
Pulled in about 7pm and immediately was greeted by the manager who showed us to our site, helped us pull in get settled and brought us firewood. The lake behind our trailer is beautiful and can be fished Catch and Release with Blue Gill and Bass. There's plenty of grass, Fire Pits, Playgrounds and a Dog Park. Wonderful campground and only about 10 min from downtown.
Giving this 4 stars for the awesomeness of the sites themselves. We were in 121. All of the sites we saw in our “loop” were super wide, all gravel and quite level. So well kept.....fire pit with grate, large picnic table....really, the site couldn’t have been better. Beautiful views of the lake! Just all-in-all a well maintained park. So, why not 5 stars? I really wanted good shore fishing and not only was it a long walk, but really not very good/easy to get to, or comfortable standing once you get there. Beautiful dog parks....one for large dogs and one for small, but again, a long walk from the campground. Not feasible for our older dog. One other thing, absolutely no lighting at night along the campground roadways. After dark, we watched a truck go into the ditch looking for the turn out (granted, the occupants sounded like they were well into partying), but the pitch darkness at night made it feel a little unsafe, especially walking the dog after dark. Still, the sites themselves are awesome.
We stayed at Boo Wood Campground for about five days and enjoyed much of their amenities.
The campground featured a dog park which provided room for our dogs to run around. There was also multiple playgrounds and even a small amphitheater. There was a large boat ramp with ample parking. We put in our kayaks on the boat ramp and enjoyed a nice paddle on a portion of the Shelbyville Lake.
We paid less than$25 a night for full hooks up and we had an almost lake view.
Our biggest issue with this campsite was the extensive bugs, once the sun goes down the bugs get horribly bad. We let our dogs out past 8 p.m. and our camper was covered with swarms of psychodidae(sewer) flies. Once we quickly got in our camper, we spent the next hour killing the swarms of sewer flies that entered our camper. We learned our lesson and once the sun went down, we did not leave our camper.
For my Tent only camp site. I loved it. It’s spacious it’s for the most part shaded. It is right next to the lake. I get some views. In the pictures I posted you’ll see what I’m talking about. As far as the campground I did take a drive around it’s pretty big n has a lot of shaded sites. I think it’s over 140 sites. There is a boat ramp on the grounds also the playground there’s a dog park there is also a little amphitheater. I believe I was told the Rangers do events for the kids. I do like the fact that you can go into a bathroom and it also has the shower so you have that privacy. I also noticed and was told that there are volunteers that are in the campground I guess all season. It seems like they’re spread out like there’s someone in every section. Which made me feel good. Having someone with the inside access to get help or to have a problem solved sooner than later. Here are just a couple reasons why I did not give a five star. To you out there it may not be a negative for you so you could see this as a five star. For a beautiful campsite to be surrounded by a lake. You can’t really see or Have access to swim in. There is a beach for the lake but it’s outside the campground and down the road. It’s a negative for me. I mean keep the trees maybe get rid of any low hanging branches and the bushes that block most of the view. I really wish they had some air in the bathrooms. Half of my trip was in the high 90s and the sun was just beaming on the building. So it was not pleasurable to use the bathroom or take a shower then. The tent only site that I was at. You had to park your car in a parking lot across the street but from my site it was down a little further.. I like having my car close by so I can access anything that is left in my car throughout my stay. wi-Fi would’ve been a plus. So I got good phone service. Att
Let me begin by saying that I scored this Love's RV Stop as high as I did not because it is my ideal camping spot - it isn't - and I don't think anyone looks for a spot to camp out on next to a super busy highway next to a commercial big rig gas station, but if you are doing some heavy duty highway traveling with your RV or 5th wheel and simply need a place to hold up for the night, then this place really is pretty amazing. With that in mind, hopefully you'll pay this place a visit, stop, get fueled up, rest for the night and enjoy the convenience and easy on- and off-access that this place provides. With this in mind …
This spot is brand spanking new, incredibly flat and offers up all the flat poured concrete where you want it and freshly poured gravel where you drive and all the other parts are surrounded by freshly sodded grass that has already grown in to near maturity everywhere else. Conveniently located on the highway axis where I39 / US51 meets I55, here in central Illinois in the city of Bloomington, Love’s RV Stop is an incredibly convenient and easy access spot to drop your RV anchor for the night. Extra points to Love’s RV Stop for providing gated key-pad entry and 24 hour CCTV security delivering a real feeling of safety throughout your roadside RV or 5th Wheel stay.
The convenient app-managed reservation system is seamless and provides for an incredibly simple, remote check-in and payment process. You’ll find back-in or pull-through as well as ADA accessible sites with full hook-ups with water, sewer and choice of either 30 or 50 amp electrical at every site. At the main kiosk where you’ll check-in, there’s a brand new spartan clean single person shower facility as well as individual men and women’s restrooms in addition to a coin-operated laundry facility. Additionally, the property has 2 covered pavilions with picnic tables and gas-powered BBQ grills, community firepit that can easily seat a dozen people, 2 pickleball courts, kid’s playground and a dog park with real grass for the pups to do their business on. Now granted, you'll be enjoying all of these amenities right next to all of the swooshing highway traffic, but surprisingly, we all got over this very quickly!
Because Love’s RV Stop is connected and managed by the neighboring Love’s Truck Stop, you’ll have nearby access to their full convenience store, as well as ATMs, Bojangles Restaurant (mediocre BBQ at best), as well as additional shower facilities along with, but of course, all the gas you can pump by the gallon. But if it’s something simple like firewood, ice, sundries or snacks, you can get these items back at the Kiosk and there are 2 soda vending machines as well as an ice machine behind this small building as well.
Insider’s tips? Here’s a few: (1) As you are literally on the corner of one of the busiest highway intersections in the entire Land ‘O Lincoln, there is no escaping where you are at, no matter how high they build the fence or how many bushes and trees they place between you and the 8-lanes of rushing passerby traffic and there’s not a single site here to escape the noise, so bring your earbuds if it bothers you or crank up some Van Halen;(2) If you are looking for something more than the stale coffee or the Bojangle’s food they are serving up at the truck stop, there are endless chain options like Starbucks, Dunkin’, Moe’s Southwest Grill nearby as well as further afield; (3) If you want my top recommendations for restaurants that are worth the drive, try out Giordano’s for Chicago deep dish pizza or Portillo’s for their Italian beef & sausage sandwich (don't ask, just order and send me your thanks later); and (4) If you are looking for something to do with the kiddos, head on over to Miller Park Zoo for the wild animals, performances and mini-golf or try out Grady’s Family Fun Park, which is an amusement park with rides and games.
While scoring criteria may vary from one person to the next, here are the 5 most important criteria that informed my rating of this overnight location: convenience (EZ on- and off-access), safety & security, quality (of facilities), peace & quiet and amenities (either on-site or nearby). Here’s how I ranked this particular overnight spot:
Convenience: 5
Safety & Security: 5
Quality: 5
Peace& Quiet: 4
Amenities: 5
Overall, I scored this location a 5.
Happy Overnighting!
Super nice owners of this driving range with campsites. It's extremely close to the popular Lake of the Woods Forest preserve. We've camped here in tents with no problems, but it is mainly for RV stop overs from I74. It is a close drive or walk to hiking, or small town amenities like Filippo's family owned Sicilian pizza (excellent) or a little further to Casey's gas station. A 2 minute car ride to more restaurants downtown Mahomet, a grocery store, and Dollar General.
Super easy on and off the highway. With that you do get some noise but not too bad.
Office staff is very friendly and efficient. Full hookup sites. Wifi is available. Playground and dogrun for the pets.
The pond is 1/2 mile walk around. Bathrooms we clean.
If you need to get off the road and get some rest give them a try. Just north of town and you will be back on the road in no time.
Mahomet sits near the Sangamon River in east-central Illinois, at an elevation of about 710 feet. The area's gently rolling terrain features a mix of woodlands and prairie landscapes, with summer temperatures typically ranging from 70-90°F. Camping options in the region offer various water access points, from small creeks to larger lakes, with most sites providing at least partial shade coverage.
Fishing the warm waters: Clinton Lake State Recreation Area offers unusually warm waters due to discharge from a nearby nuclear plant, making it excellent for fishing year-round. "Clinton Lake is a boating destination as the waters are unusually warm due to the discharge from the nearby nuclear plant. There are several different loops within the campground, some are alcohol free and others have direct access to the lake," notes Stacia R. The lake is stocked with bluegill and bass.
Walking trails: Friends Creek Campground features mowed paths through conservation areas with diverse terrain. "Start at the one room schoolhouse and make your way down wide trails. They aren't that long but take a few and they add up. Stay on the camp side of the road and you can find large grassy areas with playgrounds and picnic shelters," explains Art S. The historic schoolhouse offers guided tours by appointment.
Water activities: Weldon Springs State Park Campground provides boat rentals and swimming options during summer months. "A WWII memorial is found along the pond and there are also boat rentals and plenty of good fishing spots," shares Jamie G. The park features concrete fire rings and picnic tables at most sites with several playgrounds available.
Privacy options: Moraine View State Recreational Area offers various camping areas with different privacy levels. "The dispersed camping sites were the closest to what I'd been used to coming from New Hampshire, but it was more of a hike than I would be looking for," explains Ryan M. The park features both electric sites along the water and more primitive options in wooded areas.
Clean facilities: Gibson City South Park Municipal Campground maintains well-kept restroom facilities despite its small size. "Great campsite," confirms Kaleb S. The campground charges just $10 per night and is located next to a city park, making it one of the most affordable options near Mahomet.
Level sites: Prairie Pines Campground offers well-maintained level sites with full hookups. "Large sites with full hook ups, picnic table and scattered large trees near an Air Force base. Large very clean bathhouse. Several small playgrounds and swingsets scattered about," reports Jennifer B. The grounds are consistently maintained with good spacing between sites.
Pet policies: Most dog friendly campgrounds near Mahomet enforce standard pet rules including leashing requirements. While the existing description covers Tin Cup RV Park and D & W Lake RV Park's pet policies, other campgrounds like Kickapoo State Recreation Area also accommodate pets. "Deer and wildlife seen in the mornings. Really nice way to get off the grid for a second without having to go too far," mentions Cassandra I. about the primitive non-electric sites.
Reservation requirements: Some campgrounds fill quickly during peak seasons. At D & W Lake RV Park, "Check-in was easy, we were pre-paid, we were taken directly to our pull-thru site. Stayed only 1 night, had planned 2 but had issues had to call and cancel 1 night," explains Ricky L. Their staff typically escort guests directly to sites upon arrival.
Alcohol restrictions: Several campgrounds near Mahomet have strict alcohol policies. At Moraine View, "No alcohol" signs are posted and should be taken seriously. Similarly, at Weldon Springs, "There is a STRICT no alcohol rule in the tent sites. A sign said coolers are subject to inspection," notes Priscilla J.
Playground access: Multiple pet-friendly campgrounds near Mahomet feature playground equipment for children. "There are camp sites that are walk to for some more distance from others, a lot of close drive to spots, RV, and a lot of close boat camping sites. The park itself has a lot of trails to explore and a few lakes to fish at," shares Jennifer S. about Kickapoo State Recreation Area.
Beach options: Clinton Lake State Recreation Area offers swimming opportunities with designated beach areas. "We stayed in the J loop, which was more family friendly and very close to the beach. There was a walking path from our site to the shore which was perfect for our young family to go back and forth on," explains Linda N. Entrance to the beach costs $3 per person during operating hours of 10am-7pm.
Wildlife viewing: Friends Creek Campground provides nature observation opportunities in a quieter setting. "This hidden gem of a campground is very quiet and serene - surrounded by tall trees and next to a tall grass prairie conservation area - complete with historic schoolhouse, mowed trails to a nearby creek, gentle rolling hills, trees, birds & wildlife and a small bridge," describes Kate O.
Full hookup options: For those needing complete services, D & W Lake RV Park provides full hookups with easy highway access. "Super easy on and off the highway. With that you do get some noise but not too bad. Office staff is very friendly and efficient. Full hookup sites. Wifi is available. Playground and dogrun for the pets," shares Charles M. The campground is particularly popular with travelers needing a quick overnight stop when traveling along I-57 or I-74.
Budget camping: Gibson City offers basic but affordable RV camping with good amenities for the price. "10$ a night next to a park on a slightly busy street. I pitched my tent amongst the many rv trailers and had a rest on my motorcycle trip south. Not ideal for camping but a great budget option if your tired," notes Eric P. The park requires registration at the police station located a few blocks away.
