Best Campgrounds near Mahomet, IL

Camping options around Mahomet, Illinois include several established campgrounds within easy driving distance of this central Illinois community. The region features a mix of state recreation areas and privately operated RV parks, including Tin Cup RV Park within Mahomet itself and the nearby Clinton Lake State Recreation Area. Most facilities accommodate both tent and RV camping, with some sites like D & W Lake RV Park in neighboring Champaign also offering glamping options. The surrounding prairie landscape provides a flat, accessible camping environment with several water features including small lakes and reservoirs.

Reservations are recommended at most developed campgrounds in the area, particularly during summer weekends and holidays. Many facilities operate year-round, though services may be reduced during winter months. Most campgrounds offer electric hookups for RVs, with water and sewer connections available at select locations. The relatively flat terrain makes most sites accessible without specialized vehicles, and campground roads are generally well-maintained. Weather considerations include hot, humid summers and potentially severe thunderstorms. As one camper noted about Friends Creek Campground, "This hidden gem of a campground is very quiet and serene - surrounded by tall trees and next to a tall grass prairie conservation area - complete with historic schoolhouse, mowed trails to a nearby creek, gentle rolling hills, trees, birds & wildlife and a small bridge."

Waterfront access represents a significant draw for campers in the region, with several locations situated near lakes or small waterways. Clinton Lake State Recreation Area provides boat access camping and fishing opportunities, while D & W Lake RV Park includes fishing as part of its name and appeal. Campgrounds typically feature standard amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, and access to restroom facilities, with many also offering showers. Campers frequently mention the well-maintained grounds and clean facilities. According to one visitor at Comlara County Park, "Evergreen Lake is the perfect back drop to the campground. Although we don't fish, we saw many people fishing from the shore line and enjoying the water in boats and canoes." While sites at many campgrounds are spaced relatively close together, the surrounding natural areas often provide opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and outdoor recreation.

    Love's RV Stop-Normal IL 867

A trickster with premium luxury pricing.

We decided to not stay here. We stopped, did the online reservation (Loves now uses Camplife website). Made the reservation for a single night and it's $70+ tax and fees.  We paid less per night at luxury campgrounds with waterparks and entertainment. This is a truck stop. Needless to say, we won't be using Love's anymore for our single night stays when traveling.

    Friends Creek Campground

    Great campground

Very nice small campground with well spaced sites. The bathrooms were very clean. The Macon County website is a bit wonky to navigate. The camp host is a jewel. Be aware that there are 50 amp sites and 30 amp sites. The 50 amp sites are more expensive. Would definitely return.

Gibson City South Park Municipal Campground

    Wonderful spot

This is a great city run campground attached to a block sized city park. 30 amp and water at each site. The park has restrooms, with showers. You only need to grab a key from the police department. There is a dump station on site and large dumpster. Supermarket, restaurants and gas station with in a few blocks. An active American Legion post/bar just down main street. All for $10 a night.

    D & W Lake RV Park

    Lovely hideway

Very nice looking campground. When we drove in, 1st impression, it gave off a "Welcome" feel. Check-in was easy, we were pre-paid, we were taken directly to our pull-thru site. Stayed only 1 night, had planned 2 but had issues had to call and cancel 1 night. Sites level, plenty of space between campers, shade trees, loved the dog run too. Overall it was a very nice well kept campground. I'm glad we made a reservation. We enjoyed our stay.

    Kickapoo State Recreation Area

    A real gem

There has been some confusion on the app—for clarity—this campground is not free, but don’t let that stop you! We paid only $20 for our one night stay. Big, beautiful and well maintained. We had electricity, free showers, topped off our water tank. It’s a great deal. Gorgeous trees, big pull thru site—top notch!

    D & W Lake RV Park

    Peaceful Evening With Gorgeous Lake

Pulled in about 7pm and immediately was greeted by the manager who showed us to our site, helped us pull in get settled and brought us firewood. The lake behind our trailer is beautiful and can be fished Catch and Release with Blue Gill and Bass. There's plenty of grass, Fire Pits, Playgrounds and a Dog Park. Wonderful campground and only about 10 min from downtown.
