This place has a great location

The bathrooms here were heated and sparkling clean. Our Starlink had zero obstructions worked lightening fast. We LOVED having a dog park to exercise our dogs daily!

Great location, close to all the Springfield attractions and Slauterhaus Brewing in Auburn, IL (this is the best brewery nearby, better than Buzz Bomb or Obed & Issacs in town!).

Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park

Close to downtown, view of the arch, lots of trains

$70 per night, plus $20 pet fee and $5 reservation fee. Stayed two nights passing through to visit Gateway Arch National Park. Casino is pretty old looking on the outside. Park is not staffed, you get a gate code in your email to access the park. Spots are concrete and gravel, very urban camping. There are trains every 15-30 minutes all day long. Casino has a metro stop that takes you into St Louis over the river. First time paying a pet fee for a overnight stay. Not very busy in November, maybe 25% of spots full in the half of the park that is open. Utilities are set up weird on all sites - Water and electric are at the very rear of the site by the sewer, so you will need a decent sized hose to reach if your water intake is in the front of your camper.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Country Bend Campground provides multiple stocked ponds where campers can enjoy catch-and-release fishing. "Plenty of lakes/ponds to fish. We couldn't boat while there due to COVID but look forward to going back and taking our kayaks," noted camper Sherry W.

Walking trails: Beaver Dam State Park Campground offers scenic trails with small bridges and water access points. According to reviewer Shelly S., "The trail goes all the way around the lake with several fishing spots. Theres a boat ramp near the parking area and several docks to use across the lake."

Swimming pool access: Several campgrounds maintain on-site pools for guests during summer months. As Peggy H. noted about Country Bend, "We stayed there July 4th weekend we had a great time. Everyone was friendly they had many activities plus a swimming pool, putt putt golf, paddle boats and fishing."

Mini golf courses: Family-friendly recreation includes maintained putt-putt courses at select locations. "Big things happening at Country Bend Campgrounds in Montrgromy Co, IL. This beautiful campground has many things to offer... It has a pool, swing sets, playground, cabins, ponds with stocked fish, beautiful walking trails, camping, welcome center, baseball field, volleyball, games, horseshoes, paddle boats, miniature golf," shared camper Tara L.

What campers like

Spacious sites with privacy: Sherwood Forest campground offers well-spaced sites with natural separation. Camper Jeff B. appreciated that "Our site is very large with an equally large grass lawn area," while describing it as "an amazing little resort-like campground. It's nicely tucked away with plenty of shade."

Clean facilities: Maintaining high standards for bathroom and shower facilities ranks high with visitors. As one camper stated about Illini Campground, "The shower houses are clean and air conditioned, there's a nice camp store that serves breakfast and basic lunches."

Friendly staff and hosts: Okaw Valley Kampground receives consistent praise for helpful management. One cross-country cyclist noted, "The owners stored our bikes, watched our tent, and even picked us up from the hospital! Such nice people! The campground is clean, has a great showerhouse, lots of trees, and even has recliners in the laundry room."

Seasonal activities: Campgrounds often schedule events during peak seasons. At Country Bend, Kaitlin D. experienced "Holiday weekends have so many planned activities, some for all ages. We really loved the bridges with trails to ponds, and the jumping pillow."

What you should know

Site conditions vary seasonally: Spring camping may require preparation for mud or standing water. Andrea S. warned about Country Bend: "The sites are sunk down, poorly rocked and extremely narrow. The majority of sites are backup only, which is a recipe for disaster with all of the rain central Illinois has had this Spring. Be prepared for mud and standing water."

Reservation requirements: Double J Campground and other locations can fill quickly during peak times. One camper noted, "The campground filled up by 11am on Friday, which was a surprise to us. We lucked out and were able to reserve one of the last spots."

Water access considerations: Not all sites offer direct hookups. At Illini Campground, visitors reported "Only complaint that I have was the potable water supply. I filled by trailer's tank at the drinking water supply when you enter the campground. It was extremely dirty with a lot of copper colored solids."

Big rig limitations: Larger vehicles face challenges at some campgrounds. As Liz G. shared about Country Bend, "Our motorhome is a big rig a 42 foot diesel pusher... We were put in a spot not large enough for our vehicle. Not much gravel all mud. Due to a huge tree no satellite service yet the owners stated was good for our 42 ft diesel pusher motorhome and no obstacles."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Rustic Acres Jellystone offers extensive children's recreation areas. One parent shared, "Nice, Family Friendly Campground. The campsites are small and a bit pricey, but it is a great family friendly place. Good pizza and amazing ice cream at the store! Kid fun and themed activities, bounce trampoline pillow, pool, etc."

Organized activities: Structured programs provide entertainment for various age groups. According to Kate T., Country Bend Campground offers a "Family friendly atmosphere, big inground pool, 18 hole putt putt, lots of outdoor games, planned activities on the weekends, shaded sites, and air conditioned cabins!"

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Local parks offer chances to observe deer and other animals. Chelsea D. noted that at Illini Campground, "lots of deer bed down in the grassy areas at night, which was a fun thing to see!"

Safety considerations: When camping with children, note facility distances. One parent cautioned about certain locations: "Unless you have a restroom in your rig, be prepared to walk up to the showerhouse. The pit toilets that were spread across the campground were in horrendous condition."

Tips from RVers

Pull-through site availability: Kamper Kompanion RV Park receives positive reviews for its access design. Jessica T. noted it's "Easy on off, right by highway, pulled in after dark and they met us to show us to the site and got us settled. Easy pull thru site with 40' and toad."

Overnight convenience: Several campgrounds cater well to travelers passing through. Angie G. described Kamper Kompanion as a "Perfect overnight stop. Just off the highway, but minimal noise. Clean. Well maintained. Pleasant staff. We had a long pull through, but there are a limited number of those."
