COE Rend Lake North Sandusky Recreation Area

    Great fishing camp

North Sandusky Campground has 60 reservable campsites. All campsites have electric hookups, 16 campsites are full-hookup., 30 & 50 amp. There is a dump station, hot showers and flush toilets. Most sites are fairly level, but some have an incline to get into. Sites have water and sewer, and a picnic table. Sites are close to the water so you can fish or boat right from your campsite. There is a boat dock, boat ramp, playground, and disk golf course.

    Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

Many lakeside sites, extra long drives for boat trailers, quiet and scenic

Rend Lake is a large COE recreation area with 4 campgrounds, some with full hook ups for $28 a night, two dams, 2 beaches, several boat launches, a marina, golf course and a restaurant.  Not all facilities were open when we visited in March.  Hiking and biking trails and close to town for gas and bait.  Each site has a stone picnic table and fire ring.  Showers, bathrooms and  playgrounds in multiple places and convenient locations.  Some sites do have steep grade, originally booked Bluejay 48 and moved.

    Opossum Creek

    Nice so can be crowded

The Opossum Creek Recreation area is open year-round for the boat ramp and Disabled / children fishing pond and pier. The campground is only open Memorial Day to Labor Day. I camped here in June, however I did the photography in October so there are no campers in the shots. This campground is only about 6 miles from the town of Shelbyville where there is a Walmart, restaurant’s, gas stations, bait, hardware stores, medical care, the Shelbyville Dam, Beach, City Park with lakeside trails and firewood. This proximity to facility’s makes it popular, so having less than 100 campsites it tends to fill up quickly. It is advisable to book ahead on-line if you want to stay here. The sites are nice and the park is clean, but the sites are close together. The boat ramp is well thought out with tons of parking and being close to town is usually busy in the summer season. This campground is also cared for by the Corps of Engineers and seasoned camp hosts man the gate house at the campground. The disabled fishing pond is well stocked so it is easy for wheel chair bound fishermen to catch their daily quota. I recommend this campground for people with motorhomes, fifth-wheels and campers that want to take in the Shelbyville lake town experience while visiting.

    Wonderful layover and family friendly

Timber Trails Campground is a easy layover off of I-70, offering a family-friendly environment. The park provided us an easy in and out, pull-through site that was level and convenient. Coles Creek Recreation Area

    Nice lake, quiet campground

Coles Creek Campground on Carlyle Lake has 219 sites, most with full hookups, and shade. (There is 30 & 50 a as no service). Internet is spotty. There are also 2 group campsites with cabins. There are showers, flush toilet, a playground, fish cleaning station, boat ramp and a dump station. There is also a laundry area. All the campsites are either on the shoreline or a short walk to the lake. The whole campground is fairly flat, so the sites are level and easy to get into. There are a few pull through sites. Comes Creek is on the east side of Carlyle Lake, away from the larger, more crowded Hazlet State Park area. It’s a great place for fishing and boating or just enjoying the lake. The lake is a prime fishing and boating lake, and is recognized as one of the nation's top ten inland sailing lakes.

    Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground

    Quiet camping convenient to I-57

Wayne Fitzgerald State Park is on Rend Lake, just off I-57 in Southern Illinois. It’s a great place for camping, fishing and bikes. It’s convenient for a short stop if you are traveling through, or as a destination. Although it’s right off the interstate there is no traffic noise. The campground has 40 tent sites and over 240 modern campsites, which offer electrical hookups, water and sewer facilities. Modern sites are $20/night, with 30/50 amp service. Primitive sites are $6. There is no internet. There are a few pull through sites.. there is lots of room and the sites appear to be level. There are 3 shower buildings. Many sites can be reserved online. There is a playground, and boat ramp. The park has hunting, fishing, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, hiking and boating. there is a golf course nearby and a lodge. Rend Lake is well-known for crappie, particularly in the early spring, as well as largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill.

    Okaw Valley Kampground

    Very Convenient!

This campground is very convenient if you’re looking for a quick stay during a trip. It’s just a short hop off the highway, yet the road noise wasn’t bad. Barb, one of the owners was very helpful and nice. The ground was very squishy due to melted snow and a lot of rain. And Barb apologized for that, even though it’s not her fault. Did not use the facilities. It’s big rig friendly and has pull through sites.

    Lithia Springs

    Great place for outdoors activities

The Lithia Springs recreation area near Shelbyville, IL. On Lake Shelbyville has so many things to offer. This is one of my favorite places on the lake for boating, swimming and group camping. There are 105 campsites and they fill up with reservations in the spring and summer months, I would recommend reserving a site on line at: https://www.recreation.gov .

The campground is run by the Corps of engineers, it is well cared for with clean shower houses and restrooms. There is a boat ramp, picnic areas, a small swimming beach and very nice lakeside campsites. Half the campsites have electric hookups and water near the sites, the other half now have full hookups and 50 amp service. It is recommended to fill your tanks as you enter so you won’t need to get water during your stay for the sites on the point, those do not have full hookups. I tent camp when I stay here now, but have camped here with a motorhome and filled up when I entered and dumped when I left for a long weekend.

All sites have picnic tables, fire rings with grates and most also have a lantern stand. Most sites have a decent amount of room between them and there are some buddy sites where you share a large table cooking area and park facing each other. There are flat areas for tents and you can have two tents as well as an RV on each site.

The marina here is great with boat gas, fishing equipment, bait, snacks and other items you might need in a pinch. They also rent fishing boats and pontoon boats so you can go on a boating excursion while camping here for a price.

There are also cabins and motel rooms with a kitchen near the park entrance if you have a desire for that kind of lodging. See the links below for that.

Guide to Kinmundy

RV parks near Kinmundy, Illinois provide travelers with connections to both Interstate 57 and Interstate 64. The surrounding terrain features gently rolling farmland punctuated by small lakes and wooded areas. Most campgrounds in this region sit at elevations between 500-600 feet above sea level with summer temperatures averaging 85°F and frequent thunderstorms from May through September.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Spring Creek Campground offers a well-maintained fishing pond that attracts anglers. "The fishing pond is great and beautiful. Big rig friendly. Bob showed up as I pulled in and made sure I was all set for the night," notes one camper at Spring Creek Campground.

Playground access: Multiple RV parks near Kinmundy feature playground facilities for children. "There is a nice playground in the shade next to a pavilion," mentions a visitor to Spring Creek Campground. Similarly, Archway RV Park includes "a nice playground and dog park as well as a pond at the location."

Lake activities: Camp Lakewood provides lakefront sites with water access. "Beautiful view from site 19! My son came to fish so make sure your site isn't on a hill where you can't fish from the site. Fishing is good though, the bass are biting! The swimming area is basically just a dock you can jump off of but it's not crowded at all," reports a recent visitor.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness ranks high in camper satisfaction at several parks. "Bathrooms are lovely and clean," mentions one tent camper at Cedarbrook RV Park and Campground. At Camp Lakewood, another visitor notes, "The bathrooms are so clean! Nice place overall!"

Overnight convenience: Many travelers appreciate the strategic location of campgrounds for interstate travel. "We travel between Charleston, SC and Omaha, NE several times a year and always stay here on return trip. Long first day drive, but so handy and staff couldn't be more accommodating to our late arrivals," writes one Archway RV Park visitor.

On-site amenities: Archway RV Park receives praise for its connectivity options. "The WiFi works great as I was able to stream anything I wanted on Hulu," mentions one camper. Camp Lakewood offers additional conveniences including "a store there as well to help campers purchase whatever they need during their stay."

What you should know

Site spacing: Many RV parks in the Kinmundy region feature close site arrangements. According to one camper at Camp Lakewood, "The sites are fairly tight. Couldn't erect our screen house even if we wanted to."

Seasonal considerations: Some campgrounds operate on limited schedules. Cedarbrook RV Park and Campground runs from April through October, restricting off-season camping options.

Limited tent sites: Most facilities primarily cater to RVs with fewer tent options. "There are only about 6 tent sites at this campground, which makes it not entirely friendly for tent campers," notes a visitor to Cedarbrook RV Park.

Varied hookup configurations: Percival Springs RV Campground offers specific site arrangements. "Huge pull thru sites for about 4 rigs. Lots of grass for 4 legged friends," mentions one camper. Another notes, "Mostly long term occupants with about 5 sites for travelers."

Tips for camping with families

Dog-friendly areas: Several campgrounds accommodate pets with dedicated spaces. "There is a nice doggie park area fenced off too!!" shares a visitor to Archway RV Park, making it suitable for families traveling with four-legged members.

Evening entertainment: Kaskaskia Dragon RV Park provides easy access to nearby services. "Long spots, friendly owner, easy access to hardware store across the street, coin laundry available," notes a recent guest, allowing families convenient shopping options.

Swimming options: Camp Lakewood offers water recreation. "The swimming area is basically just a dock you can jump off of but it's not crowded at all so plenty of room for my family," shares one visitor with children.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: At Lakeside RV Campground, site choice matters. "No sewage hookup, but does have a dump station," warns one experienced RVer. Another camper at Camp Lakewood advises, "The campground is fairly small. They appeared to have all gravel sites with minimal grass."

Arrival planning: Late arrivals require advance coordination at some parks. "We booked this on the road, and even though the office was closed, a site had been reserved and marked for us," shares an Archway RV Park visitor.

Power connections: Adapters may be necessary at some RV parks near Kinmundy. At Archway, "Full-hookups with only a 50amp connection so if you are using 30 make sure you have a 50/30 adapter," advises a camper.
