Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area offers camping near Kinmundy with dedicated pet-friendly sites across three loops. Dogs must be leashed at all times, and the campground provides ample space for walking pets. Most sites feature picnic tables, fire pits, and electric hookups. The campground has very little cell service, making it an ideal location to unplug and enjoy time outdoors with pets. Bathroom facilities are clean and include showers. The park's tent sites are basic but fairly level, while RV sites include water and electric connections.
Pet owners appreciate the trails connecting the campground to the marina, though some report the trails could be better marked. The park features a swimming beach that pets should be kept away from, but the large lake offers plenty of shoreline areas where dogs can access water. The campground is near small towns Farina and Kinmundy, both less than 10 miles away, providing access to supplies if needed. During summer months, the temperature can get quite hot, so campers should ensure pets have adequate shade and water. Wildlife is present throughout the park, requiring pets to remain secured at campsites and on trails for their safety and the protection of local animals.
"Most of the sites are large and a good distance from the next one. Shower house is alright. The store/restaurant has been closed for a year or two now because of the Illinois budget."
"Lots of squirrels for the dogs to chase and lots of wood in & around the campground. Hosts told us they were making more space for specific species of trees so “take all you want” from the area."
"There’s a very nice updated playground and a pond with a walking path around it. The place is very well taken care of. If we ever came back this way we would stay again."
"Beautiful walking paths, convenient, great pricing. They filled us up on LP too. Thanks again, Barb and Gary!"

One of the first campgrounds I ever went to and when camping in Illinois, my go-to campground and lake. My wife and I love this lake and have a lot of memories here.
This campground is beautiful with lots of gardens and potted plants at a lot of the campsites The host is very friendly, the pool is well maintained, they have a dog park The Host even led us to our spot..
I called a day in advance and was able to schedule a reservation, the lady on the phone was very nice. Upon arrival I was greeted nicely and checked in quickly. While beginning setup, I noticed an issue with the power at my particular spot and decided to let the staff know of the issue. They offered to move us to another spot and were very nice. The WiFi works great as I was able to stream anything I wanted on Hulu. There is a nice playground and dog park as well as a pond at the location. Great place to stop traveling through or for a weekend.
Wonderful private campground surround by woods, an open field and a small pond. There is a small playground, covered patio, bathrooms with showers and plenty of lawn space! Pet friendly and looks very ADA accessible, I had a great time spending one night here with my dog. $15 for tent/primitive camping, $25 for electric!
Family and pet friendly, nice bath houses, most sites are spacious.
Minutes away from beach access.
Most of the sites are large and a good distance from the next one. Shower house is alright. The store/restaurant has been closed for a year or two now because of the Illinois budget. There's a dollar store in Farina and a grocery store in Kinmundy; both towns are less than 10 miles away. The lake is big enough for ski boats but nice for kayaks also. Swim beach is not well maintained due to the budget but also doesn't cost anything since they can't pay anyone to man the gate, but it's not horrible.
Campground is off the beaten path, lots of space to spread out, and the top 4 amenities (electricity, water, flush toilets and showers). It’s not the cleanest bathrooms but certainly not the worst. Close to a Walmart for all your need and great sunsets too. Plus pets are allowed
Lithia Springs is a great campground with a wonderful marina located on beautiful Lake Shelbyville! We stayed at Site #12 overlooking the lake. The site was large and level although it can be tricky to back into. Also, the site is adjacent to a water observation/access area which invites a lot of foot traffic. This can be frustrating especially if you have pets.
We loved staying here. Pet friendly and beautiful lake views from many of the camp sites. I recommend checking the grade of the camp site because some of the ones next to the lake were at a pretty big angle. Our site was nice and flat so no issues there. We loved it and would definitely stay again.
Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area sits on a 3,100-acre reservoir, located at an elevation of about 550 feet in south-central Illinois. The climate features hot summers with temperatures often reaching the 90s and cold winters where below-freezing temperatures aren't uncommon. Winter camping is available at some campgrounds in the area with water and electric hookups, though services may be limited during off-season months.
Fishing access: Sam Dale Lake State Conservation Area offers electric-only sites near a small lake with good fishing opportunities. "Clean campground right on the lake," notes Elmer L., who visited specifically for the fishing.
Swimming options: While Forbes has a swimming beach, Coles Creek Recreation Area provides alternative swimming spots. "This wonderful camping area is beautiful with clean campsites. With picnic areas and a beach close you and the family will have a good time and make new friends," explains Jake L.
Trails and wildlife: Boulder Recreation Area has trails connecting to the shoreline with chances to spot local wildlife. "Absolutely gorgeous sunsets across the lake," reports Jim T., who stayed at site 35 and appreciated the views.
Seclusion and unplugging: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Kinmundy offer limited cell service, creating ideal conditions for disconnecting. At Okaw Valley Kampground, campers appreciate the peaceful atmosphere. "We stayed for five days during Labor Day weekend on our way to Emporia Kansas... This turned out to be a lovely little vacation for us," shares Shirley M.
Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain regular cleaning schedules for comfort stations. At Camp Lakewood, visitors consistently mention facility cleanliness. "The bathrooms are so clean! Nice place overall!" notes Riley J., who visited with family.
Waterfront sites: Several campgrounds offer premium lakeside camping spots. At Dam West Campground, "We camped right on the lake with a great view. This site and the site next to it are the best sites in the campground with a pull through layout for a great setup for a lake view from the side of your camper," says Cody S.
Reservation timing: For popular weekends, book well in advance. According to Brooke C. at Dam West, "We arrived at this campground at 11am on a Friday only to find that the first-come, first-serve sites were already full... After talking to the campground host, it sounds like they go fast."
Weather considerations: Summer heat affects both campers and pets. Be prepared for high temperatures and humidity. "Strong winds can sweep across the lake and pick things up if not secured," warns Cody S. about lakeside camping at Dam West.

Pool options: Some campgrounds offer swimming pools as alternatives to lake swimming. Jake L. notes that Stephen A. Forbes "offers a playground, bathhouse, hiking trails, and a small swimming area. There is easy access walking down to the marina."
Site selection: Choose sites based on your family's specific needs. At Coles Creek Recreation Area, "Large waterfront campsites, full hookup loop, and 4 other large loops that have electric. Nice new bath house for those who need it," reports Rhonda B.
Hookup availability: Most campgrounds offer electric, but full hookups are limited. At Okaw Valley Kampground, Rick & Kathy S. found "The owner, Barb, was very friendly and helpful. We had a pull through just for overnight, and it was perfect."
Water quality: Check water sources before filling tanks. Allen S. reports at Eldon Hazlet, "Only complaint that I have was the potable water supply. I filled by trailer's tank at the drinking water supply when you enter the campground. It was extremely dirty with a lot of copper colored solids."
Site spacing: Some campgrounds provide more separation between RVs than others. At Charley Brown City Park, "Campground is off the beaten path, lots of space to spread out, and the top 4 amenities (electricity, water, flush toilets and showers)," according to Sarah, who appreciates the extra room between sites.
