Best Campgrounds near Hanover Park, IL

Campgrounds surrounding Hanover Park, Illinois provide a mix of forest preserve camping and lakeside recreation within a predominantly suburban environment. Blackwell Family Campground in Warrenville, approximately 10 miles west of Hanover Park, represents one of the more accessible natural areas for overnight stays, featuring both tent and RV sites with electrical hookups. Other nearby options include Camp Reinberg in Palatine, which offers cabins alongside traditional camping, and Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin with options for drive-in, hike-in, and walk-in access. Most camping areas in this region function as county-operated forest preserves rather than wilderness campgrounds.

Many DuPage and Cook County forest preserve campgrounds operate seasonally, with most open from May through September or October. "This is a little gem in DuPage County. We live in the area and went here when our child was a baby, as we didn't want to be far from home. The campsites are surprisingly nice," noted one Blackwell visitor. Sites typically require advance reservations, especially for weekend stays when local demand peaks. Campers should note that several forest preserves, including Blackwell, close their gates after sunset, restricting movement in and out until morning. This security measure affects trip planning, as one reviewer mentioned: "The gates closed at sunset and no one is allowed in or out after that. There is no code. It is only open on the weekends."

Several visitors highlight the unexpected serenity found at these suburban campgrounds despite their proximity to urban areas. Blackwell Family Campground receives particular praise for its wooded sites that create privacy between campers, though road noise from nearby Winfield Road remains audible at certain sites. Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs features waterfront camping with boat-in access, while Chicago Northwest KOA in Union provides more developed amenities for RVs and cabins. Campers seeking a quick weekend getaway appreciate the forest preserve campgrounds for their accessibility. As one camper noted about Blackwell: "Driving in here makes you forget you're in the middle town! Quite and roving park rangers which gives it a very safe feel around here."

Sunrise Campground — Richard Bong State Recreation Area

Pleasantly surprised / worth a stop

A "famous" spot because of it's name, Bong rec area was not amazing, but really nice. Plenty of space & foliage between sites and a nice network of trails surrounding the campground. Close to some small towns and the interstate as well, but not close enough to hear traffic.

Adeline Jay-Geo Karis Illinois Beach State Park

    Could be better

This seemed like it could be a really great campground, but it's not taken care of very well and felt a bit unsafe.

It's a huge park, yet the sites aren't very private. The mosquitoes and ticks are the worst I've experienced thus far, and the abandoned buildings by the beach feel like crack dens.

We brought chairs and relaxed by the beach for a while, which was very peaceful and really made the trip.

It's worth checking out if you're interested. I now understand why there are always sites available here when it seems every other campground is fully booked.

    Camp Bullfrog Lake

    Great camping spot

This is my second time staying at Bullfrog lake. The first time I was in spot 2 which had more privacy but felt more cramped. This time I was in spot 18 which felt like it had more space but had almost no shade.

The camp hosts are really hit or miss. One guy was so nice and took a bunch to photos for me of me kayaking. The other guy seemed mad to be alive lol.

The kayaks are $15 and hour and include life vests. The lake is pretty small but it was fun to putter around.

Unfortunately the wood I bought from the camp store took forever to catch flames—my other two neighbors had the same issue.

Bathroom/shower facilities were clean and well stocked.

Overall I’d definitely stay here again.

    Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort

    Not communicable, fraud administration

I reserved 5 nights, paid in full. After just one night, management cancelled my stay because my service dogs(Maltese) supposedly barked. I was fully cooperative, kept them quiet, and even documented this in emails. There was a stray cat near my RV that caused the issue, but instead of solving it, they forced me to leave. No refund for 4 nights. This is unfair, discriminatory, and against ADA law.

Far enough from the city lights, close enough to civilization. Cozy, small park with friendly staff and plenty of amenities. You can walk from one side to other no problem. Plenty of large and small RV's and Trailers with tent camping. Our home away from home, so relaxing!

Sunset Campground — Richard Bong State Recreation Area

Private sites, lots of wildlife ... and mosquitoes

It's a wetland, mosquitoes are happening, but the trade off is just about worth it. If you enjoy bird watching or rabbit spotting, this is a great place to go.

We're from the south, so we are used to mosquitoes, but I have seldom been around so many all at once. Thankfully we had a pop-up screened gazebo that made sitting outside our tent much more enjoyable. I will say this though, even with there being more mosquitoes constantly attacking, I did not have the reactions to them like I do the mosquitoes back in Alabama and Mississippi. I wasn't itching much at all.

But back to the fun part. It was pretty hot a couple days while we were there and to take a break from the heat, we enjoyed the ac in the car and drove around the recreation area and the campgrounds. I have seldom seen as many rabbits as we saw. There were relatively few campers during the week and just about every other campsite had at least a bunny or two.

What drew me to this campground was how private the individual sites were. Each campsite is cut back into the trees so that most are at least semi-private. This was a nice feature given that many other campgrounds you are stacked in like cord wood.

Our first night there, we left the rain fly off of the tent and just enjoyed the stars and the satellites streaking across the sky.

Overall, it was a rather enjoyable week. The shower/bathrooms were nice and clean, though I will admit the shower got too hot even for my wife. It is an easy drive from the recreation area to Kenosha or other points of interest and Lake Michigan is worth a visit if you aren't from the area.

What to do

Hiking and biking trails: Thomas Woods Campground provides access to varied terrain with both wooded areas and prairie trails. "We hiked the trail and saw a mother deer feeding her 2 babies. Hard to believe that there is hiking trails like those in such a densely populated area just outside Elgin, IL," notes one camper at Thomas Woods Campground.

There are lots of places along the lake and ponds to get an easy catch and release," according to one reviewer who visited in late October.

Water recreation: Camp Bullfrog Lake provides kayak rentals at $15 per hour, life vests included. "The kayaks are $15 an hour and include life vests. The lake is pretty small but it was fun to putter around," reports a recent visitor who enjoyed the water activities despite the lake's modest size.

What campers like

Unexpected privacy: Despite being in developed areas, several campgrounds offer secluded sites. At Paul Wolff Campground, one camper noted, "The primitive camp sites were beautiful. Half of them were in the Prairie and the other half was tucked into wonderfully private spots with burn pits and picnic tables."

Accessibility to Chicago: Camp Reinberg offers an ideal base for exploring the city. "It's a short trip to get groceries or whatever you need in Palatine, but there's also a little camp store," explains a reviewer who appreciated the campground's convenient location. "It's not easy to find a place to camp this close to Chicago, let alone someplace really great!"

Clean facilities: Many campers praise the maintenance standards at Camp Bullfrog Lake, which features modern shower buildings. "Bathroom/shower facilities were clean and well stocked," states one visitor who found the amenities well-maintained despite the campground's popularity.

What you should know

Gate closure policies: Multiple forest preserve campgrounds implement strict gate closures after sunset. At Paul Wolff Campground, a visitor warns, "The gates closed at sunset and no one is allowed in or out after that. There is no code. It is only open on the weekends."

Seasonal availability: Most campsites near Hanover Park have limited operational seasons. "This campground is in a populated area but the nature preserve is big. We rarely saw traffic once here," notes a camper about Paul Wolff Campground, which typically operates May through October.

Pricing considerations: Several sites charge different rates for county residents versus non-residents. "Price is very reasonable and the people are great. Easy to get in and out. Lots are nice and well kept," according to one visitor who found Paul Wolff's rates acceptable, though others mention that non-county residents pay significantly more.

Tips for camping with families

Free activities: Camp Reinberg offers programming for children at no extra cost. "Free firewood and you can purchase more for just $5," notes one camper who also mentioned the family-friendly fire-spinning demonstration at the pavilion.

Youth-friendly hiking: Big Rock Campground features accessible trails for children. "Took my daughter for a simple overnight and it was great. Open campground with nearly zero tree. We had a great campfire but didn't take advantage of the whole park to explore. She wants to again this year but we will spend more time hiking," shares a father who found the trails appropriate for family exploration.

Bike-friendly options: Thomas Woods offers paved paths appropriate for children learning to ride. "The campground is set up nicely. Our site had the usual picnic table and a short walk to the restrooms and water. What we enjoyed the most was the variety of hiking trails," says a visitor who appreciated the trail variety for family outings.

Tips from RVers

Hookup limitations: Water connections can be challenging at several campgrounds. "Make sure you have extra hose," advises a camper at Big Rock Campground. "The water hookups are kind of far from the individual sites."

Site selection strategy: At Chicago Northwest KOA, RV site layout requires planning. "It's on the smaller side and the RV sites are a little close together but they have it set up where your RVs doors open on opposite sides so it gives a little privacy," explains a visitor who found the arrangement workable despite proximity to neighbors.

Leveling considerations: Paul Wolff Campground receives high marks for site preparation. "If you need the water/electric then this is a great choice," notes a teardrop camper. "All the sites have paved pads," making leveling straightforward for most rigs compared to other options near Hanover Park.
