Camping options within 30 miles of Greenville, Illinois center around Carlyle Lake, the largest lake in Illinois, with multiple well-established campgrounds managed by state agencies and the Army Corps of Engineers. Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area offers over 300 electric sites and primitive tent camping areas, with some sites directly on the lakeshore. Nearby, the Corps of Engineers operates several highly-rated campgrounds including Dam West, Dam East, and Coles Creek Recreation Area, all featuring lakeside camping with varying levels of hookups. Private campgrounds like Timber Trails in Mulberry Grove and Bonanza Campground in Smithboro provide additional options for RV travelers seeking full hookups within a short drive of Greenville.

Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally, with peak availability from April through October, though Eldon Hazlet remains open year-round. Reservations are essential during summer weekends and holidays, particularly for waterfront sites. Spring flooding occasionally affects access to some areas, as noted by campers at Eldon Hazlet. The region experiences typical Midwestern seasonal variations with hot, humid summers and cold winters. Many campgrounds offer electric hookups but have centralized water access points. As one camper noted, "There is only one fill station to fill your freshwater tanks, so during busier times there can sometimes be a line of people waiting." Cell service is generally adequate throughout the area, with most reviewers reporting 2-3 bars of service.

Shaded sites are highly valued by visitors to the region, with mature trees providing relief from summer heat at many campgrounds. "Most sites have plenty of shade and room in between so you were not right on top of your neighbors," reported one camper at Eldon Hazlet. Fishing opportunities are exceptional, with Carlyle Lake recognized as one of the nation's top ten inland sailing lakes and popular for boating. Many campgrounds feature clean shower facilities, playgrounds, and beaches for swimming. The relative proximity to St. Louis (about an hour's drive) makes these campgrounds popular weekend destinations. Visitors particularly appreciate the spacious sites at Corps of Engineers campgrounds, with one reviewer noting, "The campground has it all: full hookups, reservable sites, walk-up sites, and all sites are large!"

      St Louis Mulberry RV Gardens

      Could be worse

Pulled in after the office had closed. They knew we would show up late. Around 1930. Still light outside. Opened the after hours check in and there was nothing for us. Or a map. Luckily there was a number to call. We called. Lady said she was on break and would call us back. Never did. After digging through emails, we finally found what site they had assigned to us. Very small print. Due to this app we were able to use the map posted. However there was no p10 site. Just up to p09. Called the lady back. Said there’s a p10 but that she would move us to p9 in the system. Just decide to stay because we’ve been driving all day. Beautiful grounds/location. Enjoyed a nice sunset. It’s sad it’s “kept up” by these people who can’t help someone because they are on break. Appears a lot of the campers live here. Which to me doesn’t matter. But it does when you can’t help someone for 5 min. Campers are nice. Bath house is a bit dirty. But usable. Skipping a shower tonight but the toilets and sink work.

Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park

      Good location

We only booked 1 night. Location was great but we had to make lot spaces a few times due to the uneven conditions of the lot spaces. Fortunately there was a nice gentleman who worked here and found a space that suited us better. The sites to the back are much better than the ones to the front! The view of the Arch is amazing but a little sketchy … especially at night! But it worked for the night!

      Percival Springs RV Campground

      Beautiful spot

Next door to the little public airport with fairy lights strung about. An open field greats you at your site and you can watch the helicopter or people fly with parachutes. Full hook ups. No WiFi or cable or anything fancy. There is a little playground on site as well. Pet friendly. There could be a height problem for people coming off expressway as there is a train track with a 13’10” clearance. No gas within 5 miles. Wasn’t an issue for us. Campsite accepts cash, check, and Venmo.

      Great experience

This is a great campground and the owners are awesome! My husband and I are riding our bicycles cross country. The day we checked into the campground,he had a Crohn's flare/bowel block and went to the hospital for 4 days. The owners stored our bikes, watched our tent, and even picked us up from the hospital! Such nice people! The campground is clean, has a great showerhouse, lots of trees, and even has recliners in the laundry room. I highly recommend staying here!

      Dam East - Mcnair Campground

      Peaceful and quiet

Another really nice COE campground. With our pass for seniors, we only paid $10 for electric. The sites were a little closer together than normal COE’s but still plenty of room. Water spicket’s were placed throughout the park but not at each site. There was a lake with a swim beach and two playgrounds. Sites were very level. Nice and shady. Close to town. Well maintained showers.

    Guide to Greenville

Camping near Greenville, Illinois centers on a mix of spacious state and federally managed sites within a 30-mile radius. The region sits in Illinois' Mississippi border lands where elevations average 500-600 feet above sea level. During summer months, campers can expect temperatures averaging 85-90°F with high humidity, while spring brings frequent rain that occasionally causes temporary closures at certain campgrounds.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities at Dam West Spillway: Sites provide direct lake access with areas designed specifically for anglers. "There are a lot of mature trees in the campground that provides plenty of shade in the summer. Many of the sites are blacktopped and large RV's will fit on the sites," notes reviewer Jeanie H.

Swimming at Coles Creek Recreation Area: The campground features dedicated swimming areas for campers. "This wonderful camping area is beautiful with clean campsites. With picnic areas and a beach close you and the family will have a good time and make new friends," according to Jake L.

Biking at Dam West Campground: Paved bike paths connect the campground to the marina. "There is a bike path that goes right past the campground that was busy all weekend with bikers, runners, and walkers, and takes you from the shower house to the marina in just a short walk," reports Annie C.

    What campers like

Level sites at Bonanza Campground: Sites are precisely graded for easy setup. "THE MOST level site we have ever had in allllll our years of travel. Literally 0's all around for level on the Levelmate Pro. I didn't even unhook the trailer, just put the 4 scissor jacks and tongue jack down for stability," says Bruce H.

Spacious waterfront camping at Coles Creek Rec Area: Sites provide room to spread out with water views. "Large waterfront campsites, full hookup loop, and 4 other large loops that have electric. Nice new bath house for those who need it," writes Rhonda B.

Winter camping options at Illini Campground: Some sites remain open year-round for off-season stays. "Site 26. We were basically by ourselves being mid week in November. Great view. Nice camp hosts. This place looks like it could get pretty full in the summer," notes Wendy F.

    What you should know

Water quality issues at Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area: Some campers report problems with water clarity. "Only complaint that I have was the potable water supply. I filled my trailer's tank at the drinking water supply when you enter the campground. It was extremely dirty with a lot of copper colored solids," reports Allen S.

Limited tent camping options at certain campgrounds: Cedarbrook RV Park has minimal tent facilities. "There are only about 6 tent sites at this campground, which makes it not entirely friendly for tent campers," writes Kaitlyn H.

High weekend occupancy rates: Campgrounds fill quickly, especially during peak season. "We arrived at this campground at 11am on a Friday only to find that the first-come, first-serve sites were already full," notes Brooke C. about Dam West Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Plan for active play at Boulder Recreation Area: The campground offers multiple recreational facilities. "This campground offers many sites that are right on the lake. Beautiful views. Also boasts the best shower house/bathrooms around. They are air conditioned and cleaned regularly," says Phil W.

Halloween camping events: Special seasonal activities are available in fall. "They have a huge Halloween event every year where people decorate their sites (pretty extensively) and there's a haunted house, then kids trick or treat from site to site. The campground also provides pumpkin painting contests and other fun activities," writes Aimee T.

Facilities for younger children: Many sites have dedicated play areas. "There are three playground areas, a basketball court, sand volleyball and a pool during summer months. Lots of families with kids, bike rides and plenty of other lake and outdoor activities in the area," notes Brooke C.

    Tips from RVers

Off-season camping at Okaw Valley Kampground: Shoulder seasons offer more availability. "We stopped here on our way home for one night, but got in early enough to enjoy a walk and have a camp fire that evening. Small park but very long, narrow pull through sites on the full hook up side," reports Russ G.

Full-service sites for longer stays: Several campgrounds offer complete hookups. "We live an hour away in St Louis and park our RV near Boulder because we visit so often. It is very clean, and most of the sites are waterfront or at least have a good view of the lake," says Shane E.

Restroom considerations: Quality varies between facilities. "The bathrooms were lovely and clean," notes Kaitlyn H. about Cedarbrook RV, while another camper mentioned "FABULOUS, and super clean" facilities at Dam West Spillway that "smell like the laundry facilities."
