For tent campers seeking an affordable option, the World Shooting and Recreational Complex provides basic sites with fire rings but limited amenities. North Marcum offers more developed facilities with picnic tables, drinking water, showers, and trash service, making it suitable for campers who prefer some comforts while still enjoying tent camping.

Tent campers at Carlyle Lake should note the varying amenities between campgrounds. North Marcum Day Use Area provides essential services like toilets, drinking water, and trash disposal, making it popular for weekend tent camping trips. Sites are generally well-maintained with picnic tables and established fire rings. North Marcum's proximity to Rend Lake creates opportunities for swimming, fishing, and bird watching, with clean beaches suitable for families. Areas further from main recreation zones provide more seclusion for tent campers seeking quiet. One camper noted that "the Corps of Engineers really takes care of these camp grounds, very clean, most have new showers," highlighting the well-maintained facilities at North Marcum Day Use Area. Countryside Escape, despite being listed, appears to be a private residence rather than a legitimate tent camping option according to multiple visitor reports.

    Washington County State Recreation Area

    Shady Rest campground

Really great campground. Good mix of tents and RVs. Bath house was very well kept and clean. Showers ran cold at first but after a few mins it gets warmer! There were plenty of pit toliets through out the campground and trash cans. My tent site was clean, good flat spot for tent, picnic table and fire pit with attached grill.

The Concession building in the park is closing. No boat rentals, selling everything he has on the shelf.

Caught a few bass and and good amount of hiking. Large trail around the whole lake, smaller trails lead to sites around the different campgrounds.

    Horseshoe Lake State Park Campground

    Horseshoe Lake Recreation Area

Nice little campground close to down town St Louis (when the leaves are down I bet you can see the Arch). Campsites are nice and flat with the standard picnic tables and fire rings. No showers, but decent toilets. The nice thing is the campground is staffed by rangers in the day, and at night they sometimes take a security swing through the campground. Nice lake for fishing and boating.

    Okaw Valley Kampground

    Nice clean and convenient

Family owned with a nice little fishing area (no license required catch and release) paddle boats and camp store. A nice pool with a big covered pavilion, clean restrooms and showers with hot water. We had a level pull thru gravel site with a picnic table and small fire ring and didn’t have to unhook for our overnight. Walking/hiking wooded trails 2 cabins available- several seasonal folks. We were there on a Sunday evening and didn’t really see anyone. Little bit of road noise but so convenient! Thanks Barb!

Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

    Quiet, peaceful waterfront escape!

while there are many full service sites available, this campground offers dozens of rustic tent sites right next to Carlyle Lake as well! Our tent site was shaded and our one neighbor was quiet and friendly. We felt secluded yet had easy access to the campground shower house, swimming pool, wooded nature trail, campground hosts and camp store. We were within a few minutes drive of the main lake beach and facilities that include a restaraunt and visitors center. A 7 minute drive gets you into the town of Carlyle which has all the necessities- food, gas and Walmart.

We were incredibly pleased with the quiet tranquility of this site and the views were fantastic. We woke up to hear the lake lapping at the shoreline. We had a nearly private cove to fish as well.

This is a wonderful campground and we will certainly Be back again!

Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

    Large Campground, Good Amenities

“Hazlet” has over 300 sites with electric hook-ups and 30+ tent sites. It is a popular destination for locals and those nearby during the summer and fall, but if you are able to choose your site early, there are quite a few options that will offer more privacy. Some sites sit directly on Carlyle Lake.

There are many walking trails in and around the campground, plus a pool and campground store at the entrance. The bathrooms and showers are pretty well maintained and spread out well throughout the large campground.

    Dam West Spillway

    Lakeside camping

Ranger Review Primus LiTech Trek Kettle at Dam West Campground

    Campground Review

What a great campground on the shore of Carlyle Lake! Right next to the marina and with many sites right on the lake, you can’t go wrong here. Sites looked a bit more level on the inside of the loop than the lakeside sites, but I guess that’s the price you pay for real estate. My site was not the most level, but only steps from the beach with a few trees that might work for hammocking. The site was really clean and had plenty of space, with a nice paved parking pad, fire pit, picnic table, and electric hook up (all sites have electric!). Across the drive was a nice amphitheater and playground and a basic bathroom. The fairly clean shower house for the whole campground is up near the entrance (it also has a laundry room, but I did not check it out). The campground host for this summer is super nice and is likely to visit for a bit as he buzzes around on his scooter. There is a bike path that goes right past the campground that was busy all weekend with bikers, runners, and walkers, and takes you from the shower house to the marina in just a short walk.

    Gear Review

Primus LiTech Trek Kettle As a Ranger for The Dyrt, from time to time I get new gear to review. On this camping trip I tested out Primus LiTech Trek Kettle. I have to say, this may be my new favorite cooking pot. It is the perfect size for one person(which works well as I frequently camp solo). I used it to heat up some frozen chili for dinner and then used it again in the morning to heat water for oatmeal. Here’s what I liked: The kettle holds just a bit more than a liter of water(or chili), which is about all you need to make coffee, heat large single servings of food, or just about anything It’s non-stick, so clean-up is a breeze and doesn’t retain odors The handles fold out and are easy to grip, and fold around the pot for easy out of the way storage Its super light weight(perfect for backpacking) Even though it was taller than wide, water heated up in it very quickly My little fuel canister fits inside perfectly with almost no rattling Primus included a nice carrying bag that fits the pot and has a small bit of room to spare Here’s what baffled me: The lid doubles as a tiny nonstick frying pan. But it is big enough for maybe one egg. It is so small that I am not exactly sure what you could make in it. I understand the desire to make the lid“usable”, but maybe a regular lid with a colander built in would have been more useful. The lid is not a great fit, and when packing up for storage, it kept sliding off. Despite the weird frying pan lid, I am really happy with the LiTech Kettle. It meets all of my needs in a lightweight package. It is easy to clean up, packs small, has good handles, and is a great addition to my camp cooking arsenal.

Guide to Carlyle Lake

Carlyle Lake features tent camping options in established campgrounds managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Located in Clinton County, Illinois, the lake spans 26,000 acres with 83 miles of shoreline, making it the largest man-made lake in Illinois. Camping areas surround the lake with varying levels of development and amenities, with most sites open from April through October when temperatures range from 50-85°F during primary camping season.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Carlyle Lake offers excellent fishing for crappie, catfish, and largemouth bass. The World Shooting and Recreational Complex includes lake access where campers can fish from the bank. One visitor noted, "Huge campground with a lake to boat, kayak or fish from the bank. Quiet but can be dry and hot in the summer."

Water recreation: Swimming, boating, and kayaking are popular summer activities. At North Marcum Day Use Area, campers can enjoy the beach. A visitor described it as "an beautiful little beach on Rend lake. The lake is an important bird habitat making it a great place for my fellow bord watchers to go!"

Seasonal events: During August, the World Shooting Complex hosts the American Trap Shooters Association "Grand" Event, which fills the campground. A camper observed, "During that event the first couple weeks in August the campground is full. We were here last weekend in August. Only one other camper within sight of our spot."

What campers like

Spacious camping areas: The tent camping areas around Carlyle Lake provide ample space between sites at most campgrounds. At World Shooting Complex, campers appreciate the layout: "Site has tons of camping sites so finding a spot should not be an issue," according to one reviewer.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the well-maintained facilities at Corps of Engineers campgrounds. Visitors to Spillway Group Area appreciate the picnic tables and electric hookups available at designated sites.

Wildlife viewing: The lake environment attracts diverse bird species, making it popular with birdwatchers. One camper at North Marcum noted the lake is "an important bird habitat making it a great place for my fellow bord watchers to go!"

What you should know

Seasonal availability: Most Carlyle Lake campgrounds operate seasonally, with peak usage during summer months. Some areas like World Shooting Complex remain open year-round but with limited facilities during winter.

Variable amenities: Facilities vary significantly between campgrounds. Some tent camping areas offer modern amenities while others are more rustic. A camper at World Shooting Complex noted, "There is a shower house I believe but could not access a couple of the doors I tried. I imagine they had some unlocked but I didn't try all the doors."

Verification recommended: Some listings may be inaccurate. The Countryside Escape listing appears to be a private residence rather than a legitimate camping option. A visitor warned, "Didn't find a campground, only someone's home. I didn't approach to ask, since it looks like a private home. Not sure why this is on the app."

Tips for camping with families

Beach conditions: Families appreciate the clean beaches at certain locations. One camper at North Marcum reported, "The beach is also tidy and free of alot of trash, perfect for the youngsters to play in."

Quiet weekdays: For families seeking more peaceful tent camping near Carlyle Lake, consider weekdays when campgrounds are less crowded. World Shooting Complex can be particularly empty during non-event periods.

Group camping options: Spillway Group Area offers designated spaces for family or group camping with amenities including picnic tables and electric hookups, though advance planning is necessary as facilities are limited.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: The World Shooting Complex offers full hookups for RVs. A camper reported, "This was our first camp in our new to us travel trailer. Not many trees. Lot's of full hookups."

Limited shade: RV campers should note the lack of tree cover at some campgrounds. At World Shooting Complex, one camper mentioned, "Not many trees," which can make summer camping hot without adequate cooling.
