Best RV Parks & Resorts near Clayton, IL

Driftwood Campground & RV Park offers full hookup sites with concrete pads and spacious layouts for RVs up to 51 sites, open from March through November. The campground includes 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, and sewer connections suitable for larger motorhomes and travel trailers. "We had a concrete pad for our RV which was nice and a decent amount of room to roam," noted one visitor about their experience at nearby Wakonda State Park. Cozy C RV Campground provides year-round access with big-rig friendly sites featuring full hookups and 50-amp service, while Buena Vista Farms Campground offers both 30-amp and 50-amp connections with water and sewer hookups in a rural setting.

During winter months, limited RV parks remain operational in the region, with most seasonal operations closing between November and March. Several campgrounds maintain dump stations on-site, though based on reviews from The Dyrt, water services may be winterized at some locations during colder periods. Pet policies vary between facilities, with most RV parks permitting pets but enforcing leash requirements. Visitors note that reservations become essential during summer and fall weekends, particularly at state park campgrounds like Wakonda where the lakeside sites tend to fill quickly. Most RV parks within 30 miles of Clayton provide trash service, but laundry facilities and propane filling are less common amenities.

    Camp Nauvoo

    Great value, nice campground

Camp Nauvoo is a nice, church operated, park only 5 minutes from downtown Nauvoo. We stayed one night on our way to Minnesota. The sites are sunny and all are pull-through.but some have shade. The park streets are gravel with concrete pull-through sites. The park is very quiet. Great value for $32. Full hookups.

Stayed in campsite#10 which has no shade. It was a concrete pull-through with more than enough parking for my TT and truck and grass on either side. The site included: picnic table. Utilities were located in different spots. 20A/30A/50A electric in the middle, water near the rear, and sewer near the front. Site was level. No neighbor on passenger/awning side.

AT&T had 3 bars of LTE and Verizon 1 bar of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 56.8 Mbps down, 9.3 Mbps up. Free WiFi available, but I had trouble connecting.

If you are southbound on Illinois Hwy 96, the left turn off the highway is very sharp and steep. Might be easier to continue about a mile south and use the scenic turnout to turnaround. It is a pull-through turnout. Then, turn off the highway on the right.

Would stay here again. We camped at Camp Nauvoo in a Travel Trailer.

    Carthage City Park

Accessible, shady, and near sights to see

While they were working on adding a bath house with toilets the campground is at the local golf course to use. 30 amp and water only. Gravel pads, mostly level. Shade and quiet in pm. During day you have golfers but not enough to bother you. A pavilion is available for use. Good area close to stores, fuel and off-site dump station.

    Great River Road Campground

    Good enough for an overnight

No frills camping on the edge of the fairgrounds, there are campsites mostly for RV’s (full hook ups- 50 amp and 30 amp, and sites with sewer), and space for tents on the margins (might be why tent “sites” are free). The bathhouse was locked when I passed through, and no one was camping here, but there is an emergency number to call, so I guess if I had wanted to camp here I could have had someone come out and unlock the bathhouse for me. The town is a short walk away with a convenience store and not much else, but still cute. Don’t expect any privacy or shade here as there are no trees.

    Wildcat Springs Park

Wildcat Creek Campground, Hamilton , Illinois

Wildcat is a very nice campground operated by the City of Hamilton, Illinois. Campground has only 17 RV slots of various sizes. We had room to put our 32 foot fifth wheel and room to park our truck alongside. Ours was one of a couple of sites large enough to handle our size.

Their website says the nightly fee is $15 for tents and $25 fir RV. When we arrived we were informed that it had gone up to $20 fir tent and $30 for RV.

Service excludes electricity of 30 and 50 amp. Water is also available at each site. A dump station is on site.

Also on site is a very nice public pool and interesting Disc Golf course.

Very quite and peaceful surroundings. Just a half mile off of the Mississippi River.

We will definitely return here when we get back to the area.

Wakonda Lake Campground — Wakonda State Park

    Convenient stop

Looking for an overnight stay on a long road trip. Park is close to highway, fairly empty on a Monday night. Easy pull through site close to lake. Quiet. Bathhouse nothing fancy, could have been cleaner. Easy access to dump station. Staff very friendly.

    Cozy C RV Campground, LLC

Convenient spot for a quick stop

Currently this is an RV only campground due to Covid restrictions, but there is ample space for tent camping when they return to allowing tents. So, RV sites include pull through and back in with water and electric hookups, and a dump station on site. There is a nice bathhouse and super clean laundry with a little lending library. Also on site is a community room(currently closed due to covid restrictions), an outdoor pavilion, and a miniature golf set up. The campground is wedged between the highway and a cow farm, so expect some noise, especially with few trees or landscaping to absorb the sound.

Primitive Campground — Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area

State Park away from busier Illinois

https://camp.exploremoreil.com/ 84 electric RV sites all reservable except 21 First Come sites. 18 sites are full hookup. Several 50 amp sites but majority are 30 amp. Modern Shower house and 7 Vault toilet buildings. Newer Campground so Shade Trees are smaller still. Have camped here 4 times past 3 years. Like the quite agricultural Illinois environment but suggest shopping for your needs prior to leaving larger cities as most of the few small towns are limited to a Bar and Dollar store.

    Hickory Haven Campground

    Pretty, wooded campground

Needed an overnight spot on our way north, off season for camping in this area.  Called mid afternoon for availability and spoke with John who promptly told us he would hold a site for us. Large campground that has a few full hookup sites open year around. We were given a site between a couple of traveling workers. Both came out to greet us which was very nice. Site was a bit small but certainly ok for a night's stay. Many larger sites farther back in the closed area. Full hook-ups. Level gravel. Picnic table available. Laundry and restrooms very clean. Playground, pavilion for movies, dog area, frog pond, hiking trails and beautiful woods. A few camping supplies available in the office. This would be a fun getaway for families in the summer months.

Guide to Clayton

Campsites near Clayton, Illinois cluster around the Mississippi River and farm country with elevations ranging from 500 to 700 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures typically reach 85-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder conditions with overnight temperatures between 40-65°F. Most campgrounds in this region close for winter between November and March, though a few RV parks near Clayton maintain year-round operations.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: 6 lakes: Wakonda State Park offers multiple fishing lakes with boat rentals available. "There are a couple of water spikots scattered around the campgrounds, and there is one hiking trail that heads out of the campground near the woodlot. Elsewhere in the park is a nice swimming beach with a place to shower off the sand, and some interesting cement tunnels/bunkers that kids might have fun exploring," notes Annie C. about Boulder Lake Campground.

Hiking trails: various lengths: The trail system at Wakonda State Park includes routes ranging from half a mile to 3 miles. Mary N. mentions, "Great trails too, ranging from half a mile to 3 miles. Nice lakes, kayaking rentals available, and a swimming beach too." Hiking paths generally remain open year-round, weather permitting.

Beach swimming: sandy shoreline: The swimming beach at Wakonda Lake Campground provides summer recreation from Memorial Day through Labor Day. "Nice lakes plus swimming and boating facilities. We stayed by Wakonda Lake in an oversized site with steps leading down to a little beach," reports Muffy Clark G.

What campers like

Concrete pads: level sites: Many RV sites at Driftwood Campground feature concrete pads that keep equipment level even after rain. Joey S. shares, "Clean facilities, full hookup sites with concrete pads. A pool for the warm months, and a conservation site across the street. Plenty of fishing on the Mississippi river."

Campsite privacy: varies by location: Primitive Campground at Jim Edgar Panther Creek offers well-spaced sites with natural buffers. Amanda C. describes, "There are 7 sites well spaced with a picnic table, fire ring, trash can and three sided shelter in each site. Pit toilets are in the middle. Each site is along the tree line with plenty of shade."

Winter camping options: limited availability: While most campgrounds close during winter months, Cozy C RV Campground maintains year-round operations. Victoria G. notes, "Pulled in 4/12, smaller campground, very few people here this time of year. Owners live right off the property so very convenient. Very nice owner Helen, came by the site to check us in."

What you should know

Highway noise: varies by campground: Some campgrounds experience traffic noise due to proximity to major roads. A reviewer at Buena Vista Farms Campground mentioned, "Even though it was a bit off of the interstate, the noise from the highway was awful. The prairie land is flat which lends itself to easily traveling road noise."

Bathhouse conditions: seasonal considerations: Facility maintenance varies throughout the camping season. According to one Cozy C RV Campground reviewer, "The not so great: The date was in late December so we expected some winterizing. So the water was off at the site. It was also off at the bath house. No water for bathing, washing hands, toilets or washing dishes."

Lake conditions: clarity varies: Lakes in the region may have varying water clarity depending on season and recent weather. One camper at Boulder Lake Campground noted, "The lakes are not clear and had snakes which we saw while fishing. The park itself didn't offer nice views."

Tips for camping with families

Recreation amenities: mini-golf and games: Some campgrounds offer additional activities beyond standard outdoor recreation. Sarah S. from Buena Vista Farms Campground shares, "They offer kayaks, canoes, and peddle boats free to campers. There is an open cabin with games, books, and WiFi. Basketball court, play area, and outdoor games."

Kid-friendly exploration: concrete tunnels: Wakonda State Park features unique concrete structures that interest children. "Elsewhere in the park is a nice swimming beach with a place to shower off the sand, and some interesting cement tunnels/bunkers that kids might have fun exploring," mentions Annie C.

Activity levels: busy during summer: Mark Twain Lake Jellystone Park tends to be lively during peak season. Cathy S. notes, "I found the camping area to be tight but what a fun place to be. Being after Labor Day the water par was closed, but looked like fun. Mini golf was booming. They had nice pavilion areas for gatherings."

Tips from RVers

Hookup access: placement varies: At Cozy C RV Campground, the site layout provides easy pull-through access. Annie C. explains, "RV sites include pull through and back in with water and electric hookups, and a dump station on site."

Site spacing: tight in some areas: Some RV parks have limited space between neighboring units. Heather B. at Woodyz Acres RV Park & Campground comments, "The spots we had were very close together. Would not have enjoyed that if we were there longer. I think there are other spots with more room, but not 100% sure? We had full hook ups."

Off-season arrival considerations: For RV camping near Clayton, Illinois during shoulder seasons, advance communication helps ensure services are available. Candace M. at Woodyz Acres notes, "The good: The reservation process was friendly and they accommodated our after hours arrival. The electrical connections were great with 50/30/20 amp receptacles. Location was convenient and easy to access."
