Equestrian camping near Buncombe, Illinois offers access to the diverse landscapes of the Shawnee National Forest region. The region receives an average of 46 inches of rainfall annually, creating lush environments for trail riding and outdoor recreation throughout spring and fall.
What to do
Trail riding exploration: Shawnee Forest Campground connects riders to numerous paved walking paths built on a former golf course. "There's no formal dog area, but there are paved trails around the large CG area, which made it nice to walk our dogs," notes camper MickandKarla W.
Fishing opportunities: Multiple stocked lakes and ponds provide year-round fishing access without requiring special permits. "There's a small lake and two ponds for fishing," according to MickandKarla W., who stayed at Shawnee Forest Campground.
Limestone hiking: Deer Ridge Campground at Ferne Clyffe State Park offers direct trail access to unique rock formations. "Short trail leads from campground to the limestone cliffs. Once darkness hit the fireflies in the forest were magnificent!" shares Stephanie S.
What campers like
Direct trail connections: Campers appreciate sites with immediate trail access for riders. "Great covered spots, trails to and from the campground all across the park, great personnel, accessibility throughout the park," notes Hannah S. about Deer Ridge Campground.
Wildlife viewing: Giant City State Park Campground provides excellent opportunities for nature observation. "We stayed Easter Weekend here in the campground and had a great time. The campground is clean and maintained... While you are here, check out the Lodge for dinner one night and climb to the top of the water tower observation deck for some amazing views!" advises Shana D.
Seasonal firefly displays: Summer camping brings natural light shows at specific locations. "Once darkness hit the fireflies in the forest were magnificent!" reports Stephanie S. about Deer Ridge Campground's summer evenings.
What you should know
Site availability patterns: Crab Orchard Lake operates on a first-come, first-served basis with limited sites. "The biggest thing about this campground is first come first serve..and one loop is closed for renovations. Most you can spend here is 14 days, which lots of locals do," explains camper Never Sitting S.
Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds require preparation for uneven terrain. "Our site was not level and with all the rain we had, there were water puddles at the steps," reports MickandKarla W. about their Shawnee Forest experience.
Trail marking inconsistency: Navigation can be difficult without proper preparation. "My only complaint is the trails in this park are not clearly marked and they do not offer maps you can take with you," mentions Hannah H. about Equestrian Campground at Ferne Clyffe.
Tips for camping with families
Primitive camping options: Dutchman Lake Camp provides quiet, secluded sites for families seeking more natural surroundings. "We pulled in around midnight and left at 8 am. There's a large turnaround that could fit many vehicles... Very peaceful! No bugs," reports Katie B.
Cabin alternatives: When weather turns challenging, consider cabin options with amenities. "We spent 5 nights on Site A5 at Crab Orchard Campground. Showers and restrooms are nice. Ones in Loop A are not new (Loop Bs are new) but still nice. Lots of hot water," notes Tracie E.
Beginner-friendly trails: Look for shorter loops suitable for young riders or hikers. "The Giant City Nature Trail and Devils Standtable were really pretty, easy strolls. The Trillium Trail is a little more rugged for those who prefer less crowded, slightly tougher trails," suggests Shana D.
Tips from RVers
Hookup variations: Little Lusk Trail Lodge & Campground provides specialized accommodations for horse owners with RVs. "Bring your horses, or just come and camp and stay in the lodge. Campsites are spacious and can accommodate very large rigs. High lines behind sites. Stalls can be reserved. Some sites are full hookup," explains dana W.
Site selection strategy: When booking at Shawnee Forest Campground, request specific site areas. "There are some nice sites in this CG but we were not offered one of the better ones even though there were plenty of sites open in the upper 26-50 site area. If we come back, we'll know where to ask for a site," advises MickandKarla W.
Water access planning: Many campgrounds require filling tanks before setting up. "They have electric sites, and water is available but you need to fill your tank before setting up camp. Sites are flat and most are pull through," notes Joel R. about Giant City State Park.
