Best RV Parks & Resorts near Ava, IL

Several RV parks near Ava, Illinois provide full hookup sites for motorhomes and travel trailers. Archway RV Park in Mount Vernon offers year-round access with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups for RVs. Marion Campground & RV Park features big-rig friendly sites with full hookups, while Perryville RV Resort By Rjourney accommodates large motorhomes with both 30 and 50-amp service options. Randolph County State Recreation Area provides electric, water, and sewer connections in a more natural setting approximately 20 miles from Ava. Most parks maintain gravel pads with varying degrees of levelness and spacing between sites. "Spots are intermingled in the trees and it is spectacular in the morning, but spots are tight - wouldn't want to be here when the park is full," noted one visitor about Perryville.

Highway proximity affects the camping experience at several locations, with interstate noise mentioned in multiple reviews. Dump stations are available at Archway RV Park, Randolph County State Recreation Area, and The Landing Point RV Park, though some smaller facilities lack this service. Cell coverage varies throughout the region with Goatey Goat Ranch reporting usable Verizon and T-Mobile service. Most parks permit pets but require them to be leashed and supervised. Winter camping options exist at several parks, though amenities may be reduced during off-season months. Advance reservations are recommended during summer weekends and fall foliage season when occupancy rates increase significantly. A recent review noted that at certain parks, "sites are on a hill so it makes it difficult to park an RV or camper," suggesting travelers should inquire about site grading when booking.

Kaskaskia Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam (formerly the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam

    Hidden gem

This is a very clean campground with electric only hook-up. It had nice big concrete pads, a large picnic table and large fire pit/grill at each site. Water was available close to the restrooms and is accessible to fill campers. Parking area at each site could accommodate two vehicles. The capsites were located next to the Kaskaskia River. There is a recreation area with a large pavilion and fishing is accessible from here. By the camping area there is a hiking trail through the woods that ends at the confluence of the Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers. This trail is paved for walking, bicycles and wheelchairs. There is also a boat ramp close to campsites.

There is a playground, and boat ramp. The park has hunting, fishing, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, hiking and boating. there is a golf course nearby and a lodge. Rend Lake is well-known for crappie, particularly in the early spring, as well as largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill.

    Shawnee Forest Campground

    EV Car Camping

I’m a novice car camper, sleeping in my Tesla Model 3. This campground is quiet and clean. The host is very friendly and knowledgeable. Each site has 50 amp electric service (so you can charge your EV with a NEMA 14-50 plug), fresh water, fire pits, and picnic tables. A nice stop to visit the Shawnee National Forest.

    South Sandusky Campground

    5 Star COE

Using your GPS of choice, you can reach this campground off I-57 via Benton or the IL-154/Sesser exit. The area includes both North Sandusky and South Sandusky COE campgrounds, clearly marked and easy to find. We arrived around 2:00 PM and found the check-in gate closed, but since we had a reservation, we proceeded directly to our back-in site 123 with full hookups. Most sites here offer water and electric (50/30/20 AMP), while the Dogwood loop features several full hookup sites in its upper section. Note that the loop has low-sloping ditches on both sides of the road, so precise backing is needed to land on the asphalt pad. There’s one full hookup pull-through site in the Dogwood loop—a long, slightly curved pad with sewer and power connections on the yard side, and water on the standard side. Both North and South Sandusky COE campgrounds offer a wide variety of site types, including lake views, varying utility setups, and well-spaced sites. Paved bike trails run throughout the area. We've been coming here for years, and this campground remains one of our favorites close to home.

    Marion Campground & RV Park

Would come back as a last resort...

This is a stop-over type of campground. The sites are very close together with no privacy. There are some pull-thru sites, which is convenient. It is right next to interstate 57, so unless you're inside your camper, you'll definitely be listening to the highway. This is a pet-friendly campground, and they have a little dog park. They have a shower/laundry facility which is also convenient, especially if you're out on a big trip. Overall, it's certainly not a bad campground, but the highway noise really bothered us.

Guide to Ava

Most RV sites near Ava, Illinois are situated on gravel pads with varying terrain challenges. The region sits within the southern Illinois hill country, where elevations range from 400-600 feet and summer temperatures typically reach 85-95°F with high humidity. Campgrounds in this area experience notable seasonal occupancy changes, with fall foliage season drawing the largest crowds to camping areas around Ava.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Randolph County State Recreation Area, the 65-acre lake offers good fishing conditions year-round. "Great Lake to fish and plenty of trails to hike. Looks like the rv site can get booked up on weekends," notes one visitor who appreciates the outdoor activities available.

Hiking trails: The trail system at Pyramid State Recreation Area provides walking paths through diverse terrain. A visitor mentioned, "We spent about 4 hours just taking every little trail we could and couldn't have been happier." The park contains multiple lakes accessible via walking paths.

Dog-friendly areas: Several campgrounds feature dedicated pet areas where dogs can exercise. Archway RV Park includes "a nice doggie park area fenced off too!!" according to one reviewer. Similarly, The Landing Point RV Park offers "a nice fenced in area for dogs to run and play at."

What campers like

Shade coverage: The mature trees at Perryville RV Resort By Rjourney provide natural cooling during hot summer days. As one camper observed, "There are a ton of big trees and it is really shady. We love our time here." This shade feature is particularly valuable during summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 85°F.

Concrete pads: Some RV parks offer concrete parking surfaces rather than gravel. A visitor to The Landing Point RV Park noted, "Large sites with level concrete. Staff is helpful and friendly." These concrete pads remain stable during rain events that can turn gravel sites muddy.

Morning atmosphere: Early risers appreciate the natural setting at certain parks. One visitor to Perryville RV Resort mentioned, "Spots are intermingled in the trees and it is spectacular in the morning." Wildlife viewing opportunities are often best during early morning hours.

What you should know

Highway noise levels: Most RV parks in the region experience road noise due to proximity to major highways. A reviewer at Marion Campground & RV Park reported, "It is right next to interstate 57, so unless you're inside your camper, you'll definitely be listening to the highway." This noise continues throughout the night but diminishes somewhat after 10pm.

Site spacing: Many campgrounds feature closely positioned sites. "The sites are very close together with no privacy," notes one camper about Marion Campground. Similarly, another visitor mentioned about Randolph County Recreation Area: "The RV sites are very close together, so don't expect privacy or quiet days/evenings at least in the Pine Ridge campground."

Cell service quality: Mobile reception varies significantly between locations. At Goatey Goat Ranch, visitors report "usable Verizon and T-Mobile service" throughout the property. Another reviewer at The Landing Point mentions maintaining consistent cellular data connections despite rural location.

Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Several campgrounds provide play equipment for children. At Archway RV Park, "There is a nice playground and dog park as well as a pond at the location," according to one reviewer who visited with family.

Swimming options: During hot summer months, pool access becomes important. A visitor noted Perryville RV Resort has "a new swimming pool in this past summer. I did not try it but it looked nice." Additionally, one reviewer mentioned, "Water park close by (5 minute drive) that was great for the kids on a hot day" near The Landing Point RV Park.

Recreational equipment: Beyond standard playground equipment, some parks offer unique activities. One visitor to Perryville noted they have a "giant trampoline looked like it would be my daughters favorite thing if she were with us." These additional amenities provide entertainment options during extended stays.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds feature sloped sites requiring leveling equipment. At Randolph County State Recreation Area, a visitor observed "Tight spots and harsh back up angles. Only 3 paved spots." Bringing leveling blocks is recommended for most area campgrounds.

Power adapter needs: Different electrical service types exist across campgrounds. An RVer at Archway RV Park noted, "Full-hookups with only a 50amp connection so if you are using 30 make sure you have a 50/30 adapter." Most RV parks offer 50-amp service, but adapter equipment may be necessary.

Arrival timing: For easier navigation, arrival during daylight hours is recommended. "Check in was quick and easy. We had chose site A-1 when we made our reservations. However, after we got there we found site A-1 was very muddy from the recent rain. We were offered several sites in the A row and chose site A-2," reported a visitor to Cape Camping & RV Park, highlighting the benefit of arriving with enough daylight to evaluate site conditions.
