The park's location provides convenient access to nearby veterinary services in Winder, with Walmart and restaurants just minutes away should campers need pet supplies. Fort Yargo State Park Campground

    Relaxation in The Woods

Fort Yargo is in the Winder Ga area and is close to Helen, Jefferson, Athens and Atlanta. Entering the campground is a nice paved road and leads to tent camping, cabins, yurts and RV sites.

Very clean park and has Historical area, playground, tennis court, bike and hike trails. Not to mention beach and boating area.

Picnics, camping, boating biking and camping or just day use areas. Pet friendly and all around great park.

There is a small general store, but you are so close to everything if you need it, it's there.

Gread for the Georgia Bulldog crowd as its less then 30 minutes!

    I recommend this park highly.

    North Shore Landing

    Gem of a place

Being next to railroad tracks it has a railroad motif you can actually stay in a renovated caboose. If that’s not your thing there’s plenty of tent sites, cabins, RVs, and RV sites just a few of the many amenities are the activity center, the swimming pool, beach access to Lake Oconee ,laundromat, and dog park. There’s also plenty of helpful stuff ready to drive you down to the pool or continually working on upkeep of the property very nice. We were just passing through but I have no problem staying here again. Wonderful place.

    North Shore Landing

    Beautiful Lake and Friendly People

Located on Lake Oconee, North Shore Landing is a KOA/TRA campground. There is a dock to fish from, and a boat launch if you want to go out. There's some very large catfish in the lake, 30+ lbs. There's also bass, blue gill and crappie. The campground is per friendly, full hook-up, with WiFi (pay for premium). There is a pool, clubhouse and 24 hour laundry that's $3 per load, w&d. There's a dog park, basketball and cornhole. Propane fill and dump station.

    Stone Mountain Park Campground

So close to me and I love it.

Lived in Georgia my whole life and yet my first time to Stone Mountain was literally three years ago. Now we have an annual pass and go all the time. This place is world renowned for its fireworks and laser show but you have to go off the pavement to truly fall in love with Stone Mountain! This place is great for everyone. I mean everyone, from free runners to hikers and all you folk that like to “camp” in your RVs. Visit this place anytime of year and you will not be disappointed. Apparently it’s rated #1 as the best place to camp in Georgia. I’m more into the nature only kind of camping but that’s not everyone’s cup a tea. Stone Mountain has something for everyone.

    Shady Grove Campground

    Great views

We are at spot 97 and was suppose to get 44. The host at the front office gave us a different spot that would be easier access to our 40ft 5th wheel. The view is fantastic. We brought 2 dogs which they enjoyed the scenery. They are firm on making sure pet owners have their leash on and do not free roam. A lot of deer just walking around. Bathrooms are in good shape. We plan on staying a week. No Wi-Fi so we are using hotspots on our cells. We have Verizon and showing 2 bar LTE.

    Stone Mountain Park Campground

Awesome grounds with basic to full-hookups. Pet friendly.

Awesome grounds in a family and pet friendly atmosphere. Neighbors were kind and helpful. Very quiet and peaceful time. Walking the grounds was nice and hilly. There’s also trails in between areas and around the campground. If you like the water, bring your trunks, kayaks, and poles.

    Wesley Oaks RV Park

    Expensive + additonal fees

925 per month regardless of class size. 400 dollar security deposit plus a 50 dollar pet rent every month. Apartments charge less for security deposits+ pet rent (especially this high!) is something I’ve yet to hear of for an RV park. For a small 30 amp camper van, it’s just not justifiable to pay the same price as a big rig.

Guide to Winder

Fort Yargo State Park offers year-round camping on 1,816 acres with a 260-acre lake that provides swimming, boating, paddling, and fishing opportunities. The campground sits within the rolling Piedmont region of Georgia at approximately 850 feet elevation, creating a mix of hardwood forests and open water vistas. The park's campground facilities include both newly renovated and primitive options with varying levels of access to hiking and mountain biking trail systems.

What to Do

Mountain biking trails: Fort Yargo State Park features extensive biking opportunities with both inner and outer loop trails. "Great swimming and hiking," notes Barbara C., who gave the park five stars, highlighting the diverse recreation options.

Kayaking and paddleboarding: The walk-in campsites at Fort Yargo State Park provide excellent water access. "The 12 walk-in sites are waterfront to the lake - perfect for kayaking or paddle boarding," says Amalia K., who recommends these sites for those wanting privacy without a long hike.

Disc golf course: Don Carter State Park offers additional activities beyond water recreation. "There is disc golf, nature programs, gift shop, putt-putt golf, playgrounds, hiking, mountain biking, and a 260-acre lake," reports Nancy W., detailing the variety of options for campers.

Geocaching adventures: Hard Labor Creek State Park includes geocaching opportunities throughout the property. "There's all kind of activities for the kids," notes Harvey B., mentioning the free transportation within Stone Mountain Park that makes accessing different areas convenient.

What Campers Like

Spacious sites: Many campers praise the generous spacing between sites. "Site 7 is separate from the others and has the whole point except there is a trail behind the site," Christine notes about Don Carter State Park, highlighting the privacy available at select sites.

Walk-in sites for privacy: For campers seeking seclusion, walk-in sites offer a good compromise. "If you're like me and appreciate a bit of privacy when camping, the walk-in campsites at Fort Yargo are the place to go," explains Amalia K. "Just a short 1-2 minutes walk from your car and bathrooms, but you feel much more secluded than the campsites in the regular campground."

Waterfront access: Hard Labor Creek State Park offers excellent lake views and fishing opportunities. "Almost all the campsites are on Lake Lanier, some are heavily wooded with beautiful views and nice lake breezes," Peter N. shares about the scenic setting.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained comfort stations. "The bath houses/comfort stations are brand new (including laundry rooms) and the camp hosts keep them spotless!" George & Patty C. note about Hard Labor Creek State Park's recent upgrades.

What You Should Know

Site selection matters: Not all sites offer the same advantages. "There are premium lake side sites, but we stayed in a normal site for $38/night, plus the $5 GA state parks entry fee," Laura M. reports about Fort Yargo State Park, noting the price difference.

Alcohol policies vary: Some parks strictly enforce no-alcohol rules. "No warning, I couldn't believe what happened," Rick B. shares about Shady Grove Campground, where rangers issued tickets for alcohol consumption that resulted in $280 fines and mandatory court appearances.
