Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

    Long way from nowhere

Expect a long travel to this remote site.   It’s a couple miles of reasonably decent dirt roads to get there, after several miles of remote highways. The only designated dark sky site in Florida.   It does not disappoint for night sky viewing.   If you’re camping here, please be courteous and keep your outdoor lights to a minimum.  The night sky’s are just breathtaking.   Check www.spotthestation.nasa.gov to see if you’ll get a glimpse of the space station while your there.   Hiking/biking trails are plentiful.   Be aware that there’s a LOT of loose sand.   So even on a mountain bike you’ll have to walk now and then.   Great birding.  Crested cara cara are frequent as are flocks of turkey strolling through the campsites.   Be sure to head out the road you came in back to the first turn and take the trail to the left (as you’re leaving).   There’s a gator hole just 1/4 mile down the trail.  Nature trail is a nice hammock view.  No pets on that particular trail.

There are 2 camp loops only the first camp loop has a bath house, which is very nice.   The equestrian camp has porta potties.  Many of those folks drive over to the bathhouse.  Even the bathhouse has outdoor red lights.

    Tent folk: bring earplugs

Arrived here for a three-night tent stay at spot 153. The campground is easily accessible from the highway, and a breeze to check in. Friendly staff. Dumpsters behind the main office. All roads are one-way counterclockwise. The bathroom and laundry room are about 100 meters from spot 153. Both are clean. There's a nice pavilion overlooking the water inside the eastern loop. There's a good size, fenced-in, leash-free dog park next to the water. The water views are beautiful at sunrise. There's a pier for fishing and just serene eastern observation toward Cape Canaveral. There's a kayak launch ramp as well.

Spot 153 was perfectly partially shaded, with a mix of sand and grass, and it was level. The only critters seen here are playful squirrels. RV spots can be quite close to each other, but not many of their inhabitants were seen outside during these chilly, mid-December days when the temperature dipped to 40F at night, and high 50's in the day. All spots have electric and picnic table. The water spigot at 153 was about two inches from the ground. Why?

The only downside of the campground is its proximity to railroad tracks and airport. The noise seemed to be constant on weekdays.

    Lake Kissimmee State Park Campground

    Peaceful & Beautiful Spot

We got into this site with a last minute cancellation over Labor Day weekend. It was a beautiful location! We had site 43 which was secluded from neighbors and in full shade. The back of the site opened to an open field and we constantly saw deer walking through the grounds. We also saw many armadillos and turkey! Site had water and electric as well as a fire pit and picnic bench. Each loop has a bathhouse and laundry unit. Sewage dump was clean and easy. Campground also has a general store with some essentials, snacks, WiFi and live bait. There’s water for fishing and a cleaning station, although we didn’t catch anything you could see the fish jumping constantly. There’s plenty of trails and an observation tower. We will be back!

Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

    Awesome stargazing and wildlife

If you love camping, wildlife, and stargazing but still want the convenience of amenities (i.e electricity, running water, bathroom, shower) then this is the place for you.

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park is part of IDA International Dark-Sky Places. The park has little light pollution and also a stargazing pad where you can also camp on.

The campgrounds aren't large but the campsites are good for tents and RVs. The one site we stayed at had water and electric hook-ups and a firepit. We were close to very clean restroom area that also had showers, washer and dryer. They do have primitive campsites for the more rustic individuals. The campgrounds are about 45 minutes from town, but the ranger station sells ice for $2.50 and firewood purchase is by honor system. We also saw other campers with their dogs so pet-friendly as well.

Lots of hiking trails and so much wildlife. We saw deer grazing near our campsite!

Make sure to bring lots of mosquito repellent, especially in the summer months. Otherwise you'll get bit...a lot! But it is Florida after all.

Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

    Simple and well maintained

Our visit was relaxing and enjoyable. We visited in July and the shade from all the trees around our site helped keep the heat tolerable. The camp site’s aren’t dispersed and a little close together but we didn’t have any immediate neighbors around us so it was perfect. We stayed on site 008 and it was spacious enough for our large cabin tent, picnic table, additional table, dog pool, chairs, etc. Our site is conveniently close to the bathrooms. I liked that there is only one main dumpster and it’s kept a distance from the camp sites. I think this helped keep any raccoons that may have been around away from the campers. AMAZING star gazing location.

Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo

    River Ranch RV Resort

You can get a RV site through Westgate which is more of a field or through River Ranch RV Resort which has full hook-ups. We stayed on a waterfront site at River Ranch RV Resort and it was perfect! We were able to fish right off the dock at our site, there was a fit pit and grill, as well as seating outside (each site could be configured differently). At Westgate River Ranch (walking distance from our site but still got a golf cart) we went to the rodeo on Saturday night, did a swamp buggy ride, skeet shooting, petting zoo and rode a mechanical bull... and there was still more we could have done but ran out of time since we still wanted to relax some 🙃 If you're looking for a great site with tons of activities available River Ranch RV Resort is the place for you!

    Manatee Hammock Campground

    Watched Space launch here

We were here for 6 days. Watched Space X Crew 2 launch today. Good view across the water. Campground is nice. Stayed in Site 125. Plenty of room for our 2 golden retriever dogs. Some sites larger than others and some more close than we like. Full hookups. Checking was easy. Have some street lights. Nice bathroom facilities and showers. Very clean. Laundry 🧺 on site as well. Have a fenced dog area for off leash. Nice pier too. Dogs swam in the water too. Most sites had shade. Good central location for sites around to see. Saw a few manatees, crabs, fish and house shoe crabs too around the pier. Definitely would come again.

    Vero Beach Kamp

    Resting up for the Keys

Desperate for a place to pitch our tent rather than spending $$$ for a hotel, we lucked up when we found VBK on The Dyrt. This quiet campground lined with moss covered oaks, palm trees and long leaf pines was a dream. They are set up mostly for RVs but have a few campsites. Our primitive campsite was at the far back. Large, Quiet, shady and near a water source. We ended up sharing the site with another very pleasant family. Heated pool, nice restroom and laundry facilities. I didn’t have a chance to check out the activities room with bocce ball, shuttle board and horseshoes. It was great being able to camp on our way to Bahia Honda State Park. No hotel for us!

    Manatee Hammock Campground

Small, clean and beautiful water views

26 acres, small campground; most sites are relatively close to each other; lots of trees and shade; beautiful water views from several campsites, specially sites 51, 13, 65-69, 169, 170), pool and lots of parks within 30 minutes of Manatee Hammock.  Downside is freight train noise every night in the early morning hours and traffic noise, specially with campsites near the busy US-1.  Also, no fires unless you bring your own fire pit and must be at least 6" off the ground.

Guide to Melbourne

Camping around Melbourne, Florida offers a mix of natural preserves, prairie landscapes, and water-based recreation within 60 miles of the Space Coast. Summer temperatures range from 85-95°F with high humidity, while winter averages 60-75°F, making October through April the prime camping season. The area features both coastal and inland camping opportunities with sites typically $25-65 per night depending on hookups and location.

What to do

Launch viewing spots: For optimal rocket launch viewing, Manatee Hammock Campground in Titusville provides clear sightlines across the Indian River. "We saw two rocket launches while here. Make sure you visit Port Canaveral and eat at the many excellent restaurants," shares Dave D. The campground's waterfront location creates perfect viewing opportunities.

Stargazing experiences: Kilpatrick Hammock Campground offers Florida's only designated dark sky viewing site. "The night sky was pretty dark but I couldn't see the Milky Way (there was a half moon during my stay)... Overall a very well maintained campground with lots of wildlife and a nice dark sky," reports Monte W. The preserve has minimal light pollution for optimal astronomical viewing.

Water recreation: Fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing opportunities abound at Lake Kissimmee State Park. "Nice spot to just get away and relax. Lots of hiking trails and some wildlife. Deers all around even among the campsites. Some tours available close by for airboats," notes Robert T. The lake provides excellent bass fishing conditions year-round.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Vero Beach Kamp offers well-shaded sites with room to spread out. "Large, Quiet, shady and near a water source. We ended up sharing the site with another very pleasant family. Heated pool, nice restroom and laundry facilities," writes Denise K. Sites include full hookups with concrete pads.

Wildlife encounters: River Ranch RV Resort provides opportunities to see native Florida animals in their natural habitat. "We had a beautiful spot in Phase 5, on the canal. The critters weren't awful, very serene sunrises/sunsets and spacious spots," describes Brooke M. Morning and evening hours offer the best wildlife viewing.

Clean facilities: Cape Kennedy RV Resort maintains well-kept amenities according to campers. "I've stayed at this campground many times never had a bad experience. Staff is wonderful if you ever need anything all you do is ask. They're right on top of it. Clean sites level sites. Even the tent camping is level and clean," reports Dan B.

What you should know

Train noise concerns: At Manatee Hammock Campground, be prepared for occasional nighttime disturbances. "The only downside of the campground is its proximity to railroad tracks and airport. The noise seemed to be constant on weekdays," mentions L O. Bringing earplugs is recommended for tent campers.

Seasonal booking requirements: Melbourne-area yurt camping and glamping options fill quickly in winter months. Book 6-9 months ahead for peak season stays at popular locations like Westgate River Ranch Resort. "We stayed for 2 nights over a weekend. The campsites are very well kept but note that they are not full hookups as they don't have sewer systems," advises Ilena R.

Remote locations: Some campgrounds require advance preparation with supplies. "Expect a long travel to this remote site. It's a couple miles of reasonably decent dirt roads to get there, after several miles of remote highways," warns David G. about Kilpatrick Hammock Campground. Cell service can be limited in prairie preserves.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Boggy Creek Resort & RV Park offers airboat rides and wildlife viewing opportunities. "There is an abundance of wildlife including Sand Hill Cranes... Peacocks (which was an unexpected sight, but very enjoyable), Herons, Tortoises, and Alligators," reports Cindy W. The resort's location on East Lake Tohopekaliga provides water recreation options.

Safety considerations: Keep children within sight at water-adjacent campgrounds. "We tent camped in the Equestrian loop, and the sites were decently spaced with plenty of room for our two tents, two cars, and 8 campers to spread out without bothering the neighbors," shares Roxxy G. about camping at Kilpatrick Hammock.

Entertainment options: Plan for both daytime activities and evening entertainment when selecting yurt camping near Melbourne, Florida. "We went during Spring Break! We took our two grandchildren, and they had a lot of fun! It was fantastic!" exclaims Lauren W. about Lake Kissimmee State Park Campground.

Tips from RVers

Hookup limitations: Note that not all campgrounds offer full hookups. "Sites are a little tight and park is open to none campers, but otherwise no complaints (and really those aren't a big deal). Decent rates, full hook ups, great location, friendly staff, clean bathhouse, and beautiful views of the Indian River," explains Nathan A. about Manatee Hammock.

Off-season advantages: Joy RV Park in Cocoa offers good value during summer months. "Joy is a nice campground, clean, quiet, saw 2 nasa launches from our site. No frills, but a decent place. Staff was very nice," writes Paul about the park's basic but functional amenities.

Site selection strategy: Consider your specific needs when booking. "We booked last minute in January for an overnight stay with a 25ft RV. They were able to accommodate us. Majority of guests are here for long term. They all made us newbies feel very welcome. Paid 55$ for full hook-up," shares Annabel F. about staying at Manatee Hammock Campground.
