Best Cabin Camping near Cortez, FL

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several state parks and private campgrounds near Cortez, Florida provide furnished cabin rentals with varying amenities. Myakka River State Park offers air-conditioned cabins with kitchens, bathrooms, and comfortable sleeping arrangements. According to one visitor, "The cabins are off the main path, tucked away and private. They are super roomy and comfortable with their own picnic tables and grills." The St. Petersburg-Madeira Beach KOA Holiday features deluxe cabins equipped with fresh linens, full kitchens, and private patios with grills and fire rings. These cabins overlook Long Bayou and provide a comfortable base for exploring the area. Oscar Scherer State Park and Little Manatee River State Park also offer cabin accommodations with electricity, running water, and basic furnishings.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Most state park cabins require advance reservations, especially during winter months when bookings can fill up 11 months ahead. At Myakka River State Park, the cabins were originally built with palm logs by the Civilian Conservation Corps and have since been rebuilt with modern amenities while maintaining their rustic charm. The KOA cabins come in different layouts and sizes to accommodate various group needs. Pet policies vary by location - Canoe Outpost Little Manatee River allows pets "as long as your pup isn't running around the whole property," while some waterfront cabins at Oscar Scherer State Park are designated as no-pet areas.

Most cabins include basic kitchen equipment, but visitors should verify what's provided before arrival. Myakka River State Park cabins feature full kitchens with cooking utensils, while more rustic options may only offer outdoor grills or fire rings. Bedding and linens are included in KOA deluxe cabins but may need to be brought to state park accommodations. All cabin locations provide access to shared bathhouses with showers and toilets. For groceries and supplies, the St. Petersburg-Madeira Beach KOA has "a super Walmart nearby so you can stock up," and Myakka River State Park features an on-site store with basic provisions. Visitors staying in more remote cabins should bring all necessary food and supplies, as options may be limited once inside the parks.

Palmetto Ridge Campground — Myakka River State Park

    Enormous park

I’m staying in the Palmetto Ridge loop which is the only paved loop & I think the only one w/sewer. The Big Flats & Old Prairie loops are gravel road, tight, no privacy & very small sites like for popups, vans or small campers. The Palmetto Ridge pull thrus are gigantic. I would say the vegetation gives semi privacy but they aren’t on top of each other so it’s not like you’re looking right at your neighbor. There is a picnic table & a fire ring. Gravel sites but pretty level. My site was 50 amp. Not sure how many are. Bath house & laundry facility appears clean. Pet friendly. The outpost is literally like 3 miles into the park down from the entrance & Palmetto loop. The store was nice & there was a food truck. It was a little spendy but good food. The river was low so the kayak rental & boat tours were shut down. Tons of great hiking & even some elevated bridges for site seeing. Tons of gators, birds, deer etc. There is also a scenic drive in the park, a “fisherman’s loop” & a few picnic areas. There are cabins to rent but I didn’t see them. Also never saw a playground if you have kids. Very dark & quiet at night.

    Canoe Outpost Little Manatee River

Decent spot. If you want privacy and primitive, it’s not the spot

So I grew up camping a lot and like to be more primitive/ private. The campsites are close together, with little privacy. It’s also located right off the highway, so you get all the noise. All day and all night.

Now, for canoe and kayak trips, I guess it’s a good spot. There’s a lot of folk that come just for that. The staff is very friendly. They drive around maybe once a couple of hours. They are pet friendly. A long as your pup isn’t running around the whole property. I’m pretty sure every site has water and electricity.

    St. Petersburg-Madeira Beach KOA Holiday

Natural Spot Hidden in the City

I recently had a wonderful experience at the St. Petersburg/Madeira Beach KOA Holiday, and I’m excited to share my positive review! I’ve hosted friends in their Deluxe Cabins before, and they were thoroughly impressed. The cabins were equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay—fresh linens, a full kitchen, and even a private patio with a grill and fire ring. And they had a great view of the lush mangrove lined Long Bayou.

They loved the blend of cozy and convenient, making their getaway truly enjoyable. At the end of the road driving out of this campground is a great restaurant called Doe Doe's that makes a delicious homestyle breakfast if you don't want to cook it yourself.

Wanting to be close to them I opted for one of the small tent sites at the end of the park where I car camped in my Subaru Outback. It was a peaceful and charming spot, perfect for a relaxing camping experience - and away from more of the centrally located activities that people camping with children enjoy.

Overall, the amenities were top-notch, including the heated outdoor pool, bike and kayak rentals, and clean and large facilities. They have something called KampK9 which is a fenced in dog park area. Less than a mile away is Bay Pines Park which is nice to jog or ride your bike through and there is also a super Walmart nearby so you can stock up for your drive to the next campground. You also have easy access to the Gulf Coast's stunning beaches and the scenic Pinellas Trail.

Driving on the main road, and seeing the somewhat industrial area you pass through on your way down the small side street to this campground, you wouldn't expect much - but this KOA has been there for decades and is one of the nicest family campgrounds in the middle of a city I have experienced.

Palmetto Ridge Campground — Myakka River State Park

Not the Florida you imagine about when you think Florida...

Hidden cabins, hiking, off-road biking, boating, wildlife...so much beauty and activities to enjoy in this park! The cabins are off the main path, tucked away and private. They are super roomy and comfortable with their own picnic tables and grills. You can launch canoes/kayaks or book a trip on the boats in the park. If you like off-road biking there are several nice trails. Really family-friendly!

Little Manatee River State Park Campground

    A lovely state park

Really enjoyed our stay here, good size lot, #10, with electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. Clean dump station. Natural trees providing privacy between lots. A lot of walking trails for people and horses. A surprise was the amphitheater. Washers and dryers are located outside the bathrooms. Friendly hosts and other campers. Would came again.

    Oscar Scherer State Park Campground

    Nice woodsy Campground

We stayed in site # 98 which was very private, we had water & electric, picnic table & fire pit. Clean restrooms, a nature center, kayak launch & kayak rentals, a small lake you can swim in and some hiking trails. There are some really nice sites #19, 17 near the lake, in our loop #86 is the biggest but you have to have 2 water hoses to reach the hook up (they just updated some things in the park they may have corrected this but not sure). There is water behind the site you can fish back there. Sites #44, 45, 50, 75, and 73 are all good.

We kayaked, swam in the lake, went to Nokomas Beach & Venice beach, Venice Rookery, it's a nice area to visit.

We did have some interesting neighbors who got thrown out after 6 hours of honking their horn & yelling crazy stuff but they escorted them out & they are not allowed back in.

Restrooms near us were small but very clean. We will go back it's a great campground.

Little Manatee River State Park Campground

    So much to offer!

What an amazing State Park - they have multiple camping options. Equestrian, Car/RV camping and there is a back country site on a 7 mile loop trail that runs part of the way along the river.

The Car/RV camping spots are roomy, somewhat private. bathrooms are clean, almost always have camp hosts available.

Access to the back country loop trail and camping is just down the road. Reservations are required and you check in at main gate. camp is about 4 miles in on trail if hiking counter clockwise. There is a space for fire and picnic table at site. This is a nice place for beginner backpackers to try out. Sadly just through the tree line is a golf course and housing community. Note: resident raccoon is very large - you must hang your secure food and trash! You can see lights through the trees at night and hear the lawn equipment in the mornings. This can be comforting to first timers though. The hike along the river is just beautiful.

Equestrian camping group camping area offers 4 sites has stalls and other amenities for horse camping. fire pits and picnic tables. There are 12 miles of trails in the state park

There is also a primitive group camping site for scouts and other similar organizations.

There are many ranger and local outfitter activities and seasonally there are offered full moon horseback and kayak trips that allow you to see the area in a "different light"

Fishing is available also on the river, The "lake" is man made and has little to offer for those wanting a catch.

Make sure you book your reservation early as this park fills up fast!

Little Manatee River State Park Campground

    Quiet peaceful Spot no no

This has been our first park Campground and couldn’t ask for a better one to start with. We arrived an hour sooner then the check in time and it was already available so no need to wait. The fire ring was clean as well as the RV spot. Rangers were very helpful getting us around and renting the canoes. Very private and spacious spot for Big Rigs as well as the medium size.. The equestrian rentals were very nice also. The bathrooms and showers are under construction and are located at spots from 1 thru 4 so if wanting more privacy 6 and up are for me much better. Our spot was 10 and we loved the privacy of the nature between every campsite along those areas for bigger rigs. The River is really nice for canoeing as well as for fishing and nature views. Hopefully we find again a spot to come again this year. Clean, well organized and well kept facilities and staff

    Oscar Scherer State Park Campground

    Wow, Who Knew?

This was our first visit to Oscar Scherer State Park, why I’m not sure as we only live a few miles away. I literally drive by it whenever I go to the grocery store or ride my bike on the Legacy Trail. I’ve boated past on the Intercoastal Waterway, paddled past on South Creek and flown over in an airplane countless times.

I guess being Sarasota residents I felt I already knew everything about it. I WAS WAY WRONG. This is a fantastic Florida State Park. I can understand now why it is so popular. The facilities are very good considering how many people visit. And it’s not too polished that it doesn’t have that camping or state park vibe. No Disney here.

The campground is very large even for State Park Standards, over 100 sites. Many are along South Creek with water views although they are no pet sites as maybe there are gator issues.

We camped in site#69, the last pet site before the restricted sites along the creek#70- 90. The sites are quite large and private as the campground is mature with lots of native Florida foliage. We didn’t see any evidence of Raccoons or other campground mooches.

Lots of hiking in this park, if you cycle the Legacy Trail built on an old railway doesn’t offer much contour as it is pretty much a strait shot but runs from Sarasota to Venice and from Venice you can take the Venetian Waterway even further. Soon the Legacy Trail will go all the way to downtown Sarasota.

Finally the best part for visitors to the Sarasota area. You will probably not find a State Park as close to the US#1 Rated Beach Siesta Key, just a few miles or Sarasota and all her arts and culture(15 minutes) including The Ringling Museum, Van Wezel Performing Arts Center, St. Armands Circle, Lido Beach, award-winning restaurants, tiki bars, dinner cruises, and more.

In fact as I write this the US Olympic Rowing Trials are going on at Benderson Park about 15 minutes away, next door to the Apple Store. This is no joke the premier rowing facility in the world. And did I mention if you forgot anything there is a Publix about 1/2 mile front the front gate of the park?

OF NOTE: Of all the state parks we have visited, this had the most unfriendly group of campers we have ever encountered. Surly in fact. It was difficult to extract a return greeting of any type.

Perhaps it’s because this isn’t your normal group of happy wanderers, and those who truly enjoy the outdoors. More like COVID refugees or visitors doing“Florida on the Cheep” who have the time and resources to escape those areas of lockdown.

Our first clue was the amount of “resort wear” being donned in lieu of the normal camping duds and the overall lack of activity inside the park for the amount of campsites during the day. Well the park is smack in the middle of a major resort destination and it is high season. This all left the park less crowded for us.

Whatever the reason I hope the park guests can find some joy after all in the blessings that nature gives us no matter what the situation. Life is short. As the late, great Warren Zevon once said“enjoy every sandwich”.

Guide to Cortez

Cabin accommodations near Cortez, Florida range from rustic to modern across several campgrounds and state parks. Most cabins require advance reservations, particularly during winter when availability becomes limited. The area's combination of warm weather and natural surroundings makes cabin camping possible year-round, with amenities varying significantly by location.

What to do

Hiking trails with varying difficulties: Oscar Scherer State Park features numerous trails for nature exploration. "This campground has more to offer then just a few sites. It has so many bikes trails and hikes that kept us occupied all day!" according to Deanna G., who visited the park. The trail system accommodates different skill levels and interests.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Myakka River State Park offers exceptional wildlife viewing from cabin areas. A visitor noted, "We did the nature trail (short), the canopy walk, and also got permits for the wilderness preserve. The hike there is beautiful - about five miles round trip. Feels like the Serengeti - wide open prairie with occasional trees." The park's diverse ecosystems support alligators, deer, and numerous bird species.

Water recreation: Little Manatee River State Park provides excellent paddling opportunities from its rental cabins. "We love it here because we can hike, bike or just relax," shares Linda M. The river offers gentle currents ideal for beginners and families staying in park cabins.

What campers like

Natural separation between sites: Unlike the closely spaced cabins mentioned in other locations, Oscar Scherer State Park offers more secluded cabin options. "Sites have water and electric and are dirt. Most sites are on the smaller side being shallow and narrow. Our site was great. Shaded most of day and wider. Most sites are surrounded by greenery so you are buffered from your neighbor," writes Rachel G.

Water views from select cabins: St. Petersburg-Madeira Beach KOA Holiday features cabins with scenic views. One visitor reported, "We love this place! Great sites on the Intercoastal & good interior sites as well. Bathrooms are modern & clean. Great heated pool & hot tubs." These waterfront cabin rentals provide direct access to fishing and water activities.

Seasonal fresh produce: Bradenton / Hunsader Farms KOA offers a unique cabin camping experience with an on-site farm market. "We enjoyed the produce market, but you could also go in the fields and pick your own," says Jan S. This feature provides cabin campers with fresh food options not available at other parks.

What you should know

Reservation timing considerations: Cabins at popular parks fill quickly during peak seasons. For cabins at Myakka River State Park, one camper notes, "In-Season campsites are often difficult to find. In addition, the lower campground is sometimes flooded out or closed for repairs putting even more pressure on the two campgrounds closer to the main park entrance."

Accessibility and location limitations: Some cabin rentals near Cortez have specific access restrictions. Terry Tomalin Campground cabins have particular rules to be aware of. A visitor cautions, "Please be aware that this is a very restrictive campground. You can only tent and you are not allowed to smoke anything, vape anything, drink anything alcoholic."

Water supply interruptions: Old Prairie Campground occasionally experiences utility issues affecting cabin stays. A recent review warns, "NO WATER since Spring 2024. No boat tours as the river is low. No Bird walkway or Canopy walk." Always check current conditions before booking cabin accommodations.

Tips for camping with families

Recreational facilities: Family-friendly cabin rentals often include additional amenities. St. Petersburg-Madeira Beach KOA provides excellent options for children. Joy H. shares, "Very friendly, helpful staff. This place was always clean and well maintained. They rent bikes and fun little tricycles to ride the trail or use in campground. Nice clean pool and rec center. They even had a movie night at the pool."

Educational opportunities: Myakka River State Park cabins offer learning experiences for children. "Ranger led programs take place nightly. We actually got to see a Florida panther on one of the trails as well as a friendly family of scrub Jay's!" reports Jennifer M., highlighting the educational value for families staying in cabins.

Safety considerations: Canoe Outpost Little Manatee River cabin stays require attention to surroundings. "PROS: lots of trees and shade, near river. CONS: right next to a highway/large road with TONS of traffic noise," warns Kathy L. Families should consider noise levels and proximity to roads when selecting cabin accommodations.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for dual RV/cabin trips: When bringing both an RV and using cabin facilities, site selection matters. At Oscar Scherer State Park, Paul advises, "Some pull through, some back in, water and electric vary by site. Note, gate closed at dusk, call ahead to get the gate code or there is a mile plus hike to find someone with the code."

Water hookup challenges: For those transitioning between RV and cabin stays, David S. notes about Oscar Scherer State Park, "Power and water, but no sewer connections at sites. There is a dump station and dumpsters near the entrance of the camping area."

Wildlife precautions: When switching between RV and cabin accommodations, prepare for local wildlife. Denise from Oscar Scherer State Park shares, "There were armadillos foraging behind the site at night, and a very brave raccoon that didn't seem to care I was shining my flashlight at him or telling him to get leave. I'd also recommend to be very careful with leaving food out."
