Sand, open sky, and the Charles W. Cullen Memorial Bridge define the view at Delaware Seashore State Park Campground, a drive-in facility split across two sides of the Indian River Inlet near Rehoboth Beach. There are no trees here. Sites on both the north and south campgrounds sit in full sun with no shade or wind protection, which matters considerably when coastal gusts pick up, and several reviewers note that high winds can make sitting outside difficult. What the campground trades in shade and privacy, it gives back in direct water access: the Atlantic Ocean, Indian River Bay, and the inlet itself are all within reach on foot or by bike.
The south campground has over 300 sites, a mix of paved hookup pads and sand-and-gravel non-hookup sites, all level and close together. No individual fire rings exist at any site, though communal fire pits are scattered through the park. The north campground is smaller and generally less crowded, with larger sites and a full-service marina nearby featuring a bait and tackle shop and the Indian River Marina Cottages — Delaware Seashore State Park as an alternative lodging option. The Delaware Seashore State Park - North Campground is also separately bookable for those who prefer that side. Bathhouses on both sides are consistently described as clean and well-maintained, and "clean, well maintained bath houses," as Lisa B. puts it, hold up even with heavy summer use.
Fishing draws a significant share of visitors. Anglers work the inlet wall, the surf, and the bay at all hours. The south side has a lifeguarded beach and a restaurant with water views; the north side allows dogs on the beach and connects to the Burton's Island Nature Trail. Dolphin sightings in the inlet and diamondback terrapin wandering through campsites have been reported, including one turtle that crossed directly under a picnic table during a stay.
Reservations are essential and often require months of lead time, especially for north-side waterfront sites. Weekdays are noticeably less crowded than weekends. Tent campers may want to seek out the tent-only loops on the south side, which reviewers describe as less congested than the standard sites that mix tents with small RVs. Eric M. notes that "even with all the people, though, it was mostly quiet," though bridge traffic and the Coast Guard station's bugle calls at dawn are real factors to account for. Rehoboth Beach is roughly 15 minutes by car, and campers interested in campgrounds around Delaware Seashore State Park will find additional options along this stretch of the Delaware coast. This campground suits anglers, beach-goers, and families who prioritize water access over shade, solitude, or a wooded setting.
Description
Located within walking distance of the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware Seashore State Park’s two campgrounds are popular with campers seeking a beach experience. The campgrounds are located on the north and south side of the Indian River Inlet and are connected by a bridge with a separate walking and biking path. Campsites can accommodate a variety of camping units, from tents to large recreational vehicles. Most campsites have 30- and 50-amp electric, and water and sewer hook-ups. Bathhouses and laundry facilities are located in both campgrounds. A camp store on the south side carries convenience items and souvenirs. Amenities and services close to the campgrounds include two restaurants; a full-service marina with a bait and tackle shop, fish and seafood sales, and head boat service; bike and walking trails; and the Indian River Life-Saving Station and gift shop, a must-see. Severe weather may limit availability of some amenities.
