What to do
Beach access: 15-minute drive from Mystic KOA to multiple swimming areas. "We chose Mystic KOA and stayed in a full hook up-50amp pull through site. The campground is close to Mystic Seaport, which was beautiful. We ate Mystic Pizza II at our campsite (right down the road), and visited the adorable town of Groton to eat at Fred's Lobster."
Kayaking: 4-5 mile drive to boat launches from Rocky Neck State Park Campground. "Anyone with kayaks can't easily get to boat launch. It's 4-5 miles by car at 4 mile river boat launch." The park offers both freshwater and saltwater paddling options.
Casino entertainment: 10-30 minutes from most cabin sites. "Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun."
What campers like
Full-service cabin options: Aces High RV Park offers premium sites with concrete pads. "We paid $150/night for a 'Premium Waterfront FHU Site' on the lake. A bit pricey, but really nice site including level concrete pad and patio, clean and well-maintained utilities, and beautiful view."
Budget-friendly cabin alternatives: State park cabins at Burlingame State Park Campground offer lower rates. "Very affordable (around $14 per night). We stayed near the camp store and playground. Lots to do with kids including fishing, game room, and hiking. Bathrooms were clean. No electricity at the sites. Will try a cabin next time."
Seasonal Halloween activities: Special themed events in fall. "We went two years in a row each on Halloween! They had great amenities and activities for the kids. Plus a costume contest and tricker treating. Very enjoyable time. Hope to go back again."
What you should know
Limited tent options at some properties: Some resorts prioritize RVs over tents. "Odetah Camping Resort called us today 24 hours prior to our arrival- after 4 years of camping there- to cancel our site unless we rented an RV and didn't use tents. They think they are kind to still allow tents-a handful of sites on a rocky hill that don't have electricity or water."
Off-season limitations: Pools and activities unavailable before Memorial Day. "I believe we camped there too early in the season to fully enjoy the grounds. The pool, splash pad, and nearly everything else was non operational or locked up still."
Traffic noise varies by location: Highway proximity affects some sites. "You can hear the highway very well at night, particularly in the safari field. There are only a couple of 'primitive' sites here, and I do not recommend those sites because they are very close to the dumpsters."
Tips for camping with families
Choose campground by activity schedule: Strawberry Park offers extensive programming. "Bingo every night, and more activities than you could possibly do! The kids ride their bikes to the sports fields, the rec center for the pool and activities. Oh and my young children LOVE the air pillow, they have spent hours on there."
Consider shower quality: Bathhouse conditions vary widely between properties. "Bathhouses and toilets were not as cleaned as I would have liked but passable. Coronavirus social distancing required."
Check beach proximity: Walking distance varies significantly. "Rocky Neck is a moderate sized state park campground located along a river and offering fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities. The campsite is only a short walk from the beach and available mountain bike and hiking trails."
Tips from RVers
Off-season seclusion: Hopeville Pond State Park Campground offers quieter experience outside summer. "If you are looking for privacy and quiet, I recommend the F Loop. The other loops have sites close together and it is generally quite loud during the day. Quiet hours at night are not strictly enforced so you may hear people up and around until midnight or later."
Test new rigs on short trips: Perfect for maiden voyages. "First time taking out our new Travel Trailer. Staff were friendly/helpful, campsite clean and campers nice."
Consider parking limitations: Some sites restrict vehicle access. "My site was tent only and you couldn't pull your car up to the site so unloading and loading was a hassle. Beach is a short drive on site and the showers were one site over."
