    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Highland Campground

    Older but lots to do

The campground is older, and the roads/driveways need work. For those looking for newer facilities, this isn't the place. There are no 50 amp sites. The rec hall and the bath houses are old, but we don't mind the old fashioned spots at times. Reminds me of camping as a kid. There are a lot of activities for the kids and adults. Shuffleboard, bocci ball, fishing, bingo, playground, pit luck dinners, etc. There is wifi available.

There are a lot of seasonal campers which can sometimes feel like you're intruding on their space. There is a page of rules to follow, the seasonals ignore them.

There is no black water hookup, only gray water. You have to have them clean out the black or dump on the way out.

    Beaver Pines

    Ranger Review: Beaver Pines Campground

Just ok. This is a small family run operation. We stayed 3 nights and that was plenty. We basically used this campground as a base to get out and explore the surrounding area, so in that sense, it was fine. They only had a couple spots open as the entire campground was basically full of long stay campers and cabins. The shower house was in the main home of the owner/operators, which was at times odd (you could hear them talking, cooking etc, so it kind of felt like you were intruding). No sewer hookups . At Check-in they said their son would come to our site and remotely pump our tanks before we left, but that never happened and we didn’t even bother to make a big deal about it. As we were pulling out they apologized saying he came by but we weren’t there 🤷🏻‍♀️ The cabin “resident” next to us had loud dogs that barked at anything that moved outside, so that didn’t make for a peaceful stay. The sites were set up a little weird with the hookups not where it made sense to park. If you had a big rig (40 ft+), I don’t think it would be easy to figure out a solution. We had to wiggle ours around to get in a position to hook our electric up. In a pinch this campground would work, but this is definitely not a campground that I’d recommend for a longer stay. Cell coverage was ok for us to work (att & Verizon).

Guide to Plainville

Plainville, Connecticut camping options sit at approximately 200 feet above sea level in the central Connecticut valley. The area experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F and winter temperatures frequently dropping below freezing. Most campgrounds in the region remain open from April through October, with several facilities offering extended seasons or year-round camping options for RV travelers.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park offers pond fishing just 40 miles from Plainville. "We had a blast fishing and riding their bikes around," notes Megin F., who enjoyed the well-maintained grounds and refreshing pool after fishing sessions.

Explore hiking trails: At Taconic State Park, accessible within a 90-minute drive, campers can access multiple trail networks. "There's a trailhead at the end of the campground that connects to the other trails in Taconic State Park," reports Katherine P., who appreciated the platform camping sites that overlook Rudd Pond.

Visit historic sites: Several state parks and attractions surround the Plainville area, including Old Sturbridge Village. One camper at Thousand Trails Sturbridge mentioned, "Close to Old Sturbridge Village and many cool hikes and MA cities," highlighting the campground's convenient location despite noting limited cell reception.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently appreciate well-maintained bathrooms and showers. At Lake Compounce Campground, one visitor noted, "Restrooms are clean and spacious. Showers are great. Whoever planned this campground is/was a camper." This campground offers electric and water hookups for RVs but lacks sewer connections at individual sites.

Spacious sites: Several rv sites near Plainville, Connecticut offer good separation between campers. At Prospect Mountain Campground, campers enjoy "lots of trees and shade" and waterfront sites. One reviewer mentioned, "Great pool. The sites on the water looked nice- hoping to try for that next time!"

Family activities: Salem Farms Campground provides organized weekend events approximately 50 miles from Plainville. "We felt safe allowing the kids to go ride bikes and go mini golfing. We will definitely be back next year!" reports Tara K., who went tent camping with three other families and appreciated the proximity to the pool and facilities.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the region have limited operating seasons. Prospect Mountain Campground operates from "May 1 to Columbus Day," while Salem Farms Campground runs during the same period. Year-round RV camping options are limited but available at select locations.

Varied cell reception: Connectivity can be inconsistent across campgrounds near Plainville. At Thousand Trails Sturbridge, a camper reported, "Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls." This consideration is important for remote workers needing reliable connections.

Site privacy differences: Site separation varies significantly across campgrounds. At Taconic State Park, one camper noted, "The campsites are pretty close together, so if the campground is full, you are rather close to your neighbors." Consider booking end sites or requesting specific locations when making reservations.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access considerations: When camping with children, choose sites near recreational amenities. At Salem Farms Campground, a grandmother shared: "We tent close to the restroom and the pool, which are very clean. We go mid week and the special is pay 2 nights, get third night free."

Playground proximity: Branch Brook Campground offers sites with playground access. While one reviewer mentioned that "sites are pretty close together," the campground provides "clean pool and laundry areas" that appeared newer, making it convenient for families.

Educational opportunities: Many campgrounds near Plainville provide access to historic sites and nature activities. Salem Farms Campground is strategically located with "Devils Hopyard and Gillette Castle close and Rocky Neck State Park about a 25 minute ride," providing educational day trip options for families.

Tips from RVers

Pull-through availability: RV campsites near Plainville, Connecticut offer varying levels of accessibility. At Lake Compounce Campground, a visitor noted: "Easy entry, long pull thrus. You will face your neighbor door to door but enough room between you don't feel invaded." The campground lacks sewer hookups but does have a dump station.

Hookup configurations: Electric, water, and sewer connections vary across campgrounds. At Aces High RV Park, approximately 45 miles from Plainville, "Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should," according to Matt S., who stayed at a premium waterfront full-hookup site with a concrete pad.

Site levelness: Check campground reviews for information on site grading. One camper at Branch Brook Campground noted potential issues with their site: "Our site had a 'deck' outside which was great but it had some very weak boards that you could have easily fallen through." Request information about site conditions when making reservations.
