Best Cabin Camping near Salem, CT

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several cabin campgrounds dot the area surrounding Salem, Connecticut, offering a range of overnight accommodations within state parks and private resorts. Rocky Neck State Park Campground and Hammonasset State Park Campground provide cabin options for visitors seeking solid shelter with basic amenities. Most cabins include electricity, beds without mattresses, and access to shared bathroom facilities. "The cabins offer two sets of bunks (no mattresses) and a small porch with a picnic table and fire ring outside. Some are located along the pond," notes one visitor. Mystic KOA and Niantic KOA feature more developed cabin accommodations with refrigerators and indoor seating areas, located within easy driving distance of coastal attractions.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. The more basic state park cabins typically feature wooden bunk frames requiring campers to bring their own sleeping pads or air mattresses. Deluxe cabin options at private campgrounds like Odetah Camping Resort and Strawberry Park include furnishings, climate control, and sometimes private bathrooms. According to one camper, "Deluxe cabins are cute and clean and furnished with linens, cookware, utensils, kitchen essentials, Keurig coffee maker/pods, and full-sized fridge." Most cabins require advance reservations, especially during summer months when facilities operate at peak capacity. Pet policies vary significantly by location, with some state parks prohibiting pets entirely.

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Basic cabins typically have limited or no cooking facilities, while more deluxe accommodations may feature microwaves, small refrigerators, or even full kitchens. Fire rings are standard at most cabin sites, though some locations charge rental fees for portable fire pits. Campground stores at larger facilities like KOAs stock essential supplies, firewood, and basic food items. The cabins at Mystic KOA and Waters Edge Family Campground remain especially popular for families who want access to swimming pools and organized activities while maintaining more comfortable sleeping arrangements than traditional tent camping.

    Burlingame State Park Campground

Huge campground, not many level sites.

I've never camped in Rhode Island, so I was curious to see what a state park campground had to offer. Rates are reasonable for state residents, but quite high if you are out-of-state, given the amenities. There are no hookups, but dump stations are available. Bathrooms have flush toilets and coin-operated showers. There's a small beach at the pond, a boat ramp, and proximity to wildlife refuges and the ocean. It's a HUGE campground, with 700 sites and 20 cabins. Canoes are available to rent.

There's a nice playground, a camp store, and a naturalists cabin. Trails are available for hiking and biking. The beach is sandy and there's a small parking lot there, but I suspect most people walk to it. No alcohol allowed.

I didn't see more than a handful of level sites, with varying degrees of slope, but many are quite large. If you have an RV, plan to level; if you have a tent, be sure to bring good mattresses to protect you from the roots and rocks and orient your head to the uphill side. Most of the sites have some degree of visual separation from their neighbors, but there are places where it's hard to tell where one site ends and the next one starts. Site have fire rings and picnic tables, but if you plan to cook over the fire, bring your own grate or plan to use sticks and/or aluminum foil.

If you don't have a tent, consider reserving one of their rustic cabins. These offer two sets of bunks (no mattresses) and a small porch with a picnic table and fire ring outside. Some are located along the pond.

3-4 bar cell phone coverage. No road traffic. East Beach is nearby, but parking fills early.

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Mystic KOA

Awesome Sunsets at the Mystic KOA

Didn’t quite feel like camping, but it was still a lovely weekend away at the Mystic KOA. We decided to head down to check out the aquarium and stayed at a deluxe cabin. It was cute and clean and furnished with linens, cookware, utensils, kitchen essentials, keurig coffee maker/pods, and full-sized fridge. Only complaint was an odd, musty smell we couldn’t quite figure out.

The grounds are large with vast amounts of space. Be forewarned that it’s right off of 95, and the sound definitely carries. Trees are sparse in areas, but the sunsets were a nice trade off. Amenities seemed nice from what we could tell - cool outdoor movie screen, pools and playground, though we certainly didn’t get to enjoy these things in February.

    Getaway Machimoodus

    First Time Glamper!

Getaway is fabulous! My first glamping experience was a winner! Machimoodus is one of the newest outposts just outside Boston and NYC. My bf and I went during one of the snowiest weekends all winter, but it was completely worth it!

First of all, the huge picture window in the cabin is AMAZING. It is just so rejuvenating waking up to freshly fallen snow on the trees - corny I know, but 100% accurate. The cabin was beautiful and rustic, and outfitted with cookware, dishes, a Bluetooth capable radio, essentials like coffee for purchase, books and a shovel for the snow.

Since the outpost was new, the fire pit was brand new, and despite the snow, we were able to cook on it. Very easy to use.

Only critiques would be the lackluster water pressure in the shower and how icy the walkway leading up from the driveway got in the cold weather. The water pressure was a small price to pay, however, and the icy walkway is resolved easily enough wearing micro-spikes.

I can’t recommend enough. It can be a pricy excursion, but the outposts are established in very beautiful settings. I cannot wait to check out more!

    Mystic KOA

    Wasp Breeding Ground!

Pros: Helpful staff, morning garbage pickup, excellent laundry facility, plenty of activities and amenities for children. Cons: Wasps!! Wasps everywhere!! We did our best to keep them at bay by lighting some sage but they were persistent. Not much privacy back in the tent/cabin areas, camp sites very close together and people have the ability to stare right into your site.

    White Pines Campsites

    Clean Campsites

We stayed at site 85 in Sunny Crest and liked having some privacy. The sites nearby had some trees providing space between each site. A lot of the sites we drove by were pretty sloped- I would recommend a drive though if you can beforehand.

The picnic table was chained down so there weren’t many options to set up having the fire pit and picnic table where they were.

Hiking trails were nice, good variety of easier and more difficult terrain.

    Rocky Neck State Park Campground

Shady Spot walking distance from Beach

I’ve lived in CT all my life but never used the Rocky Neck State Park Campground until now.

The campgrounds are named after water fowl: Crane, Egret, Osprey, Heron etc...We stayed in Egret. We camped at site #4 (sunny) then moved to #38 (shady).

Both spots were quiet, music low and people minded their business. Equal mix of RVs big and small as well as many tents.

Bathhouses and toilets were not as cleaned as I would have liked but passable. Coronavirus social distancing required.

Sites include one paved parking spot (ours was very muddy) a fire pit and a picnic table. No water or electric hookup. Wi-fi not available at this campground. Fire wood is sold at camp office. There is no store in park - no ice either.

A lot of you children. Short walk to Rock Neck beach. Nature Center has movies on weekends for kids.

Anyone with kayaks can’t easily get to boat launch. It’s 4-5 miles by car at 4 mile river boat launch. See photos.

Guide to Salem

Cabin accommodations near Salem, Connecticut range from rustic to upscale options with varying amenities and seasonal availability. During peak summer months, most campground cabins operate at full capacity, requiring advance reservations 3-6 months ahead. State park cabins remain open from late May through September, while private resorts often extend their cabin availability into October for fall foliage viewing opportunities.

What to do

Shoreline exploration: Rocky Neck State Park Campground offers direct beach access within walking distance from camping areas. "My family has camped at Rocky Neck every year since i was a child. Every site had a central bathhouse and they have a variety of tree covering options for each campers preferences. The campsite is only a short walk from the beach and available mountain bike and hiking trails," notes one visitor.

Fishing opportunities: Waters Edge Family Campground provides pond access for anglers with dedicated shoreline areas. "There's a nice lake to float on, a clean pool to swim in, activities every weekend. I camp here seasonally and love it," states one regular camper. The property maintains stocked fishing areas suitable for beginners.

Wildlife observation: While staying at Hammonasset State Park Campground, nature enthusiasts should visit Meig's Point Nature Center. According to a camper, "You can ride your bike from your site to the playground, store, beach, local ice cream shop, coffee shop, or our family favorite, meig's point nature center." The facility offers interpretive displays and seasonal programming about coastal ecosystems.

What campers like

Pool facilities: Odetah Camping Resort receives praise for its recently upgraded aquatic amenities. "We love camping at Odetah. Clean facilities. Great staff. New pool and hot tub. Will definitely come back," shares one visitor. The resort added a splash pad specifically designed for younger children.

Spacious sites: Many cabin campers appreciate the layout at Aces High RV Park, where sites feature concrete pads and patios. "Clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio (I love a clean, level concrete pad!). Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should," reports one camper.

Location convenience: Niantic KOA earns positive reviews for its strategic position near multiple attractions. "They will give free shuttle rides to 3 beaches & downtown Niantic, CT," mentions one guest. This service runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day and requires advance reservation at the office.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Most Salem area cabin facilities book completely 3-6 months in advance for summer weekends. At Mystic KOA, availability becomes extremely limited. "We snagged a late reservation over a busy summer weekend so the place was packed," reports one visitor, indicating the competitive nature of securing accommodations.

Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some camping areas. As one Mystic KOA camper notes: "You can hear the highway very well at night, particularly in the safari field." State park cabins typically offer more buffer from road noise.

Bathroom facilities: Quality varies significantly between locations. While some private resorts feature updated restrooms, state park facilities may be more utilitarian. One camper at Niantic KOA observed, "Bathrooms could be nicer, but not bad. Would stay again."

Tips for camping with families

Activity scheduling: Wolf's Den Family Campground organizes regular programming. "Bingo, board games, and other activities available," mentions one camper. The recreation staff typically posts weekly schedules at the office and bathhouses.

Transportation options: Pack bicycles for easier navigation around larger facilities. One Hammonasset visitor suggests: "We make it a point to spend at least a week here every summer! You can ride your bike from your site to the playground, store, beach, local ice cream shop, coffee shop."

Wildlife awareness: Some campgrounds have resident wildlife populations that require proper food storage. "The skunks are friendly! Great for kids!" notes one Rocky Neck State Park visitor, highlighting the importance of keeping food items secured.

Tips from RVers

Utility access: Strawberry Park provides full hookups at most sites, beneficial for longer cabin stays. "Two easy dump stations with nice clean area," reports one visitor, referencing the well-maintained sanitation facilities important for extended visits.

Vehicle considerations: Access roads to some cabins may present challenges during inclement weather. At Waters Edge Family Campground, one visitor mentioned: "Most sites are even and good sized." However, another camper noted: "It was quiet. The salt water pool was clean. Booked a site for October before we left. Showers could use updating."

Seasonal variations: Fall visitors should confirm which amenities remain operational as some facilities reduce services after Labor Day. Water systems at state park cabins typically shut down by mid-October due to freezing concerns.
