St. Louis Creek Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Arapaho National Forest's St. Louis Creek Campground sits just outside Fraser, Colorado, operated by the local Lions Club rather than a standard Forest Service crew. That arrangement shows in the day-to-day upkeep. Hosts know the surrounding trails, resupply points in Winter Park and Fraser, and the quirks of the campground itself. At $29 per night with water hookups and sites that accommodate RVs up to 55 feet, it draws a mix of tent campers and rigs looking for a base in the Fraser Valley.

One thing to set expectations on before arrival: beetle kill has removed most of the tree cover. Several reviewers note the campground feels more open and exposed than neighboring sites in the forest. That cuts both ways. Shade is minimal on warm afternoons, but sightlines toward Byers Peak and the Continental Divide are unobstructed. Alicia V. notes "great views of the Continental Divide and Byers Peak" directly from camp. Sites are spaced well apart, and the vault toilets draw consistent praise, with one host famously claiming the cleanest bathrooms of any campground in the area.

St. Louis Creek runs alongside the campground, giving anglers easy access to trout fishing without hiking anywhere. Hiking and mountain biking trails connect directly from camp, including access toward Byers Peak. A kids' pump track sits within walking distance. Bear boxes are provided at sites, and at least one reviewer reports a bear crossing nearby on the Dead Horse Trail roughly a mile out, so the boxes are worth using. Firewood is available on-site.

The campground runs May through October, with reservations available. Labor Day weekend has drawn full crowds, though some campers have found sites without advance booking. Cell service is listed as available. Access carries a rough road warning, so lower-clearance vehicles should check conditions before heading in. For campgrounds around Arapaho National Forest with more tree cover, ST. Louis Camp Ground sits 0.3 miles south and may offer a different site experience.

Guests commonly noted spacious sites with excellent facilities and outstanding host service near Fraser. The beetle kill has left limited shade and some crowded feeling, but many appreciated the mountain views and trail access this created.

Views, Nature Show

Small campground near St Louis Creek (accessible via small trails through the willows; tight but fun small creek fly fishing). Nice access to mtn bike trails (talk to the host!)—no e-bikes allowed. Fires banned (see Watch Duty if you want to know what’s burning in the dry West). Pit toilets were clean (thank you for the small trash barrel and night light). We loved our stay, saw a family of bluebirds, missed the fox, but watched a moose amble nearby. And the monsoon thunderstorm!

Everything seemed great, except no shade

Unfortunately, this campground got hit hard with beetle kill, resulting in little to no trees (and the ones that are there really are 'little' lol) so it seems pretty deserty.

However, if your plans are to just sleep there and not hang out all day, then I would highly recommend. The camp host Judy was WONDERFUL, and I wish we could've taken her with us to where we ended up staying. She was so helpful, KIND, and we found out she shares the same birthday with our almost 2 year old son.

Judy also claims to have the cleanest bathrooms of any campground, and she isn't lying. Those vault toilets look brand new!

Hidden Gem

Near tons of hiking/bike trails. Creek runs several yards away from camp. Kid pump track waking distance from from campground. Super clean pit toilets. Camp spots have large separation so not ontop of each other.

Camp Host Judy is SUPER AWESOME. She is very knowledgeable of the area and very helpful in making our stay top notch!

Amenities: large picnic table, Bear box, metal fire pit with grate top, on-site trash bins, central water, pit toilets.

Clean, quiet, well situated

Went here last fall with the family after we struck out at some nearby BLM spots.  We were able to get in no problem on labor day weekend and the host was absolutely fantastic.  Super friendly and happy to help - made our experience really easy.

As far as the actual site, it's a bit sparse and certainly nothing fancy but the location is fantastic and as the title it's extremely well maintained.  There's some great hikes with easy access from the campground including a river trail and even some mountain biking trails down the road.  Plenty of space between spots, clean restroom which is well maintained, firepit with a great, and bear box.

Overall, if you're looking for a great spot near Fraser or Winter Park this is a great go to.  Affordable, clean, and just a fantastic campground.

Great relief

Sometimes I go on a random excursion to escape the city. This was one place I have stayed and it was quite nice. I don’t remember if there were any facilities but it was pretty primitive. Had a good selection of spot but there are tree stumps everywhere. Have bear boxes, which are needed as I did see a bear while hiking on dead horse trail ( about 1 mile from the camp). It crossed my path in a hurry so I froze. All went well.

Beautiful sunrise in the morning. Great food and coffee close by. All in all I had a great experience.

Nice access to Creek and bike trails

Well maintained by the local Lyons Club. Clean, nice pit toilets. Big with mountain bikers. Some long RV sites, but best for 25' or less, or tents. Beetle kill has made the area open with little shade in the campground. Surrounding forest is quite nice.

Meh

Sites are really close together and campground was full for the weekend. It felt like too many people in the small area due to the lack of trees. Host was super nice. Close to lots of trails.

Great Location Close to Town

Needed a spot for to camp for a trail race at Snow Mountain Ranch and their campground had closed in early September. We were happy to find this little gem, which offered super easy access to the race, but also a great base to explore the Fraser Valley and Winter Park. You can easily access the trail system right from camp for epic mountain biking, trail running and hiking. I can imagine coming back here for the Jazz Festival or Art Market in the summer time.

Other folks have mentioned that beetle kill hit this area hard, and so the campground more exposed than most. If you are looking for a private shady spot in the pines, this isn't it. But the sites are clean and easy to pull through/ back into for RVs. They do offer water and clean vault toilets. Another plus is that campground is operated by the local Lions club, so the proceeds benefit local community organizations and the hosts really know the area.

Beautiful area!

There are many trails and roads for mountain biking and hiking. The trails leave right from the campground. St. Louis Creek runs adjacent to the campground with easy access and good trout fishing.

The towns of Winter Park and Fraser are nearby so it is easy to get in and pick up whatever you need.

Great views of the Continental Divide and Byers Peak. If you’re in the area for a couple days, I highly recommend hiking Byers Peak .

Great little campground

This place was awesome. Located just outside Fraser, CO. Easy to get to but far enough away to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Tons of hiking and biking right from camp. The camp host was amazing. She had tons of local knowlegde and was happy to talk about the area. I will be heading back as often as possible. In recent years the campground has been clear cut due to beetle kill. However, the lack of trees in camp allow one to see the beauty all around. The views now, weren't available before.

Saint Louis Creek Campground

Beautiful location, more remote than many of the other campgrounds near Winter Park / Fraser area. Byers Peak hike is nearby which gives great views of the valley and surrounding areas. The campsite is a bit further from town, but no more than 15 minutes. Facilities are well maintained but rustic. Based on other campgrounds in the area, would highly recommend this for the views and its proximity to great outdoor activities (hiking / mountain biking).

Over the years...

I have been to this campground many times over the years. The creek is always a refreshing stop after riding mountain bikes all over the area. A beetle infestation claimed many pine trees in the area, the campground itself looks very different. On a positive note, hundreds of new, young trees are popping all over. I can't wait to see it in 30 years!
