Well maintained, easy access to restrooms and trash. Really close between campsites, pretty loud and really crowded but as to be expected being a June weekend. Would recommend for the price but might be able to do better in the area.
Overall was a good spot close to Manitou Lake and Cheesman Canyon areas. A lot of open spots on a mid-June weekend but glad we reserved as some were really small. The campground was pretty nice especially spot #2 which had a ton of space to itself: clean, close access to restrooms/trash, good fire pits, chopped wood for sale, and overall well maintained by Jerry the host. My only gripe about this campground is all the spots were really angled making it a bit awkward for a RTT'er. Sort of narrow parking and very angled lots - just need to bring leveling blocks or a way to prop yourself a bit which we had.
Bugs not bad at all and quiet from the main road down the way which was nice. Would highly recommend for tenters and RTT'ers.
Stayed here for a night while hitting up some local hikes. It's reservation only and was fairly full on a Saturday night so made sure to book a spot in advance.
The campsite has two entrances - one from the west passing North Michigan Reservoir and one from the South East which is basically from Lake Agnes Trailhead. We took the latter and luckily have a truck with a lift and skid plate otherwise would have been a really tough drive. So just a warning for those who don't - really rough!
For the campsite - really nice and spacious! Amenities like restrooms were really spacious, each spot had a table and nice fire ring, and lastly the gravel patch for tents, etc were in excellent shape. A nice mix of shade and open areas which we liked. The one downside - tons of mosquitoes. Likely hard to get away from considering the amount of rain received but was pretty brutal and had to stave them off towards sundown.
Overall a really nice campsite and the North Michigan Reservoir is a blast if you have a SUP. If you want a really low key, not terribly crowded, well maintained campground in a beautiful spot of Colorado check this out. State Forest State Park is amazing!
We traveled down on Saturday from Denver to Great Sand Dunes and then hit up this convenient spot around 5pm and stayed for one night. Was extremely well positioned being 15 min from the park and about 5 min down the road from Zapata Falls which is a quick and easy hike. Upon entering it was really impressed with the layout. Tons of spaces with ample room between vehicles and you have the choice of being down low where it's more flat vs. up into the hill side a bit. We probably went about a mile up before picking a spot off the fairly rocky and bumpy road. The road is actually pretty well maintained and there are spots all over the place which was great. Most spots looked to come with a fire pit if desired but was rainy for us.
Overall, would highly recommend getting up into the bushes just for a bit more privacy as well as shelter from some of the wind. The weather does whip in fairly fast and most locations are pretty exposed so just be prepared to withstand some strong wind but it does come in spurts and won't last forever. The campsites were great though and offered some fantastic views of the plains as well as up towards the mountains. We will definitely be coming back due to its location and space!
Went here last fall with the family after we struck out at some nearby BLM spots. We were able to get in no problem on labor day weekend and the host was absolutely fantastic. Super friendly and happy to help - made our experience really easy.
As far as the actual site, it's a bit sparse and certainly nothing fancy but the location is fantastic and as the title it's extremely well maintained. There's some great hikes with easy access from the campground including a river trail and even some mountain biking trails down the road. Plenty of space between spots, clean restroom which is well maintained, firepit with a great, and bear box.
Overall, if you're looking for a great spot near Fraser or Winter Park this is a great go to. Affordable, clean, and just a fantastic campground.
Heading here for the 4th of July weekend was busy as one would expect but from the minute we drove in were extremely impressed by the upkeep, layout, space between sites, and of course incredible views. Hahn's Peak Lake is honestly a gem of a spot about an hour north of Steamboat. The lake is no more than a 5 min walk from any campground which is convenient. I will say that the lake was a bit busy, at least near or around the boat ramp (basically paddle boards/kayaks), but this was to be expected due to how gorgeous the location was and also that it was the 4th of July weekend. However, the lake has plenty of drop in spots and it's fairly large so easy to break away. There is also a really nice hike that goes around the lake which is about 2-3 miles depending on where you take it.
With regards to the actual campsite, we were in #27 (Double Lot) and it was absolutely perfect. It's got just the basics which is a fire pit, picnic tables, as well as two small plots with crushed gravel for tents but the view was spectacular. The lot next to us was about 100 feet away and would say that's about the average. The host came and greeted us and was very nice. There is a vault toilet as well as dumpster within a hundred or so feet and both are well maintained and well positioned in the campground.
Outside of the campsite - there are plenty of options. We headed to Pearl Lake State Park which offers amazing SUP opportunities including the ability to rent (also sell beer at this little stand). It's a bit busy and the parking is limited so if you don't want to walk too far would suggest going around 10-11am. The lake though is stunning and offers a much more diverse and lengthy hike around. Overall the lake is much larger as well.
Clean, well organized, insanely well kept/managed, great amenities, and of course breathtaking views and surroundings. Was easy to find coming down Independence Pass and upon pulling in found out spot in a cinch. Each lot is marked by name which made it easy. Wood is sold here for $7 per bundle. Difficult Trail is within walking distance. There was a bear sighting a few days prior to us but nothing to speak of personally. Did see a moose though in the early morning!
