Shrine Pass Road Dispersed Camping

Description

Road Closed until May 10th

This dirt road starts at Vail Pass and ends at the town of Redcliff. It can be traveled in either direction, but for biking it is much easier starting at Vail Pass. This dirt road is passable by all but the lowest passenger cars and is relatively easy for mountain bikers. It offers views of Mount of the Holy Cross in the Sawatch Range, access to the Shrine Mountain Trail, and access to the short, accessible trail to "Julia's Deck."

Overnight stay

I stayed at the first pull out up the road. It’s quite bumpy road but was quite at night and conveniently off of i70. It’s a busy road during the day though. I didn’t go past the first pull out so idk how many spots there are.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 4WD vehicle required to access Shrine Pass Road for camping?

While 4WD isn't strictly required for Shrine Pass Road, the road is notably bumpy and rough in sections. Most passenger vehicles can access at least the first pull-out area, but road conditions may deteriorate further up the pass. Consider a vehicle with decent clearance for a more comfortable journey. During wet weather or early spring conditions, 4WD might be beneficial for navigating muddy or uneven sections.

Where is dispersed camping allowed along Shrine Pass Road?

Dispersed camping at Shrine Pass Road is available at several pull-outs along the road. There are camping spots beginning with the first pull-out area after turning onto Shrine Pass Road from I-70. Additional camping areas are scattered further along the road at various pull-outs. The road is accessible from I-70, making it a convenient dispersed camping option close to the interstate while still offering quieter surroundings away from highway noise.

What are the rules and regulations for dispersed camping at Shrine Pass?

Shrine Pass follows standard Forest Service dispersed camping regulations: camp in previously used sites only, stay at least 100 feet from water sources, and practice Leave No Trace principles. Camping is limited to 14 days within a 30-day period. Campfires may be restricted during dry periods or fire bans, so check current fire restrictions before your trip. Pack out all trash and waste. The area doesn't have facilities, so campers should be prepared with water and proper waste disposal methods. Always check with White River National Forest for any temporary restrictions.

What is the best time of year for dispersed camping at Shrine Pass?

Summer and early fall (June through September) offer the best conditions for camping at Shrine Pass Road. The road is typically snow-free during these months, wildflowers bloom in summer, and fall brings beautiful aspen colors. The area experiences heavy traffic during daytime hours, especially on weekends, so mid-week visits provide more solitude. Be aware that this high-elevation location can experience sudden weather changes even in summer. Late fall through late spring often brings snow and potentially impassable road conditions.
