Jacks Gulch - **CLOSED FOR SEASON**

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Reaching Jacks Gulch requires several miles of gravel road, and reviewers note that side roads branching off the main route get rough enough to warrant 4x4 and higher clearance. The established campground sits within Roosevelt National Forest and runs from late May through mid-November, with sites ranging from $42 to $206 per night depending on hookup type. Reservations are available, which matters on summer weekends when the campground can fill by late morning.

The site mix here is fairly broad. Electric hookups accommodate RVs up to 30 feet, and the campground also has walk-in, equestrian, and mixed-use sites. Vault toilets serve the area, with drinking water and trash service on-site. Firewood is available for purchase, which proved useful to one group that specifically sought out Jacks Gulch during a statewide fire ban period. Cell service is listed as available. Several trails branch off from the campground, accessible to both hikers and cyclists, with dirt roads spreading out in multiple directions through the surrounding forest.

Noise levels tend to stay low, though wildlife activity at night has been reported, including coyotes in the vicinity. The sites are consistently described as clean and well-spaced. Corey B. notes it's a "beautiful drive to get there," which reflects a common thread across reviews. No lake or stream runs directly through the campground, but water is reachable by car within a short distance.

Campers wanting dispersed alternatives nearby can look at Pingree Road Dispersed Camping to the north or Crown Point Road Dispersed a couple of miles to the northwest.

Many visitors appreciated this hidden gem for its spacious, clean sites and exceptionally quiet atmosphere tucked away on a gravel road. Basic vault toilets are adequate, though the campground lacks water activities. Most found the secluded location and peaceful setting worth the scenic drive.

Dispersed Mountain Camping

These are nice dispersed spots that are off the 63E. Any vehicle can make it on 63E, like others though, if you trace off the main road it gets sketchy. You will need 4x4 and higher clearance. But, that’s where the best spots are. Find these gems along the road, first come first serve, summers are busy!

Endless dirt roads to explore

Great little campground up the Poudre. My kids, my lab and I took in a show from the late, great Justin Townes Earle at the Mishiwaka and needed a place to crash for the weekend. Found this gem a number of miles up the road and were really pleased. We had a moose and her baby visit our camper first thing the next morning. We were able to get on bikes and explore the endless dirt roads that spoke off in all directions. Little creeks abound.

Leave no trace.

Saving grace

After driving for nearly 4hrs to find a spot in any of the first come first serve camp grounds up Poudre Canyon we started to head home only to pull into Pingree Park for one last cry for help... we stumbled upon Jack’s Gulch, a little hidden gem, tucked inside a cute mountain trek to the CSU campus at Pingree Park. It didn’t have any “water features” like a stream or a river but it was a quick car ride to find that. The spots were clean, noise was minimal, and there were bathrooms if you needed them. A lot of options as far as camping goes - electrical sites, walk up sites, equestrian sites, and mixed use (what I like to call a mixture of tent and RV). There were also trails all around the campsite that were accessible for bikes, or hiking. It was definitely a Father’s Day to remember. Oh yea, some coyotes at night definitely woke us up! I don’t believe they made it to the campsite but they were close 😳

Our new spot

This place is great. It's way off the path. Beautiful drive to get there. It is in the woods with no water activities, but very nice and peaceful.

Hidden gem!

We camped at Jack's Gulch primarily because we wanted a campfire, and it was one of the few places not currently under a fire ban in the state. It is a forest service campground in the Roosevelt National Forest. Vault toilets only. Well off the beaten path. We were afraid of it being full, so we arrived around 930am on a Saturday, there were plenty of spots to choose from, and several still available by the end of the day. It's a quiet, tucked away campground several miles down a gravel road. It was so quiet and beautiful. There were several trails easily accessible from the campgrounds. We chose a campsite closer to the toilet for easy access, but did not notice a smell at all. Our non-electric site was $22 for one night. Maybe we should keep this hidden gem a secret? 😉

The campground is known for its quiet, clean environment with good separation between sites. Fire rings are available at campsites (when fire bans aren't in effect).
