Accessible via a rough dirt road off Highway 82, Lincoln Creek Dispersed sits within White River National Forest outside Aspen and features roughly 22 numbered sites strung along the creek corridor. Road conditions matter here. Reviewers consistently note that high clearance is necessary, and the terrain grows rockier and more technical past site 22. The seasonal window runs approximately June 21 through November 21, so timing a visit outside that range means the road is closed to vehicles.
Sites vary considerably in size and character. The first five sit in the trees, while later sites open up to views of the surrounding ridgelines. Most parking is close to the sites, though a handful require a short walk. The sound of Lincoln Creek is audible from much of the campground, and sites are spaced far enough apart that neighbors are rarely visible. Weekends draw crowds, and one reviewer noted arriving early on a Saturday to find only six or seven sites available.
No toilets are on-site along the numbered sites, but a pit toilet exists at the Portal campground at the road's end, a few miles further in. Pack-in, pack-out rules apply throughout. Nearby, Upper Grottos Campground and Lincoln Gulch Campground provide additional options along the same drainage. Brian C. sums up the lower sites well: "not far from town but quiet and in the woods with a creek." Campers who can handle the road and plan to arrive early on weekends will find the tradeoffs worthwhile.
