Campsites near Silt, Colorado sit in the Colorado River Valley surrounded by high desert terrain at approximately 5,500 feet elevation. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 90°F while winter nights often drop below freezing, creating varied camping conditions throughout the seasons. Camping options range from established state park campgrounds with electric hookups to free dispersed sites on BLM land with river access.
What to do
Explore caves and waterfalls: Rifle Falls State Park Campground provides immediate access to unique limestone caves and a triple waterfall. "The hike to the falls is short from the day use area. It is amazing! The hike also has some great caves and allows you to go up and look down on the falls," explains reviewer Billie B.
Fish at nearby reservoirs: Rifle Gap State Park Campground offers sites near a reservoir with fishing opportunities. "We had a great time fishing, but they will check fishing licenses, so don't be a poacher," notes Sam W. The reservoir provides ideal conditions for both shore and boat fishing.
Mountain biking access: Four Mile Road Dispersed camping provides excellent mountain biking access. "The bike path is right out the front. We rode it from Aspen down valley and right back to our campsite," states Patrick J. Numerous trails accommodate different skill levels with minimal traffic.
Try paddleboarding: Harvey Gap BLM Dispersed camping offers water recreation options. "This is a great little parking area across the street from Harvey Gap State Park. There are two off-road trails coming off the parking area and you can see the water and people paddle boarding at the beach from the Sites," writes Matthew R.
What campers like
River proximity: Glenwood Canyon Resort provides sites directly alongside the Colorado River. "After spending three nights in forest service campgrounds, we landed here... We opted for a riverfront RV site (#17) and we were right on the Colorado River, with the soothing white noise of the river putting us to sleep each night," shares Lee D.
Peaceful mountain settings: Elk Creek Campground offers a natural environment with water features. "Not your typical asphalt RV parking lot. Rarely can you find a full hookup site in a natural setting along a roaring creek," notes Jan M. The creek adds ambient sound that masks road noise.
Clean facilities: Rifle Falls State Park Campground maintains well-kept amenities despite its small size. "A small but beautiful campground with awesome waterfalls, caves, and hiking. There are 13 RV/tent sites and 7 walk-in tent sites," reports RichMichelle M.
Privacy between sites: Ami's Acres Campground provides terrain features that create natural separation. "The campground is built on the side of a mountain so the individual sites are tiered. I could see it making a few people nervous to back in but it's no big deal," explains Renee G.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. "No cell service. The sites were clean and well kept. There is not much for shade," reports Sarah Y. about Rifle Gap State Park Campground. Prepare by downloading maps and information before arrival.
Road conditions to dispersed sites: Access to Harvey Gap BLM requires appropriate vehicles. "Really pretty spot if you have 4x4 or something that can handle hills and off roading. I tore the back of my rv on a tiny hill entering the area," cautions Ashley P.
Seasonal weather considerations: The area experiences significant temperature fluctuations. "We did forget about how cold it can get in the mountains so we woke up freezing and left early. Bring everything you need because it's a long drive to re-up on supplies," advises Briana at Elk Creek Campground.
Popularity and availability: Rifle Falls State Park fills quickly during peak season. "Small yet very pretty setting. Waterfall and caves are great," notes Jolin A., adding that the campground has limited sites that book rapidly during summer weekends.
Tips for camping with families

Tent camping conveniences: Rifle Falls offers thoughtful amenities for tent campers. "Most sites are private and right along the creek. The park also provides bins to carry supplies to the tent sites which makes it much easier since you can't park at your site," notes Kayla B.
Tips from RVers
Leveling challenges: Many sites require significant leveling equipment. "Really pretty spot if you have 4x4 or something that can handle hills and off roading... And its very unlevel by the front so bring levelers," advises Ashley P. about Harvey Gap BLM Dispersed.
Space considerations: Ami's Acres Campground has unique site configurations. "The campground is built on the side of a mountain so the individual sites are tiered. I could see it making a few people nervous to back in but it's no big deal," notes Renee G.
Access road information: Some campgrounds have challenging approach roads. "This park has amazing views! They had a couple spaces for large motor homes and we fit fine without unhooking. The manager was very friendly and took us to our site... The gravel road leading to the campground is in need of a repair," reports Roxanna L.
Electrical limitations: Be aware of power restrictions at certain facilities. "My least favorite part about this place is that they strictly forbid EV charging. Why? If I'm in a big camper with two a/c running plus big TV, fridge, etc then I'm pulling just as much power as my EV charger would," notes Pete H. about Glenwood Springs West/Colorado River KOA.
