Valley View Hot Springs—Orient Land Trust - CLOTHING OPTIONAL

Came for the daily soak - stayed for the camping

This place was great! We originally planned just to do a daily soak before heading to our next campsite but ended up just staying here because we enjoyed it so much. The camp sites were simple but great and you have total access to all hot springs, bathrooms, showers, sauna, AND a communal outdoor kitchen. We participated in the clothing optional experience but didn’t feel like we had to. Great people all around from guests to staff. Highly recommend!

    Joyful Journey Hot Springs

Costs a lot more than listed

We were charged $170 for a site in the middle of a gravel parking lot. It included dinner, breakfast and use of the hot springs. The WiFi didn’t reach us, but worked in the buffet style cafeteria-like dining area. Way overpriced for the experience!

    Great Sand Dunes Oasis

Amazing stay with views of the Dunes!

We loved this camp site! It was our first time to tent camp in Colorado and it was great. Several sites to choose from. Some have views of the dunes, some are more secluded. Bathrooms were clean. Very spacious tent site with a fire pit. Our tent sleeps 6 and we had no trouble fitting in the spot.

    Alamosa KOA

    What all KOAs aspire to

Super easy to access, very nice staff & good amenities. I pitched my tent four one night here. Tent sites are spacious & have a privacy fence between them. All wood burning fires are currently prohibited in Colorado, but there are fire pits for when they're not. I met a couple with an RV that make this camp a part of any trip this direction. They pointed out that even full this camp is still a gem.

    Great Sand Dunes Oasis

Our First Camping Trip of 2022

We absolutely loved Sand Dunes Oasis! It was still off season so we did not have running water at the site but we were able to fill up on site when we arrived. The code to the bathroom changes so if you check in after dark, be sure to get a new code the next day! We almost could not take showers as a result!

    Great views

Nice area, seems like 3+ camping areas, I stayed here for about 4 days. Some fire pits and good views on the drive up. Road was not busy. Verizon signal was spotty. Most of the time I did not have any signal.

    Alamosa KOA

    Great service!

The staff really make this place five stars. So sweet and helpful and welcoming! Amenities are fine, pool was closed during our post-labor day visit. Store is well stocked and they have a pizza shop on site that can be delivered to your campsite. Really good pizza!! The sites are typical KOA- fairly close but well kept and level. Some highway noise, worth it to reserve a “view site” because they’re farthest from the road and bigger. A+ experience!

    Joyful Journey Hot Springs

Camping Isn't the Reason to Come Here

Just going to start by saying that camping is not why people come here -- it’s for the waters!  The spa offers numerous pools and tubs at varying temperatures so you can find your joyful spot– be sure to check out the cold plunge pool as well.

The RV spots are on one side of the large parking lot, with the hook up spaces in the middle, with non-electric spots running around two of the outside sides. We were in one of these spots because we run completely on solar to save money. There are zero trees around the lot so sunshine was plentiful.

The bathrooms were clean, modern and nice, as was the small, shared kitchen where we could do dishes. In addition to camping the resort offers hotel rooms, private yurts, tipis, conference rooms and other hotel services. In addition to the soaking being included in the price, so was a buffet style breakfast and dinner. The food was delicious, and veggie/ organic friendly. The whole experience was very reasonably priced and relaxing!

There’s a lot of hiking nearby, in the mountains to the north, west and east- but definitely a drive away. We didn’t check out the walking path in the spa, but they did offer yoga classes in the yurt as well as private massages services and a host of other spa treatments.

There aren’t a lot of nearby towns that offer larger grocery stores, Crestone has a small co-op grocery as does Buena Vista, so if you are planning on cooking for yourself, come prepared.

Winter temperatures frequently drop below freezing, while summer days typically reach the 70s-80s°F with cooler evenings.

What to Do

Fishing at South Fork Campground: Access prime spots along the Rio Grande River for fly fishing and recreational angling. "My friend and I stayed at the South Fork Campground for a fly fishing trip. The campground itself sits on the Rio Grande River which is a world class fly fishing river," notes Troy W.

Dark sky stargazing: The San Luis Valley offers exceptional celestial viewing conditions year-round. Gary J. at UFO Watchtower reports, "Stayed here for one night, passing through. No showers, only porta potties, but they were clean. Wind was howling, but calmed down after dark."

Paddling and water recreation: Several campgrounds provide direct water access. "We enjoyed our stay. The park is in a convenient area with a cozy atmosphere," mentions Pat T. about Alamosa KOA, which serves as a good base camp for water activities.

Visit natural hot springs: The region has several natural hot springs within driving distance of campgrounds. "This was a lovely stay. Very peaceful campers and friendly staff. Our pups enjoyed the short walk around the lake, but be wary of snakes!" advises Katie H. about Pagosa Riverside Campground.

What Campers Like

Riverside camping spots: Many campers appreciate sites with direct water access. Joseph W. shares about Pagosa Riverside Campground: "This is a well maintained campgrounds with great friendly staff. The San Juan River and small lake are on property. We are in spot #40 a large pull through with electric and water only."

Diverse accommodation options: The region offers various glamping in Monte Vista, Colorado area and surrounding communities with options beyond traditional tent sites. "Appears to be an old KOA campground. Somewhat rustic, but hosts helpful and friendly. Full hook-ups and tent camping available. We had a lovely spot by the pond very enjoyable stay," reports Paula S.

Uncrowded camping experiences: Many sites provide solitude, especially during shoulder seasons. "I really enjoyed the quiet here. There were only a few other campers and it mostly felt like we had the place to ourselves," says Abigail R. about Ponderosa Campground.

Proximity to attractions: Central location for multiple outdoor activities. "Nice campground with friendly staff. Great Sand Dunes National Park only 30 minutes away. Perfect central location for several day trips," notes Renee W.

What You Should Know

Weather variations: High desert conditions mean significant temperature swings. A camper at Turkey Creek Road shares, "We had a great view, plenty of space and privacy. Close enough to head to Pagosa for a soak," highlighting how the area combines warm days with cool nights.

Limited services at some sites: Many dispersed camping areas have minimal facilities. "Dirt road off the highway into the San Juan National First. 4 designated campsites along the road with fire pits. Road dead ends after about 3 miles. No service (Verizon)," reports Brandon F.

Seasonal considerations: Many campgrounds operate on limited schedules. "Stayed two nights, staff and guests were very friendly. Would stay again, although it is a little pricey it was worth it," says Jason L., suggesting visiting during peak season when staffed facilities are fully operational.

Elevation impacts: The high altitude affects both weather and physical exertion. "Super fun and kooky place and the people who run it are very friendly. We were the only ones here Halloween weekend so it was very quiet and peaceful most of the time. Cold at night!" reports Jennifer M.

Tips for Camping with Families

Look for kid-friendly water features: Several campgrounds have shallow water access. Mary P. shares about Lower Beaver Creek Campground: "For the past 4 years now my two 8 year old boys and I meet up with my brother from Oregon to go whitewater rafting. My kids can play in the water and I can watch them from the table while they fish or play."

Choose campgrounds with playground amenities: Some facilities offer additional recreation for children. "We got a great spot by the little lake on the property. You can rent paddle boats, swim & fish in it if you want. There is a nice walking path around it & the river that you can also park near," notes Sheila W.

Consider glamping options for families new to camping: Luxury camping accommodations around Monte Vista provide comfort for families. "This place was magical. It was the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary! Only an hour from the Sand Dunes, 45 min from Creede, and close to Three Barrel Brewing Co!" says Hayley K. from South Fork Lodge and RV Park.

Check for educational opportunities: Many campgrounds offer wildlife viewing or interpretive programs. "This spot is surrounded by beautiful Colorado mountains! The wind was very strong in June, if you use a canopy, try to use some strap tiedowns so your canopy frame does not bend," advises Rocky F.

Tips from RVers

Level sites are available but limited: Seek campgrounds with dedicated RV areas. "Great place for full hook up spots in South Fork. They also have great trails close that you can drive to via atv or ohv's. Wonderful views all around from our campsites!" shares Philip B.

Check for size limitations: Some campgrounds have restrictions. Linda H. notes, "Great 12 day stay July 2021. Camp host is pleasant & does a great job. He makes rounds often, grounds & campsites are well maintained, restrooms are clean."

Seasonal access varies: RV sites may have different availability windows than tent sites. "We stayed 3 nights. 2022 rate is $24 per night. Gravel road and gravel sites. Campground was kept clean. Well water with 2 hand pumps. I wouldn't bring a trailer over 23 ft and expect to fit," advises James M. about Lower Beaver Creek Campground.

Full hookup availability: Several campgrounds offer comprehensive services. "We love South Fork Lodge and RV. Not fancy but run by great people who aim to please!" says Connie C., highlighting the importance of staff support for RV campers.
