Seven miles of forest road lead to dispersed camping sites along Forest Road 663, also known as Buckle Road, in the San Juan National Forest. Campers report finding established spots with fire pits and access to a vault toilet near the Buckle Road trailhead. The road requires no four-wheel drive according to recent visitors.
Elk and deer frequent the area, and the short Buckle Trail provides access to a nearby lake and open field. Few other campers use this remote location, creating opportunities for solitude miles from populated areas. The forest service allows campfires, and visitors note minimal bug activity during summer months.
