Quiet with beautiful views!

We found a nice, open campsite with great views of Mono Lake and the eastern Sierras. Road got quite sandy in some sections, would recommend having a 4x4 to access some of the sites. Not a lot of tree cover so bring sunscreen!

Beautiful spot!

I came here late at night and there were plenty of places to park off the side of the driveway! They were all spread out so everyone got their privacy, and the views were amazing! Overlooking mono lake on one side and a mountain range on the other, definitely recommend. Super easy to find, right off of CA-120 and far enough to not hear the cars driving at night. Loved it here!

Epic

Came up here in July. It gets warm during the day, but there is a good breeze during the day. And an even better breeze at night. lots of bugs. bring bug spray. 4wd not required, but might help. High clearance will help.

Siteno site #s, but a bad ass view.

Good spot

It was pretty windy when we went but still a lovely spot. Very close to the highway so we were alone but could still hear some traffic - still got pretty quiet though. The ground is pretty shifty but still good access for any kind of car.

Great Views

Along a National Forest Service Road are 4-5 pullouts with great views of Mono Lake and the adjacent small crater.  You can walk up the crater or hike down to the South Tufa area.

The road gets a little rough and soft after the 4th site.

Good Verizon service (4G/LTS, 4 bars).

This is a primitive campground near a unique geological and biological site.  The area is relatively pristine and we hope that it will stay this way when you visit.  Please take all trash out including TP.  Campfires are not allowed here; there are no pre-existing sites and fire rings.  The ash/sand might be a little soft for securing tents.  When there is wind, it really blows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Mono Basin Dispersed Camp Site located and what views can I expect?

Mono Basin Dispersed Camp Site is located along a National Forest Service Road near Mono Lake. The campground offers spectacular views of Mono Lake, the Eastern Sierra mountain range, and a nearby small crater. You'll find 4-5 pullouts scattered along the road, each providing a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. The sites sit on sandy bluffs that overlook the lake, giving campers panoramic vistas in nearly all directions.

Is there cell phone coverage at Mono Basin Dispersed Camp Site?

Yes, excellent cell coverage is available. Verizon users report strong 4G/LTE service with 4 bars. This makes the location ideal for remote workers or those who need to stay connected while enjoying the wilderness.

What is the best time of year to visit Mono Basin Dispersed Camp Site?

Summer months offer warm days with good breezes that help moderate the temperature. Evenings bring stronger winds that cool things down nicely. Spring and fall likely provide more moderate temperatures and potentially fewer insects. Winter camping would be challenging due to the exposed position and potential for harsh weather conditions at this elevation.

How many campsites are available and how is the privacy?

There are 4-5 pullout sites available along the Forest Service Road. The sites are well-spread out, providing good privacy for campers. Each location is positioned to take advantage of the views while maintaining distance from neighboring campers. Even when arriving late at night, you'll likely find available spaces with room for multiple vehicles at each site.

What activities are available near the campground?

You can walk up the nearby crater or hike down to the South Tufa area of Mono Lake. The location provides excellent access to explore Mono Lake and its unique tufa formations. The surrounding area offers photography opportunities, stargazing, and bird watching. The Eastern Sierra region nearby provides endless hiking, fishing, and outdoor recreation possibilities.

What facilities are available at this dispersed camping area?

This is a primitive dispersed camping area with no developed facilities. There are no restrooms, water sources, trash collection, or designated fire rings. You'll need to bring everything you need and pack out all waste. Practice Leave No Trace principles while camping here.

Are there bugs or insects I should be concerned about?

Yes, insects can be abundant, especially in summer months. Bring plenty of bug spray as visitors consistently mention the presence of bugs. The breeze helps somewhat, but adequate insect protection is still necessary for a comfortable stay.

Is this campsite suitable for longer stays?

Yes, the site works well for extended stays. Some campers report staying for several weeks comfortably. The combination of beautiful views, relative privacy, good cell service, and proximity to conveniences makes it suitable for longer-term camping. The open nature of the sites provides ample space for different setups.

What are the road conditions like? Do I need a 4WD vehicle?

The road gets progressively rougher and softer after the fourth site, with sandy sections throughout. While 4WD is not absolutely required for most sites, it would be helpful, especially for accessing some of the more remote spots. High-clearance vehicles will have an advantage navigating the terrain. Any standard car can reach the initial sites, but the ground is shifty in places, so drive carefully.

Is there shade available at the campsites?

There is limited to no tree cover at these sites. The camping area is on an open bluff, offering expansive views but minimal natural shade. Bring sunscreen and consider a canopy or awning for creating your own shade, especially during summer months.

How close is this campground to conveniences and supplies?

Conveniences including gas, groceries, restaurants, and a dump station are located within 10 miles of the campsite. This makes it easy to resupply during longer stays while still enjoying the remote feeling of the location.

How is the noise level at this campground?

The campground is generally quiet with only occasional road noise from the nearby highway. While you might hear some traffic, many visitors report that it gets quite peaceful, especially at night. The relative isolation of the pullout sites helps minimize noise from other campers.
