What to do
Beach cycling: 20+ miles of coastal paths near Newport Dunes RV Resort connect multiple beach access points. A visitor shared, "There are fantastic running/bike trails along the Back Bay. The campground is clean and right on the beach."
Waterfall hiking: 0.5-mile trail from Millard Trail Campground leads to seasonal falls. "About a 20 minute hike and you can end up at a waterfall which is very pretty. But there are several trails to take for hiking and biking and I saw lots of people doing that," notes one camper.
Tide pool exploration: Observe marine life at low tide near Crystal Cove. "The best part about this campground is definitely the beach access... you can explore some amazing tide pools and caves once you get there. The kids loved searching for hermit crabs and sea anemones," according to a regular visitor.
Wildlife viewing: Observe native bird species and marine mammals along coastal areas. "Wildlife is abundant. There is plenty of birdwatching, and coyotes were wandering through the park and campground without fear. On a hike right out of the park a few hundred yards, I came across a pair of bobcats—mom and cub—making their way to a running creek."
What campers like
Dry camping options: Dockweiler Beach RV Park offers more spacious dry camping areas compared to hookup sections. One camper noted, "The RV park has a hookup area and a dry camping area. The hookups are full of large rigs, very close one with another, in a parking lot style. The dry camp provides much more space, but only relatively small RVs."
Historical camping experiences: Military affiliated campers can access Los Alamitos Army Campground with its two distinct areas. A visitor explained, "Full hookup in both parks, Legacy (gravel for smaller RVs) and Sunset (cement spots with extra spot for a car). Legacy is a no thrills gated gravel parking lot that holds maybe 20 smaller RVs."
Tiered ocean views: Campsites at Moro Campground are arranged for maximum visibility. A regular explains, "The sites are terraced, so no matter which site you get you'll have a view of the ocean... There are about 60 camp spots and a lot of them are RVs, but it's nice because each row of 10 spots is elevated from the previous row so everyone gets a semi view."
Canyon setting: Shaded campgrounds provide relief from coastal sun. "The campground is tucked away in a beautiful canyon setting with lots of shade trees, which was really nice for keeping cool. Our site was spacious enough for our two tents and had a good fire pit and picnic table setup."
What you should know
Flight noise levels: Dockweiler campsites experience regular aircraft noise. A recent camper reported, "We loved this spot next to the beach. We got used to the planes, but they are certainly jarring at first."
Vehicle height restrictions: Some beach access points have clearance limitations. "Attention pour avoir accès à la mer, le véhicule doit faire moins de 8 feet!" warns a visitor about Crystal Cove access.
Security concerns: At Malibu Creek State Park Campground, hikers regularly pass through camping areas. "WARNING: Make sure to leave your car doors unlocked, and nothing of value inside. You'd rather have someone root through your car and walk away empty handed than have a window broken and items stolen."
Seasonal water flow: Creek and waterfall conditions vary significantly by season. "There is a stream that runs through the campground which makes it very pretty... About a 20 minute hike and you can end up at a waterfall which is very pretty."
Tips for camping with families
Beach equipment transport: Bring wagons for gear when glamping in Manhattan Beach area. "The best part about this campground is definitely the beach access- it's about a 10-minute walk from most sites... Bring a wagon if you're hauling beach gear though, as the walk can feel long with all your stuff."
Kid-friendly activities: Some sites offer organized programs and water activities. "We stay here every year. They have activities for the kids like arts and crafts, an inflatable obstacle course or you can rent paddle boards or watch a movie on the beach."
Wildlife awareness: Teach children about local wildlife safety protocols. "Squirrels are very aggressive and will eat your food if left unattended... Be careful of rattlesnakes."
Site selection strategy: For families seeking shade, research specific site numbers. "We stayed in site 59 which had a really nice shade tree and great views of a meadow and the cliffs out the back of the site."
Tips from RVers
Space limitations: Many RV sites position vehicles close together with limited privacy. "I hope you like cozy. Neighbor in campsite next to us yapped his belligerent drunken mouth all weekend."
Height-specific site recommendations: Taller RVs need specific access routes. "The roads that lead to the sites is a bit narrow, so if your towable is on the long side, you might have to work a bit to back it in. The maximum length is 38."
Wildlife protection measures: Secure all food items in provided storage. "It's in Bear country so they provide food storage for each campsite also trash containers too. Each side has a picnic bench and a fire pit."
Site reservation strategy: Book specific sites when available, as quality varies significantly. "Best sites are 125-128" at Dockweiler Beach's dry camping section, according to frequent visitors.
