      Saddle Mountain

      Glamping Approved

This place is nestled in the Carmel Valley and decently secluded. We booked a luxury gazebo situation which came with a queen bed (heated mattress) a fire pit and your own propane grill. There are areas for tents and RV’s as well and priced accordingly. The restrooms and showers are super clean and the staff is great. There is a heated pool and various hiking trails to keep you occupied. The only downfall is you’re a little close to other campers. You don’t get much space/privacy but it’s not too bad. I would come back for sure.

Lower Blooms Creek — Big Basin Redwoods State Park — CAMPGROUND CLOSED

Idyllic campground close to loads of beauty

We stayed here with our 2 dogs last November as a nice winter getaway from L.A. We got one of the tent cabins, which are just adorable and so cozy. The sites are nice and distanced from each other, bathrooms were in great shape and it was pet friendly. We got a package with the tent cabin that came with bedding, cooking utensils and firewood, so were pretty much set once we got there. The beds are comfy and the wood burning stove (photo attached) is the only source of heat. It is neat but BE WARNED...it gets COLD on those winter nights so make sure you a) have enough wood; b) are good at keeping fires going throughout the night; and c) have lots of dry wood. The wood that was left for us as part of our package was really wet and wouldn't burn so we had a very chilly night even with loads of sleeping bags and blankets. Other than that, we had a great experience and got to take the dogs for a great walk on the paved trails in the State Park. Can't wait to go back!

      Saddle Mountain

      Camp or glamp

This is a fun little hideaway with a heated pool, but it still feels like camping. Bathrooms with showers, a sauna by the pool, some food all and communal fire pits/couches to lounge on. friendly staff on site who are helpful but not intrusive. Highly recommend going here, our site on the hill was breathtaking views and extremely private. Highly recommend!

      .

I have come here since I was a kid with my Dad. This was the cheapest way to stay with a family in Monterey/Carmel. You will drive through a country residential area that does not look like there would be a campground then all of a sudden you take a turn and you’re in a nice wooded, shady place on a hill. The best of both worlds in the hills outside of Carmel but still close to town and beaches. They have glamping tents, cabins, and small tent camping spots. There is not room for more than two small and medium tents. Camp sites are not very private but they are clean. Kids love the pool and game areas and begged to stay longer and come back. Bathrooms are very nice and clean with hot water. I recommend if you want to take a family trip to Monterey or Carmel to check this place out. Only downside was I missed seeing and hearing the peacocks that I remember as a kid.

      Gilroy Garlic USA RV Park

      Exceedingly Ok

All spots on the perimeter are full timers. VERY cluttered campsites all around you makes the park feel claustrophobic.

If that wasn’t enough the daily/weekly spots on the interior are right on top of each other. Expect your neighbor’s sewer connection to be right next to your stairs when you come out of your unit.

Never saw or interacted with any employees, the only interaction was an email with my spot number. Not a positive or negative, just a note. Daily/weekly campers seemed nice, however received dirty looks from pretty much every full timer just walking the dog or driving to/from my unit. I like to wave at folks as I go by, I guess they don’t like that.

Speaking of walking the dog, there’s a large grass area on the west side with big signs that say no pets. The only spot of grass I could find that wasn’t “forbidden for dogs” is a small patch between the entrance/exit lanes to the park, no fence and watch for vehicles coming and going.

Overall this place is probably fine to drop anchor for the night, we stayed a weekend to enjoy Gilroy Gardens and will definitely find somewhere else to go next time.

Lower Blooms Creek — Big Basin Redwoods State Park — CAMPGROUND CLOSED

Summer Family Fun at Big Basin

We visited the Big Basin Redwoods State Park late July this year with a large group of friends and their families and it was such an awesome experience. We stayed in a tent cabin at the Huckleberry campground which was nicer than we thought it would be. It had just the right amount of space for my wife and I, our two daughters and all our gear. The entire campground is loaded with trees so there was plenty of shade everywhere. There's also a few decent hiking trails close to the campground which is really cool and convenient. My daughters enjoyed every minute from the hiking, riding their bikes, campfires as well as all the other great things to do when camping. We also explored the Visitor Center to see some of the most magnificent dinosaur-like redwoods including what they call the 'Father of the Forest' and 'Mother of the Forest' trees. The guide was an encyclopedia of information on the massive trees which he shared with us along the tour. If you're at all interested, then you must go on the short tour. The only complaint I have is about the one night there were what seemed to be very loud college students, probably from UC Santa Cruz or another nearby college, who were in the cabin at the site next to ours and were partying way too hard. We had to tell them to keep it down since they had woken us up. I'm all for a little partying, but damn, they were loud and no one came around to tell them to keep it down besides us. Other than that, all in all, we had a great tent cabin campsite and did notice some even better in the campground, so we will definitely be going back again.

      Mount Madonna County Park

      Very nice campground

Nice area ,lots of trails into redwoods and cedar trees, campsites were very roomy and flatish. Water was available, bathroom was clean.Nice place to get away from the heat. MAKE SURE YOU LOCK UP YOUR VEHICLE, campground seems to attract people who like to rip off campers. Our car and or good friends car was  liberated, my phone, trailer monitor, small charging cables and a pair of small binoculars. Also removed was our extra luggage that had extra clothes and some souvenirs from our German trip. Needless to say the Rangers were simathetic, we weren't the first in this campground, there were previous thefts at different times.

LOCK UP YOUR VEHICLES SIGNS ARE NOT PRESENT IN THE CAMPGROUND AREA.

      Costanoa Coastal Lodge & Campground

      Luxury coastal camping

General: Many different options: pull-thru and back-in FHU sites, tent sites, bungalows, tent bungalows, cabins, and a lodge. Note that in early 2025, ownership changed and it is no longer a KOA.

Site Quality: As would be expected in an RV park, the sites are very close together with little to no foliage to separate them. The sites in the Eucalyptus loop where we were had back-in sites, with a paved driveway, and are level. The sites have a picnic table, a fire ring, and wood-fenced platforms. What is confusing is that the platforms and tables are not always directly behind the site. They are labeled with the site number, but again, they are close together, and if the campground is crowded, there is no privacy. Bath/Shower: There are two bathhouses for the RV sites. Each gender has one shower, three toilets, and two sinks with soap and paper towels. They were immaculate. I was lucky not to have to wait for a shower, but if full, I heard there are waits.

Activities/Amenities: There is a spa on site, but we did not check it out (not sure if you need to be a lodge guest to use). Other amenities include a restaurant (which was fantastic), general store, sauna, meeting space, playground, giant Jenga and chess board, and community fire pits. You can rent bikes, golf carts, and dune buggies. On weekends and in season, there are other activities and a bar cart that makes the rounds.

This is not our preferred type of camping, and it is expensive, but we enjoyed time here as we met family for a couple of days.

    Guide to Davenport

Yurt camping near Davenport, California provides access to redwood forests sitting above the fog line at elevations between 1,500-2,000 feet. The coastal region experiences temperature fluctuations of 20-30 degrees between day and night, with summer highs around 75°F and winter lows in the 40s. Most campgrounds in this area remain open year-round, though several close temporarily during extreme weather events.

    What to do

Hiking redwood trails: At Big Basin Redwoods State Park, trails lead to impressive waterfalls. "Best thing about this campground is proximity to the Berry Creek Falls... a huge series of water falls on a super long and strenuous hike," notes Andrew D. The park features miles of hiking options for various skill levels.

Archery practice: Mount Madonna County Park offers a unique 28-target archery trail through the woods. "There is an archery trail with 28 targets on a trail through the woods. We were there 3 days in a row and did 20 of the 28. It's really pretty and a cool challenge," shares April N.

Tide pool exploration: The beaches near Sunset State Beach offer excellent tide pooling opportunities during low tide. "A great beach to relax on, sometimes there's surf here too," mentions J.d. E. The beach stretches for miles with relatively few visitors on weekdays.

White deer viewing: Near the ranger station at Mount Madonna, visitors can see the remaining white fallow deer. These are descendants from the exotic zoo at William Randolph Hearst's mansion. "Near the ranger station there are pens with white fallow deer," explains a reviewer.

    What campers like

Natural pest control: The redwood ecosystems help minimize certain pests. "This is the only place I've seen the redwood trees harvest the fog and make their own rain, which is pretty cool. In the morning it's raining under the redwood trees but not under the madrone or tan oak trees, which is wild," observes April N. at Mount Madonna County Park.

Private spots: At Sanborn County Park, sites higher up the hill offer more seclusion. "Some campgrounds have tables and others don't - some are too close to others but the higher up hill, you're closer to the trail heads," explains Ellice O. The park provides carts to help transport gear to walk-in sites.

Year-round access: Most Davenport area yurt camping and tent sites remain accessible in winter. "We camped here in the winter and had no reservations, but got a good spot anyway. Winter can be a very nice weekend!" notes Pete M. about his stay at Sunset State Beach.

Secluded coastal views: Less-visited spots provide solitude. "Dispersed camping outside the campground perimeters. Very quiet and this is the place if solitude is your thing. Bring lots of water. Walk in or 4wd accessible. Never have seen another human here," shares Lisa A. about Sunrise Point.

    What you should know

Insect preparation: Bug spray is essential, particularly in summer months. "The ONE nit I have is that the lack of air movement during the summer = LOTS of bites. I highly recommend camping in the spring or fall if you are prone to welt-y bug bites," advises Tai W. about Big Basin.

Temperature variations: The mountain areas are significantly colder than nearby towns. "It is a LOT colder here than on the valley floor. Prepare for it to be 40deg colder than Gilroy or San Jose," warns a camper at Mount Madonna. Pack additional layers even for summer camping.

Limited cell service: Most campgrounds have minimal connectivity. "WiFi like always is iffy and ATT is limited. 1 bar at site 30," notes Rowan B. at Santa Cruz KOA. Some parks offer WiFi near bathroom facilities or entrance areas.

Wildlife encounters: Skunks and raccoons are common visitors. "We suffered the consequences when we awoke to a family of raccoons raiding the box," reports Austin C. at Sunset State Beach. Always secure food in provided storage lockers.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay KOA Holiday offers numerous structured activities. "This KOA is great for a family getaway. TONS of activities on site- huge bouncy pad, a climbing wall, ping pong tables, a swimming pool, pedal go karts, the list goes on and on," says Daniel D.

Biking opportunities: Mount Madonna provides safe biking areas for children. "Great campground for the kids to bike at but there are a few big hills so make sure they know how to use their brakes," advises Weston W.

Creek exploration: Uvas Canyon County Park offers creek access that children enjoy. "Small waterfalls are the highlights of the trail, but kids will enjoy playing in the water on hot days," says a reviewer. The park features waterfalls connected by relatively short hiking trails.

Wheelchair access: Several campgrounds offer accessible sites and facilities. "Bathrooms are great" and "lots of space with bathrooms very accessible" note reviewers at different parks, making the area suitable for family members with mobility considerations.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategies: At Seacliff State Beach, waterfront sites are highly coveted. "Yes, your rig is within 20' of the beach at all campsites," confirms Serge B. Book months in advance for these premium locations.

Leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at many campgrounds. "If you plan to sleep in your car, you may want to take leveling blocks as I found the car parking spot to be not leveled at all," suggests Mon M. about Uvas Canyon.

RV space limitations: Sites vary significantly in size and accessibility. "RV sites are basically parking lot with 4' strips of grass in between," notes daren W. at Sanborn County Park. Most sites accommodate smaller rigs under 30 feet, with limited options for larger vehicles.

Hookup availability: Electric and water connections vary by park. "The RV area has ~20 sites. They all have water and 30 amps hookups," reports Ignasi M. Always verify specific hookup options when making reservations for yurt camping near Davenport, California.
