Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country

Really nice place, but lots of rules (maybe that’s why it’s so nice)

We really enjoyed this RV park. For an expensive (to us) place with lots of amenities and lots of rules, it still had a really peaceful, calm, and friendly vibe. The guests were all friendly and chatty, staff was friendly, and the place was really clean and nicely cared for.

With our Passport America discount, we paid $40 (this included tax) for a standard site (on decomposed granite v. the more expensive paved sites). There are also some cottages / small houses available for rent.

Sites have a grill and picnic table and 30 and 50 amp power.

    Amenities:

    - laundry room: $2.75 for wash and $1.50 for dry. Soap dispenser for $1. Iron and ironing board available for use for free. Quarters available in office.

    - Small take a book / leave a book table in laundry room.

    - pool and spa: one open, and one closed for covid

    - fitness room: open

    - clean free showers

    - free cable

    - free wifi (fast!)

    - 2 small enclosed dog yards with gravel and poop bags.

    - fires are allowed, but park doesn't provide fire pits or firewood. Must bring own self-contained fire pit

    - bulk propane fill at $3.50/gal. Filling hours are currently 10am-noon and 2-4pm

    - water bottle filling stations

    - dumpster and mixed recycling bin

    - we saw a skoolie parked here; no rv discrimination!

    - various outdoor hangout areas: bbq, wine bar, etc (closed for covid).

    - small nice store at registration desk with basic food items, ice, camping and rv supplies, gifts and souvenirs

    - playground

No dump station here, and use of sewer connection is for guests only.

Vines RV Resort, A Sun RV Resort

    Not Luxury

“Luxury RV Sites” not so much I’m not sure why they claim luxury.

It’s just cement pads on top of each other so no one has any privacy from their neighbors. Definitely not worth the$1600 a month to stay here. You would think for$1600 there would be more and better options offered.

It is a very clean campground, I will give them that. It says it includes a picnic table at the back in sites and we were there for 3 months and never saw 1 picnic table.

We are dog friendly people, we did not travel with our dogs, the campground is full of dogs which is great, our daughter loved it. Except there was constant barking from all over the campground. My neighbors dogs barked multiple times a day and multiple times at night, constantly waking us all up in the middle of the night and my daughter during her nap midday.

They do not enforce their own quiet hour rule. Like I said dogs were constantly barking, people playing loud music, loud diesel pickups and playing loud music driving throughout the campground.

They offer a great pool area, one bigger pool but it’s always in the shade because of the big solar panels they built. And one smaller pool in full sun which is nice. But it doesn’t matter because the water is so cold there’s no way we would ever try to take our toddlers swimming in those pools. There’s also a large jacuzzi in the shade.

It is a family friendly campground unless you have kids that nap during the day. It is very noisy. Not to mention it is located right along the freeway so you’re constantly hearing the roaring vehicle and truck sounds from that.

They had some tiny homes lining the outside of the campground that they were removing, I’m assuming to make more room for RVs. Which is great Monday-Friday. Then they were removing them Saturday and Sunday as well. Sunday is my husbands only day off and the only full day we get to spend together as a family. And we got to spend our beautiful Sunday sitting outside with our toddler playing and grilling, while listening to the banging and hammering and the loud trucks taking out the tiny homes on a SUNDAY.

They do have an awesome building by the pool that offers use of a play/game room, kitchen, grills, and dining room. Which is great but it’s constantly filled with people who are not staying in the campground on the weekends, so the people that are staying there and paying for the amenities can’t use it on the weekends.

Like I said, definitely not worth the$1600 monthly fees for long term living. If you’re here for just a night or two might not be that big of a deal. When we first got here we were told it would be$1400 monthly payments and not even a month in we get a call that they are raising the rates to$1600. Quite a joke of a“RV Resort”.

    Mercey Hot Springs

    Amazing Place

I Van Camped at Mercey Hot Springs for 5 days. When I arrived the nights were hot so I decided to take an AC Cabin #10 where I could park right next to the cabin and slept comfortably. I moved to a RV camp site #5 when the temps at night were a more comfortable mid 60s. I love that the hot tubs are available all night long. It allows for long soaks while star gazing. The therapeutic water is magical some of the best I have found. As soon as you enter the pool or hot tubs you feel the smooth water on your skin. The hot tubs are all oversized privet bath tubs that you fill with mineral water of your desired temperature. This is a completely off the grid resorts that has good energy and tranquil atmosphere. It is very clean with clean bath rooms and showers. When I was there in June 2024 they did not have the restaurant open yet but one looks like it is in the near future. They do have snacks, cold drinks, coffee, ice cream and Ice in the front office for purchase. I took the short hike up the hill to see the solar array, while up there I discovered a most amazing triple Labyrinth circle walk that was very mindful experience. I have never seen such a neat labyrinth as this. Truly an amazing stay, I will be back.

    Almond Tree Oasis RV Park

Great park to get some shuteye and be refreshed for your next adventure.

It’s hot!! In the summer this place is very hot. However, there are full hookups to run your AC and there are two saltwater pools to jump into. We stopped at this park for one night, twice as a halfway point between southern and northern California. Right off the I-5 freeway next to a Shell and Valero gas station. All sites are pull throughs and we found the gravel to be very level. We did not unhitch for a early morning exit. Bathrooms and showers are cleaned regularly. A rain and windstorm came through in the middle of the night and palm and almond tree leaves were in the pool but by 9am it was cleaned up. The staff is friendly and responsive, and they have a little store that includes some RV supplies such as hoses. Want a quick meal? There is a Baja Fresh and Subway in the Shell gas station next store. Great park to get some shuteye and be refreshed for your next adventure.

    Lake Nacimiento Resort

    Camping by Lake Nacimiento

This lake and the one up the road, San Antonio Lake , are very popular motor boating locations in north San Luis Obispo County. Camping in the summer months are very hot and crowded and not cheap. On the positive side, the lake is huge with narrow passages where you can get off the main lake and fish or just have fun. Jet skis, kayaks etc are permitted. There is a beach for kids near the marina area campground. The campground is part of the private Lake Nacimiento Resort located near the marina and extends along the shore toward the dam with various types of sites. Some sites have direct access to your temporarily moored boat. It gets a bit noisy in the evening as college students party after a long fun day on the lake. All services are available even a store. Three stars for noise and crowds and prices ( tents 35$ hookups 50$, plus pet fee, vehicle fee, etc.)

Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort

    Always a great stay

We have stayed there 4 times, in all seasons actually. A nice glamping spot, clean and well organized. With pool and other amenities, it is great for kids and without kids. We have had different sites, back in with open space, even a bobcat sighting. We have had sites more in the middle and all are very good. We have another trip there already on the books.

    Lake Nacimiento Resort

    Great scenery! Well-maintained sites

Overall, the privately-owned sites at Lake Nacemiento resort are good - but you'll probably want to get one of the reserved spots! They are further away from the boat launch, general store, etc, and can be much quieter (depending on who your neighbors are, of course!) If you call for reservations, the staff are quite helpful, and they can even describe some of the attributes of the sites. For example, we stayed at the Sandy Point campground, which was quite close to the water, and they helped me find a site big enough for our group. BUT! be sure to ask about which sites are more secluded - some of the sites are right next to each other, some are a bit more private.

    Almond Tree Oasis RV Park

    A true oasis

My job in agriculture brought me to the area to visit farms nearby. I was glad to find the Almond Tree, which turned out to be a perfect base camp for the week. It is truly a little oasis in a vast agricultural landscape without many lodging options or attractions. And my Dyrt PRO membership discount saved me about $40 on my stay!

This was my first RV park experience. Most of the spaces around me were filled, although it was very quiet and peaceful. The facilities were cleaned daily. The pool was closed and hot water was out in one of the bathhouses. There is wifi, although I was having trouble keeping a steady connection so I ended up using my hotspot anyway. The few interactions I had with staff and other guests were pleasant. Everyone seems to mostly keep to themselves here.

There are two gas stations immediately next to the park with convenience stores and fast food. Driving 10-15 minutes in any direction, there are towns with all services. The Harris Ranch Restaurant is the destination for steaks and gift shopping.

The Almond Tree Oasis has an excellent website with all the details of amenities and nearby attractions. They also have an after hours kiosk for late check-in and provide an email confirmation with all the passwords and security codes. I made a last minute reservation by phone and they had my packet waiting for me when I arrived.

    Almond Tree Oasis RV Park

    Scrupulously clean, near I-5

People who run the place are very nice. Everything is very very clean. Gravel sites, not a lot of trees. We didn't use the laundry but the machines looked spotless.

This is probably more of a place to stop between SF and LA, as there's not a lot to do nearby. Harris Ranch is one exit away on I-5 with barbeque and a well known restaurant.

While we were there The Dyrt ran a speed test on the WiFi using our connection. We used the free wifi, not the better wifi you can pay for. That regular wifi was fine for us even though The Dyrt rates it as slow.

Our site was near the edge of the property, near an orchard.

Guide to Coalinga

Cabin camping near Coalinga, California provides access to a region with mild spring and fall temperatures but extreme summer heat often exceeding 105°F. The cabin properties sit in a transition zone between the San Joaquin Valley's agricultural flatlands and the foothills of the Diablo Range. During peak summer months, many visitors specifically seek cabin accommodations to avoid tent camping in triple-digit temperatures.

What to do

**Wine tasting tours: Vinyl Vineyards offers cabin accommodations on a working vineyard property, allowing guests to sample local vintages without driving after tasting. "Jake from the Dyrt here! We're excited to have this campground on the Dyrt and ready for you to book, check them out and make sure to leave a review!"

**Water sports at lakes: San Antonio Lake stretches 17 miles with multiple shorelines accessible for boating and fishing. "The first time I went to Lake San Antonio was with a birdwatching group looking for bald eagles. It was another hot summer and the water level of the lake was low. That didn't deter the eagles as they flew across the lake to try to dive down and catch a fish," shares one visitor at Monterey County Lake San Antonio South Shore.

**Boating access: Campers can keep boats directly at their sites at certain lake properties. "We launched the boat and anchored it to shore. Literally had the place to ourselves. Fishing was great from shore in morning and dusk," notes one visitor to Lake San Antonio North Shore.

What campers like

**Clean facilities: Many cabin properties maintain high standards despite heavy usage. "The bathrooms are always clean and the showers are hot, the pools are clean and always open, the gym has new equipment and the game room is stocked for a good time," reports a guest at Vines RV Resort.

**Convenience of overnight stops: Cabin locations along the I-5 corridor provide good alternatives to hotels. "This is a great location halfway between northern and southern California along I5. Clean and not too busy so we were nicely spaced out," notes one visitor at Almond Tree Oasis RV Park.

**Proximity to wineries: The Paso Robles wine region offers multiple cabin options near tasting rooms. "Close to Paso Robles. Have a pool and hot tub but have not used them," mentions a visitor to Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country.

What you should know

**Temperature extremes: Summer conditions can be challenging without cooling systems. "It was a warm weekend at San Antonio. The temperature at the lake often exceeds 100 in the summer. There is ample space for camping. You'll need reservations if you want a hookup," advises a visitor at Lake San Antonio - North Shore.

**Water conditions: Lake levels fluctuate seasonally and during drought years. "During the drought the water level has dropped significantly as well as the quality of the water. Some years the lake is almost dry."

**Potential water restrictions: Recent conditions have affected some properties. "There is no potable water available, not even a water fountain. People and animals cannot touch the water. You cannot fish or swim in the lake. There is no reduction in price. This may be temporary, but it has been this way for at least a year."

Tips for camping with families

**Cabin spacing: Understand site proximity when booking for families with children. "The sites are spacious enough to enjoy outside time with friends and family and it's a perfect place to come escape from all the noise of life," notes a visitor to Vines RV Resort.

**Kid-friendly amenities: Some properties offer dedicated recreation areas. "They also have a great playground for the kids," shares a visitor about Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort.

**Site selection for shade: Carefully research individual cabin locations for summer stays. "Our campsite was pretty ideal! We were in pine knoll with a great view of the lake! We scored with the size of our site! Our site was shaded all morning and all afternoon."

Tips from RVers

**Mixed group accommodations: Properties with both RV sites and cabins allow for different camping preferences. "They also have cabins you can rent if friends want to go but they don't have a trailer," notes a visitor to Sun Outdoors Central Coast Wine Country.

**Check-in procedures: Some properties offer after-hours arrival options. "The Almond Tree Oasis has an excellent website with all the details of amenities and nearby attractions. They also have an after hours kiosk for late check-in and provide an email confirmation with all the passwords and security codes."

**Highway noise considerations: Some properties are more affected by traffic noise than others. "Far enough off of route 5 that there is very little highway noise. Very convenient to get to from the highway."
