    Spicer Meadow Sno-Park

California Sno-Park for boondocking near Bear Valley CA

The Spicer Meadow Sno-Park is primarily a place for families to play in the snow. By purchasing a Sno-Pass ($40 for all Sno-Parks for the season), visitors may spend a couple nights camping during the snow season.

In addition to snow play (family play, XC skiing, dog sledding, snowmobiling), the park is a few miles south of Bear Valley Cross Country skiing and about ten miles south of Bear Valley Resort (downhill skiing).

I parked and camped here in my van (with my pass) on January 6 2026. There were families playing in the snow when I arrived just before dark. This was a week day so the parking lot was only half full. I parked well away from where most of the families were playing. Within an hour, my vehicle was the only one in the lot.

The lot had been plowed recently. It was pretty level. The only service was a pit toilet. My T-Mobile service was two bars.

I don't know if camping is permitted in the summer. I'm pretty sure camping OUTSIDE your vehicle is not allowed.

Yosemite Pines RV Resort & Family Lodging

    Good Place for Kids

With a pool, petting zoo, a corral where they have a fire and s'mores followed by a movie, this is a great place to camp with the kids.

The showers are free and usually clean although on Saturday evening the campground was full and the bathrooms were dirty and out of TP.

There are tent sites, RV sites and cabins so something for everyone.

There were A LOT of stray cats on the property which kind of drove our dog crazy. But at least the campground is pet friendly.

If you plan to go into Yosemite NP, it's a long drive so plan accordingly. Our family really enjoys Rainbow Pools and Yosemite Pine's proximity to Rainbow Pools is part of why we stay here. The kids can jump and swim there and that's all they really want to do anyway so being close to that is key for us. So many of the places in the park where we used to get in the water do not allow swimming anymore.

    Bear Valley Dispersed Camping

    Great place to dispersed camping!

Bear valley is my favorite place to go camping, the most you get close to the top of the mountain, the most curvy the road is, so be prepare. There is a point where the paved road disappears and is only dirt road, you can keep driving as far as you want, it is easy to find a good spot to park and set your camp. The night views are amazing!

    Big Meadow Campground

    Beautiful campground

Our family camped at this campground many times every summer when my children were young.

The campground is first come first serve. We were always able to find a good spot coming on Friday after work. The camp sites are spaced out nice so your neighboring campers aren't super close. The toiles are the vaulted ones and were well maintained.

Its close to Lake Alpine and Bear Valley about 15-20 mins up the road.

There's a very special camp spot at this campground that is hidden gem. There's a native American grinding rock right at the site with a breathtaking view. To find this spot. Enter the campground and make a right. The very back of this loop, the outside side, close to the back toilet.

    Tahoe Valley Campground

    Nice but crowded

The area is nice, it is not near the lake but the lake is only a small drive away. The place is crowded and they pack you in here, but our site (113) was a nice place in the corner. There are much better sites with more room near the dog park if you are looking for more space.

    Tahoe Valley Campground

    Easy and Central

We came into south lake to visit family. This campground is right in town but there’s enough space and trees to give it a natural setting. Bathrooms are great and it’s pretty quiet considering it’s popular. Looks great for families and there’s a dog park, pool and trails.

    Topaz Lodge RV Park

    Great place

I really liked this place. I stayed a month and wouldn't have minded staying longer.

The General Store had lots of supplies, and they gave RV customers a discount on "souvenirs".

I didn't use the showers or restrooms (although I did pay the $10, refundable, deposit for a key).

    The staff was extremely nice.

There are plenty of trash cans around the park. They are emptied almost daily.

Pets are welcome. Dogs must be on leashes and picked up after. (There were lots of people there with dogs and/or cats.)

The spaces are roomy and each space has a picnic table. However, there was no grass, except near the hotel and near the horseshoe pits. (So, no grass at the sites.) Also, there wasn't much shade. ☹️ Sites are quite level, and are graveled. Hookups were very accessible.

The view of the lake was beautiful. However, I had to drive about 5 miles (to the County Park) in order to actually get to the water. ☹️. This would have been very inconvenient, if I hadn't had a toad.

All in all, I really enjoyed my stay at this park.

    Thousand Trails Yosemite Lakes

    Yosemite Lakes RV Resort, CA

This campground is the most convenient location when visiting Yosemite National Park. It snowed while we were there and the giant trees looked beautiful. Only one out of the two bathrooms was in service. The WiFi service was non existent unless you sat in the laundry room Near the welcome center. About a mile from the campground itself there is a camp store that had anything you may have forgotten and great souvenirs. There’s a playground, but no dog park.

Guide to Bear Valley

Dispersed camping is available near Bear Valley at elevations between 4,500 and 7,500 feet, with most sites located along unpaved forest roads. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F during the day and 40-50°F at night. The terrain features a mix of granite outcroppings and dense pine forest with abundant wildlife.

What to do

Kayak at Utica Reservoir: The reservoir offers calm water perfect for paddling with no motorized boats permitted. Paddle to islands for private camping. "We canoed and SUP camped here. You can find beautiful, isolated sites on the islands all around the lake. Great hammock camping!" according to a visitor at Utica Campgrounds.

Fish for trout: Pinecrest Lake provides productive fishing grounds accessible by shore or boat. "We used a size ten Tribble hook with about a foot leader and pinch weights with rainbow powerbait for those that want to catch fish for lunch," shares a camper who stayed at Pinecrest Campground.

Night sky viewing: High elevation and minimal light pollution create excellent stargazing conditions. "Perfect spot for star gazing!! We arrived when it was dark and had no problem finding a spot! It was open with plenty of spots & we were the only ones!" notes a reviewer about Bear Valley Dispersed Camping.

What campers like

Secluded island camping: Many campers appreciate the solitude of paddle-in sites. "The views from this place are amazing. The abandoned ski lifts are pretty cool to look at and hike along them as well," shares a visitor to Iron MT. Dispersed camping area.

Natural hot springs: Thermal pools provide relaxation after hiking. "This place was gorgeous. A big meadow. Lots of rocks and trees. Nice easy hike to a waterfall or to the additional cost clothing required hot springs," notes a camper at Grover Hot Springs State Park Campground.

Wildflowers and rare plants: Spring and early summer bring unique flora. "There are snow flowers every wear early in the season," explains a reviewer about Silver Lake West, referring to the rare snow plant that emerges after snowmelt.

What you should know

Campsite availability: Weekdays offer better options for securing spots. "Weekdays are the best if you want to find an actual campsite and avoid most of the crowds. Saturday nights are terrible now as lately large groups overcrowd campsites," advises a camper who stayed at Utica/Union Reservoirs.

Bear activity: Food storage is essential throughout the region. "Bear came through our camp one night hit the Bear box and walked off. Rangers were friendly and very informative about the area," reports a visitor to North Grove Campground at Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

Pin accuracy issues: GPS coordinates for some dispersed sites may be incorrect. "So disappointing this app has failed us like 5 times now on camping spots. Not the right location," warns a camper about Bear Valley Dispersed Camping.

Tips for camping with families

Family-friendly hiking: Look for shorter trails with minimal elevation gain. "The hike around the lake was beautiful too, roughly 2-3 hr hike with some great views," suggests a visitor to Pinecrest Campground.

Evening entertainment: Some campgrounds offer organized activities. "The kids really love the Amphitheatre where they play pretty good family friendly movies," shares a camper at Pinecrest Campground.

Shallow swimming areas: Reservoir edges provide safe spaces for younger children. "A little bay area ish, aka yuppy. But nice and quiet and dispersed. Quick walk to the lake and fishing," notes a camper at Silver Lake West.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookups: Most campgrounds offer no electric connections. "This campground is always amazing but there is no hookups which we always prefer," mentions a visitor to Pinecrest Campground.

Narrow access roads: Some camping areas have difficult approach routes. "The pads if you are pulling a trailer or in a RV are narrow. As are the roads. We watched several people come real close to dropping into a ditch," warns a camper from Grover Hot Springs State Park Campground.

Generator restrictions: Several pet friendly camping areas near Bear Valley restrict generator use. Iron Mountain Dispersed Camping provides flat sites that accommodate larger vehicles without noise restrictions, and several campers note the area is good for RVs seeking more space than established campgrounds provide.
