Primitive, but Tucked Away

Very basic campsites with a picnic table, fire ring, bear box, and access to a pit toilet. The setting of the campground is gorgeous with all of the exposed rock and large trees. Campsites can be booked online, and some are available first-come-first-serve as far as I understand. The campsite allows generators which is unfortunate for tent campers seeking quiet. For less noise, book sites near the back of the campground (sites 30 and up). Great mid-distance location for visiting both Sequoia and King's Canyon!

Beautiful campground

Our family camped at this campground many times every summer when my children were young.

The campground is first come first serve. We were always able to find a good spot coming on Friday after work. The camp sites are spaced out nice so your neighboring campers aren't super close. The toiles are the vaulted ones and were well maintained.

Its close to Lake Alpine and Bear Valley about 15-20 mins up the road.

There's a very special camp spot at this campground that is hidden gem. There's a native American grinding rock right at the site with a breathtaking view. To find this spot. Enter the campground and make a right. The very back of this loop, the outside side, close to the back toilet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What group camping facilities are available at Big Meadow Campground?

Big Meadow Campground offers basic individual campsites rather than dedicated group facilities. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and bear box for food storage. The campsites are well-spaced, providing good privacy from neighboring campers. For large groups, you may need to reserve multiple adjacent campsites. Contact the Stanislaus National Forest office for current information about accommodating larger groups at this location.

Where is Big Meadow Campground located in Stanislaus National Forest?

Big Meadow Campground is situated in the Stanislaus National Forest, characterized by its beautiful setting among exposed rock formations and large trees. The campground offers a picturesque natural environment typical of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It's a serene location that provides an excellent base for exploring the surrounding forest area. For specific directions and GPS coordinates, contact the Stanislaus National Forest ranger district office before your trip.

Is dispersed camping allowed near Big Meadow Campground?

Dispersed camping is generally permitted in Stanislaus National Forest areas outside of developed campgrounds, following Forest Service regulations. When seeking dispersed camping near Big Meadow Campground, campers must typically stay at least 100-200 feet from water sources, developed recreation areas, and roads. Always practice Leave No Trace principles, use existing fire rings where permitted, and check current fire restrictions. Contact the local ranger district office before your trip for specific regulations and any seasonal closures affecting dispersed camping in the area.

What is the elevation of Big Meadow Campground and how does it affect camping conditions?

Big Meadow Campground sits at a higher elevation in the Sierra Nevada range, which significantly impacts camping conditions. The elevation creates cooler temperatures, especially at night, even during summer months. Campers should pack warm clothing for evenings and be prepared for potential temperature swings. The higher altitude also means thinner air, more intense sun exposure during the day, and possibly more difficult breathing for those accustomed to lower elevations. Weather conditions can change rapidly, so come prepared with layers and proper gear.
