Devil's Den State Park offers horse-friendly camping accommodations in the scenic Ozark Mountains at elevations ranging from 800 to 2,200 feet. Located 53 miles southwest of Greenland, Arkansas, the park features valleys and hollows creating natural trail systems for equestrian use. Trail conditions vary seasonally with summer temperatures reaching 90°F and winter dropping to below freezing.
What to Do
Hiking and trail exploration: Yellow Rock trail outside Devil's Den State Park Campground provides views from elevated rock formations. "The large rock 'mountain' it leads you too are so much fun to play on. They have tiny caves and are incredibly easy to craw around on," reports CJ C.
Trout fishing: Roaring River State Park provides dedicated fishing zones with clear regulations. "Trout fishing is good for all ages and day fishing licenses are available and hiking trails are great. Cell phone service works depending on provider and there is a store to buy essentials and souvenirs," explains Sandi C.
Rock climbing and bouldering: Horseshoe Canyon Ranch offers multiple climbing routes for beginners through experts. "Horseshoe canyon is one of the biggest climbing and bouldering locations in the southeast area. Beautiful pastures and surrounded by rock that hundreds come to visit," notes Luke O.
What Campers Like
Water access: Steel Creek Campground provides direct Buffalo River access for cooling off during summer months. "You can see beautiful bluff from the campground. The campsites are all in a big grassy field which I love. There are trails to the river nearby and a great swimming hole," shares Lindsey P.
Ranch settings for horse owners: Wilderness Rider Buffalo Ranch combines equestrian facilities with natural surroundings. "We have been going here over 3 years and try to go 3 or 4 times a year. They continue to upgrade trails and add beautiful camping spots," states Leslie D.
Proximity to wilderness: Byrd's Adventure Center offers equestrian camping near Greenland with trail access directly from sites. "The river runs right through the property. There are a ton of trails to explore. They have a store and restaurant on site. The trip out there is amazing," according to Desiree Y.
What You Should Know
Cell service limitations: Coverage varies significantly between providers. "There's no cell service whatsoever but Wifi (paid) is offered by the park. Make sure to stock up on supplies beforehand - there are not many options within that area as far as food and services," warns Gonzo A. at Devil's Den State Park Campground.
Seasonal closures: Several equestrian campgrounds experience periodic closures. "Campground is currently (April 7) closed for maintenance and flooding. Call before you go!" advises Jo at Devil's Den.
Site selection strategy: Some campgrounds offer better sites than others. "If you want the best experience - grab one of the sites along the ridge (83, 85, 87) - these have a great view off the back and offer incredible space," recommends Gonzo A.
Tips for Camping with Families
Consider humidity levels: Summer conditions can be challenging for younger campers. "Aside from the extreme humidity this was a great family getaway. Pool, great trails, and the creek/river kept my kids entertained and worn out!" shares Melissa M. about Devil's Den State Park.
Pack insect protection: The region's thick forests harbor abundant insects. "Make sure and bring lots of bug spray," advises CJ C.
Select campgrounds with amenities: Chicken Creek Campground offers facilities suitable for children. "All campsites are equipped with electric hookups, and the group shelters have electricity, too. Flush toilets, hot showers, water hydrants, a swim beach, playground, dump station and a boat ramp complex playground," notes N I.
Tips from RVers
Road access considerations: Approach routes matter for larger rigs accessing equestrian camping near Greenland. "If you have a large rig - make sure to take the West Fork exit off I-49 vs. the south exit (Winslow)," advises Gonzo A.
Sewer hose preparation: Rivers Edge RV Park requires specific setups. "We had to buy an extra sewer hose to connect to sewer, as it was placed so far toward entrance of the site, rather than toward rear of site where electric and water were appropriately placed," explains David B.
Age restrictions exist: Some parks limit older RVs. "This RV park has a 10 year rule. Any RV over 10 years old must be approved by the manager. She asked for exterior pictures only," warns Philip C. about Rivers Edge RV and Stables.
