Best Campgrounds near Show Low, AZ

Show Low, Arizona provides a variety of camping areas within the White Mountains region, ranging from lakeside developed campgrounds to dispersed options in surrounding forest lands. Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area Campground stands as a centerpiece camping destination, offering both tent and RV sites with lake views. Additional options include Show Low Lake Campground and several RV-focused properties like K-Bar RV Resort and Waltner's RV Resort. The area balances proximity to town services with natural settings, as Timber Mesa Trailhead offers dispersed camping opportunities for those seeking more primitive experiences.

Camping in the Show Low area remains accessible year-round, though seasonal considerations affect the experience significantly. Fool Hollow Lake and several other campgrounds operate throughout all seasons, while some private RV parks like Venture In RV Resort operate seasonally from May through October. Many developed campgrounds require reservations, especially during summer months when temperatures are mild compared to lower desert elevations. The region's pine forests provide ample shade at many sites, though elevation (approximately 6,300 feet) means nights can be cool even in summer. According to one visitor, "Don't be fooled when you drive to this park though, you enter through a neighborhood."

Waterfront camping receives consistently positive reviews, with campers highlighting the combination of pine forests and lake access as particularly appealing. Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area draws strong ratings for its clean facilities, spacious sites, and lake views. Several campgrounds offer full hookups for RVs while maintaining natural surroundings. The proximity to Show Low's amenities (typically within 2-5 miles) makes these campgrounds convenient for restocking supplies. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, campers appreciate that despite being near town, many sites feel appropriately isolated: "Despite being in the middle of a developed area, once in the park, you feel appropriately isolated." Visitors note that reservations should be made well in advance (up to six months) for premium waterfront sites during peak season.

    OK RV Park

Nothing fancy but friendly staff, clean, seems safe

As others have, we stayed just one night on way east. We called and they kept spot open for us. Staff very friendly. Very long sites, we did not need nor use hookups for such a short stay. Bathrooms clean, the entire site has gravel, including dog-walk area (smaller sized, soft lava rock gravel), there were ice cream bars for sale in office. It was quiet and although rigs/sites were close, the sites are so long that the staff stagger them such that we weren't too close to others around us. Would stay here again. Did have decent cell service.

    Crystal Forest Museum and Gifts

Decent little place, didn’t end up staying.

Cute gift shops, lots to buy if your into that kind of thing. We couldn’t access the forest because of the government shut down. The rv park looked flat and decently maintained. We ended up boonedocking down the road a ways.

    Concho Lake Recreation Area

    Not a bad spot

Open campsites with shade available, concrete slabs for RVs available. No bathrooms (October) or water available here but there is a water machine and showers at a laundromat .5mile away. Dirt roads with a bit of rutting and rocks but easy enough to handle, rain does get it pretty muddy and slick.

    Crystal Forest Museum and Gifts

    Very convenient

Right next to the Petrified Forest NP entrance. Easy access, flat and free! We think that the spot with tables has a fee so we moved to the part next to the teepee. Lots of spots, gravel area with concrete pads. We did not see a trash bin/container however. Perfect for one night.

    larson ridge dispersed camping

    Free Dispersed camping

Lovely area with multiple large campsites along the road. No amenities. Was able to pull our 27ft trailer in. There’s a little general store just a few minutes up the highway and a town about 20 minutes away if needed.

    Diamond Creek Number Two Campground

    Drove to campground

We followed directions via Dyrt map down Indian Rt 61. There were no signs. The road became primitive and once we reached the destination via map, still no signs. We turned around and headed back toward the highway. Cannot review this campground, don’t know if it exists -but at least provide some info.

    Los Burros Campground

    Pretty Quiet, best in Fall

We love this campground.  Small, usually not full - we have been here summer and Fall, and only one night have we seen it full.  Easy roads but pretty basic, fire pits, table and clean vault toilet.  The elk come in in the fall and are delightfully noisy so if you have trouble sleeping this won't be your gig. Excellent trail system for hikes and mountain bikes and a trailhead right at the campground.

There is a camp host but site is free.  Dispersed camping nearby if you want more solitude.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Popular campgrounds fill quickly during peak seasons. For Fool Hollow Lake, one camper advises, "This is one of our most favorite campgrounds of all. Highly advise making a reservation at least 6 months ahead of time."

Weather considerations: The mountain elevation creates variable conditions. A camper at Ponderosa RV Resort shared, "We spent 5-nights here (July 1-6, 2022). Ponderosa is a reasonably quiet RV park in the pines of Pinetop."

Site selection: Some campgrounds have specific restrictions on accommodation types. At Show Low Lake Campground, a camper noted, "The spots were clean, some with shade and some out in the open. We stayed across the road in the second camping loop and they only allow RV's in this side, no tents."

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Recreation opportunities abound for children. According to a camper at Show Low Lake Campground, "We love to spend time on the biking/hiking trail around the lake. You can fish too. Plenty of bird and wildlife watching."

Safety considerations: Wildlife sightings require proper precautions. A camper at Timber Mesa Trailhead warned, "The next morning we found we were only a few steps away from a mountain lion kill site! WOW! So many kinds of animals. Elk. Coyote. Cow. Sheep."

One camper noted about Show Low Lake Campground, "On the downside there was only 1 flush toilet bathroom for one side of the campground. There were more flush toilets and showers by the registration office, but they were locked in the evening/night."

Tips from RVers

Campsite navigation: Venture In RV Resort requires careful maneuvering for larger rigs. A reviewer explained, "The sites are pretty level, really wide, and fairly deep. There is a concrete patio with each site. Sites are covered in cinders which are a bit of a pain. They present a somewhat soft surface which is like walking in about 6 inches of soft sand."

Speed bump awareness: Hon-Dah RV Park requires caution when driving through. A camper warned, "The speed humps in this place are MONSTERS! We had to crab over them so that we didn't leave our plumbing with them."

Site selection strategies: Electric hookups are limited at some locations. At Show Low Lake Campground, a visitor noted, "30 amp service in some spots, no water or sewage but there is a dump station and water fill station on premises. Open all year and is plowed when it snows."

Connectivity limitations: Cell service varies throughout the area. At Venture In RV Resort, a camper reported, "Cell service is pretty bad here. We have Verizon cell phones which usually worked for phone service but sometimes cut out. We have Verizon and AT&T hotspots.
